The Sphinx’s first encounter in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is at the Mountain Shrine in Vermund, high above the Misty Marshes. The most clearly marked approach starts at Checkpoint Rest Town, crosses the Ancient Battleground, passes through Worldsend Cavern and the Shrine Corridor, and ends at a long stairway to the shrine. Speaking with the Sphinx there begins A Game of Wits.
This guide covers that first location, the landmarks that keep the route on course, the hazards reported along the way, and the less-detailed approach from the Misty Marshes. It does not cover the Sphinx’s later location at the Frontier Shrine except to explain when she moves.
Where is the Sphinx in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
The Sphinx is first found at the Mountain Shrine in Vermund. The shrine sits above the Misty Marshes and is reached by climbing through a mountain route rather than by walking directly across the marshes.

For most players, Checkpoint Rest Town is the easiest starting reference. From there, travel north toward the Ancient Battleground. The route then uses the ruined keep in that area as a landmark, enters Worldsend Cavern, continues through the Ancient Ruins and Shrine Corridor, and finishes at the shrine stairs. At the top, the Sphinx is waiting for the opening interaction that starts A Game of Wits.

Guides also describe starting in Vernworth, traveling toward Battahl, and taking the fork that leads to the battleground. That is a useful alternative starting direction if you are already in the capital, but the landmark sequence beyond the battleground is the same.
Which route should you take?
| Approach | Useful landmarks | What is established | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ancient Battleground route | Checkpoint Rest Town, Ancient Battleground, ruined keep, Worldsend Cavern, Ancient Ruins, Shrine Corridor, shrine stairs | Several route guides describe this path in sequence. | The clearest option when you want landmarks you can verify as you go. |
| Misty Marshes hillside route | Northwest hills above the Misty Marshes | Guides report a climb from the marshes, but the available description does not provide turn-by-turn landmarks. | A possible shortcut or alternate approach when you are already near the marshes and can navigate by terrain. |
No reliable source establishes a comparable distance, travel time, or measured difficulty for either route. Treat the battleground path as the documented, landmark-rich option rather than assuming it is always shorter or safer.
Main route from Checkpoint Rest Town
1. Set Checkpoint Rest Town as your reference point
Begin at Checkpoint Rest Town and orient yourself toward the north. The important objective is not a particular road sign or a stated number of turns; it is reaching the Ancient Battleground. If you are coming from Vernworth instead, head in the direction of Battahl and take the fork that guides you toward the battleground.
Keep the battleground as your first navigation checkpoint. If the terrain starts to look like ordinary open countryside with no sign of the large ruins, you have probably left the intended line. Turn back toward the northbound approach rather than trying to guess a direct line to the mountain shrine.
2. Use the Ancient Battleground’s ruins to confirm your position
The Ancient Battleground is the route’s largest visual confirmation. Look for the ruined keep or castle walls. These structures are more useful than trying to follow an invisible straight line because they identify the area where the cavern entrance is found.

Walk through the stronghold ruins and inspect the sections beyond and behind the walls. Worldsend Cavern lies in relation to these ruins; the route guides direct players through the ruined area to its entrance. If you reach the battleground but cannot see a cave immediately, search around the keep rather than leaving the entire area.
3. Find the entrance to Worldsend Cavern
Worldsend Cavern is the transition from the open battleground to the enclosed mountain route. Once you locate its entrance, commit to the cavern path instead of attempting to climb every visible slope outside the ruins.
The cavern is also the first major hazard warning on this journey. One route guide specifically calls out a powerful golem inside Worldsend Cavern, while another describes tricky enemies along the broader approach. Enter prepared to stop, recover, or retreat if a fight is going badly; the guides do not establish a universal character level or equipment threshold that guarantees a safe passage.
4. Continue through the cavern and into the Ancient Ruins
Follow the route through Worldsend Cavern until it leads into the Ancient Ruins. The names matter because they help you identify whether you are still progressing toward the shrine: after the battleground and cavern, the next enclosed landmark is the ruins, not the Mountain Shrine itself.
Do not expect the Sphinx to appear as soon as you leave the cavern. The route still passes through another connecting section before the final ascent. If you see ancient stonework and the path continues inward, you are still on the intended approach.

5. Follow the Shrine Corridor
From the Ancient Ruins, continue into the Shrine Corridor. This corridor is the final named passage in the route descriptions. Follow its path rather than doubling back to the battleground or searching for an outdoor road around the mountain.
The corridor’s purpose is primarily directional: it funnels the route toward the shrine stairs. If you are in the corridor and the passage continues upward or toward a large stairway, keep moving in that direction. There is no published distance marker or official map measurement to use for this section.
6. Climb the stairs to the Mountain Shrine
The route ends with stairs leading to the Mountain Shrine. Climb them to reach the Sphinx’s first encounter area. Once you arrive at the shrine, interact with her to begin A Game of Wits.
How to recognize the important landmarks
- Checkpoint Rest Town: the practical starting reference for the standard route.
- Ancient Battleground: the open ruin field that confirms you have reached the correct area north of the starting point.
- Ruined keep or castle walls: the structures that help you locate the cavern entrance.
- Worldsend Cavern: the enclosed passage beyond the battleground; a guide reports a powerful golem here.
- Ancient Ruins: the section after the cavern and before the final corridor.
- Shrine Corridor: the connecting passage that leads to the upward stairway.
- Mountain Shrine: the destination where the Sphinx waits for the first meeting.
Using these landmarks in order is more dependable than trying to estimate your position from the shrine’s apparent elevation. The route rises through several named areas, and the mountain can make visual lines misleading.
Hazards and practical preparation
Expect dangerous encounters
Windows Central describes tricky enemies along the way, and Push Square warns specifically about a powerful golem in Worldsend Cavern. These are guide-reported hazards, not an official list of every enemy or a guaranteed encounter pattern. Enemy groups can still make the route slower than the terrain alone suggests.

Approach the cavern ready to pause between fights. If a battle consumes too many healing resources or leaves your party in poor condition, withdrawing to safer ground is more sensible than pressing into the corridor and shrine ascent. The available guides do not publish a minimum level, recommended vocation combination, or fixed gear score, so there is no evidence-based number at which the route becomes universally easy.
Use the environment to avoid navigation mistakes
When you are uncertain, return to the last landmark you can identify. From the open battleground, look for the ruined keep. From the keep, search for Worldsend Cavern. Inside the cavern, continue toward the Ancient Ruins, then the Shrine Corridor and stairs. This sequence gives you a recovery plan if combat or a branching passage breaks your sense of direction.
Do not treat the alternative climb as a measured shortcut
The northwest hillside approach from the Misty Marshes is reported as an alternative, but the available description does not provide enough turns, rock formations, or other fixed references to reproduce it reliably. It may save you from crossing the Ancient Battleground if you are already in the marsh area, but its distance and difficulty have not been established against the main route.

If you are already above or near the Misty Marshes, guides describe climbing the hills to the northwest toward the Mountain Shrine. This route avoids the documented passage through the Ancient Battleground, but it is not mapped in the same detail.

- Use the Misty Marshes as your starting terrain reference.
- Move toward the northwest hills rather than trying to follow the battleground road.
- Gain elevation and look for the mountain approach to the shrine.
- Once you locate the shrine stairs or the shrine platform, continue upward to the Sphinx.
Because the published description does not identify a complete sequence of caves, walls, or corridors for this climb, do not assume that every northwest slope leads directly to the shrine. If the terrain stops producing a clear ascent, return to the marshes and use the Checkpoint Rest Town route instead.

What happens when you reach the Sphinx?
The Mountain Shrine is the location for the first Sphinx encounter. Interacting with her begins the riddle quest A Game of Wits. Reaching the shrine is therefore not merely a sightseeing detour: it is the trigger for the opening stage of the Sphinx’s challenge.
After the initial riddles, the Sphinx moves to the Frontier Shrine. If you return to the Mountain Shrine later and she is no longer there, that does not necessarily mean you took the wrong path. The move is part of the quest’s progression. Search for the later encounter at the Frontier Shrine rather than repeating the entire mountain route.
Troubleshooting the journey
“I am at the Ancient Battleground but cannot find the cave.”
Use the ruined keep or castle walls as your search center. The cavern is described as lying behind or beyond the stronghold ruins, so inspect the areas around and past the walls instead of searching the middle of the open field. If you entered the battleground from an unusual direction, circle the keep until the ruin structure is clearly behind you and the surrounding terrain begins to narrow toward an entrance.
“I entered a cave but the route does not seem to progress.”
Confirm that the cave is Worldsend Cavern, the passage associated with the Ancient Battleground route. The intended sequence after that entrance is Ancient Ruins, then Shrine Corridor, then the stairs. If you emerge somewhere that does not lead toward those named sections, return to the last unmistakable ruin and retrace the path.
“I am in the Shrine Corridor but cannot see the Sphinx.”
The Sphinx is not positioned at the corridor entrance. Continue until the corridor leads to the stairway and climb to the Mountain Shrine. The first encounter is at the top shrine area, not in the earlier ruins.
“The Sphinx is missing from the Mountain Shrine.”
If you have already completed the initial riddles, check the Frontier Shrine. The Sphinx relocates there after that first stage, so repeating the Mountain Shrine approach will not restore the original encounter.
“The golem blocks my progress.”
The guides identify a powerful golem in Worldsend Cavern but do not provide a required level or a guaranteed tactic. Treat the fight as a risk decision: recover before engaging, use the cavern’s space to avoid being trapped, and retreat if your party cannot sustain the battle. If you cannot safely pass, the less-detailed Misty Marshes hillside route is the only alternate approach reported for reaching the shrine.
