For a predictable starting point in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen on Switch 2, try the locked 30fps option with Frame Generation off. If smoother-looking motion matters more, compare variable frame rate with Frame Generation both on and off in a busy town and during combat. Reviewers disagree about which feels better, and the best choice can depend on your display, play style and current game build.
Capcom scheduled this Switch 2 edition for October 9, 2026, combining the main game and expansion in one package (Capcom’s announcement). The settings below reflect launch-week reviewer observations; check the options available in your current build, since later updates may change them.
What settings should you change for better performance on Switch 2?
Use a short A/B comparison rather than assuming one combination is best. Launch-week reports identify three relevant controls: a locked 30fps option, variable frame rate, and an optional FSR 3 Frame Generation toggle. The reports do not establish a universally superior setting.
- Set a predictable baseline: choose locked 30fps and turn Frame Generation off. This is a practical point of comparison, not a guarantee of the best experience for every player. GameWatcher says the 30fps cap does not bring a resolution or visual-quality increase (GameWatcher’s launch-week impressions), while RPG Site’s reviewer preferred Frame Generation off (RPG Site’s October 7 impressions).
- Compare smoother-looking motion: try variable frame rate with Frame Generation on, then turn Frame Generation off while keeping the other setting unchanged. This makes it easier to tell whether generated motion helps you or whether you prefer the response and image without it.
- Repeat in demanding scenes: test in a busy town and during combat, not only in a quiet opening area. Reviewers describe occasional choppiness and differences between handheld and docked play.
Nintendo Life preferred variable frame rate overall and observed smoother motion with Frame Generation even at the 30fps lock (Nintendo Life’s October 9 review). GameWatcher recommends trying variable frame rate with Frame Generation, particularly with a VRR-compatible display. These are reviewer impressions, not a guarantee of how every scene, display or game build will behave.

What do the frame-rate and Frame Generation options change?
Locked 30fps
The locked option provides a clear, consistent target for comparison. It does not, according to GameWatcher, automatically improve resolution or visual quality. Players who prefer predictable motion may find it a useful baseline, though it can look less fluid than Frame Generation output.
Variable frame rate
Variable frame rate lets performance rise above the 30fps target when a scene allows it. The tradeoff is that motion and pacing may feel less consistent; Nintendo Life reported occasional choppiness. Whether that bothers you is best judged in scenes that put more demand on the game.

FSR 3 Frame Generation
Frame Generation creates interpolated frames between rendered frames to make motion appear smoother. It is not the same as raising the game’s underlying rendered-frame cadence through a native frame-rate increase. GameWatcher notes that interpolation can produce visual oddities, while RPG Site reports perceived input lag and occasional issues around hair or heads. GameWatcher also observed hair oddities during fast camera movement. These are reviewer observations, not effects every player will necessarily see.

If controls feel less direct or artifacts distract you, switch Frame Generation off and compare under the same conditions. If smoother-looking movement is your priority and the image and response feel acceptable, try it on. Reviews differ: Nintendo Life found smoother motion, while RPG Site’s reviewer preferred it off after trying the default combination.

How should you compare handheld and docked play?
Switch 2 supports handheld, tabletop and TV modes, according to the Nintendo UK product listing. Reviewers reported that performance impressions can differ between handheld and docked play, with more choppiness docked in some play. Test your chosen settings in the mode you actually use; do not assume a result in one mode carries over to the other.
When moving between handheld and TV play, revisit brightness calibration. GameWatcher reports that brightness values are shared across modes and between HDR and non-HDR use, so a setting that looks right on one screen may not look right on another. Nintendo’s UK listing specifies HDR support on compatible TVs. Its listed download size is 49.6 GB; that is a UK-region product-page figure, not a universal size for every region or update state (Nintendo UK product listing).

Is Switch 2 Dragon’s Dogma 2 a native 60fps game?
Do not treat Frame Generation as proof of a native 60fps mode. Before release, producer Naoto Oyama told TechRadar that performance was at least 30 frames per second on the hardware and higher in many scenes; that was a pre-release statement, not an independent test of the retail build (TechRadar’s report). Launch-week coverage describes optional Frame Generation separately from the game’s underlying rendered-frame cadence.

The product is Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen for Nintendo Switch 2. Capcom said the edition combines the main game and expansion content in one package (Capcom announcement). Capcom’s series sales figure was over 14 million cumulative units as of March 31, 2026, but that total is for the Dragon’s Dogma series, not this game alone (Capcom sales data).
