Start with the vocation whose risks and role suit you, then use pawn commands to shape each fight rather than expecting your party to act the same way in every situation. You can change vocation at a vocation guild, so your first choice is a starting point—not a permanent commitment. Capcom says Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, which includes expansion content, is scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 9, 2026. Capcom’s announcement and Nintendo UK’s listing identify the Switch 2 release.
What is the Switch 2 release?
The announced Switch 2 package is titled Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. Capcom describes it as a release that includes an expansion for Dragon’s Dogma 2 and brings new tales and encounters to the experience. Capcom announced Switch 2 alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with an October 9, 2026 release date. Nintendo’s UK listing also identifies it as a Nintendo Switch 2 game with the same date.
Those sources establish the announced title and platform, not the format, inventory, or regional retail details. Check the listing for your region if you are confirming what is available to buy.
How should a beginner choose a vocation?
Choose based on the job you want in a fight and the kind of risk you are comfortable managing. The four initial choices are Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief; they are not the entire vocation roster. Warrior and Sorcerer are among the other vocations, and special vocations become available to the Arisen as progress is made. The official manual describes the initial roles as follows:

Can you change vocation later?
Yes. You can change vocation at a vocation guild, so try a role and switch if its combat rhythm does not suit you. The manual does not make the first selection a permanent commitment.
How can you make combat easier to read?
Think of each vocation’s strength together with its exposure. A Fighter can meet threats up close and use a timed block, while a Mage needs room to finish incantations. An Archer can stay at range and benefit from weak-point shots; a Thief has to judge when to slip away as well as when to strike. These differences give you a practical starting plan: pick a role, then play around the action it rewards instead of treating every vocation as a damage-first option.

- Fighter: use the shield and timed blocks when you want to hold a frontline position.
- Mage: look for a safer moment and position before committing to an incantation.
- Archer: use Steady Shot when precision matters; the easier Loose attack has limited range and minimal harm.
- Thief: use Swift Step to evade and avoid staying exposed to heavy attacks.
The manual supports these role and control distinctions, but it does not establish a universally best beginner vocation. Choose by the actions you want to practice and the amount of exposure you are willing to manage.

Pawn commands change what your companions prioritize, and their usefulness depends on the moment. Try a command, observe how pawns respond in that fight or while exploring, and adjust rather than assuming one instruction always has the same tactical result.

The manual says long-press pawn commands can be enabled or disabled in Game Settings. If holding Go! does not produce Explore!, check that setting.

Inclinations hint at behavior
A pawn’s inclination describes tendencies, not a guaranteed outcome. Use it as a clue about how that pawn may approach the party’s needs:

- Calm: tends to emphasize survival, defense, and evasion.
- Simple: tends to explore and gather.
- Straightforward: is more likely to rush into combat.
Badges signal accumulated knowledge
Monster badges relate to defeating a type of monster, while field badges reflect camping in a region. The manual says experienced pawns can offer beneficial advice. Treat a badge as a useful selection cue, not proof that a pawn is the best choice for every party or situation.
What should you keep in mind about Switch 2 controls?
The vocation and pawn guidance here comes from Capcom’s official web manual, whose pages use the PS5 path. The manual describes game systems, but the Switch 2 control mapping and performance have not been independently established here. Check the Switch 2 game’s own control instructions rather than assuming button mappings are identical.
