Short answer: the Nintendo Switch 2 edition targets 30 frames per second in both handheld and TV modes. Its optional frame-generation setting creates a smoother, 60-fps-equivalent presentation by inserting interpolated frames; it does not make the game render natively at 60 fps. The producer has acknowledged that interpolation can produce slight ghosting in difficult scenes.
A launch-week comparison reported lower image quality and longer loading on Switch 2 than on PS5, but also described the new Nintendo version as smoother than the game’s original launch build. The same report estimated upscaled 1080p in handheld mode, 1440p when docked and roughly 40 fps with frame generation disabled. Those figures are third-party estimates, not Capcom specifications, and there is no like-for-like current PS5 benchmark in the available evidence.
At a glance: what actually changes
| Area | Nintendo Switch 2 | PlayStation 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Edition and release | Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, released October 9, 2026. The package includes the main game and expansion. | Dark Arisen is also available on PS5. The original game launched on PS5 on March 22, 2024. |
| Base frame-rate target | 30 fps in handheld and TV modes, according to producer Naoto Oyama. | Capcom says a September 2026 update improved console frame rate, but the cited announcement gives no current scene-matched number. |
| Optional smoothing | Frame generation can create a 60-fps-equivalent presentation. It is interpolated output, not native 60-fps rendering, and can show slight ghosting. | No equivalent Switch 2 frame-generation claim is established for the PS5 version in the cited material. |
| Resolution estimate | A launch-week side-by-side report estimated upscaled 1080p handheld and 1440p docked. | Current resolution was not established by the available sources. |
| Image quality and loading | The comparison report observed visual downgrades and longer loading than PS5. | The same report judged PS5 superior in those qualitative areas. |
| Portability | Playable handheld or on a TV, with the same stated 30-fps target in both modes. | Home-console play; no handheld mode. |
The table separates confirmed statements from estimates. In particular, “60 fps” on Switch 2 should always be read as 60-fps-equivalent with frame generation unless a test has measured 60 rendered frames every second.

Which editions are being compared?
This is a comparison of the released Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen editions, not a hypothetical Nintendo port. Capcom released the edition on October 9, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. On Switch 2, the main game and expansion are sold together in one package. Capcom describes this as the first Nintendo-platform release for the title.

The PS5 version has a longer software history. The original game arrived on March 22, 2024, and performance reports from that launch period describe an earlier build. Capcom subsequently issued updates, including a September 2026 update intended to improve frame rate. Title Update 4.0, released October 9, 2026, added Hard Mode and official Enhanced PSSR support for PS5 Pro. It also added frame-generation features on PC.
That timeline matters when reading older reviews. A launch-day PS5 video or benchmark may describe behavior that no longer matches the current build, while a post-launch Switch 2 report may be evaluating a different patch level. The evidence available here does not provide a controlled, same-scene measurement for the updated PS5 version.
Frame rate: native rendering versus generated frames
Switch 2’s base target is 30 fps
Producer Naoto Oyama told Famitsu that the Switch 2 version targets 30 fps in both handheld and TV modes. That is the underlying rendering target before any frame-generation option is enabled. It means the game logic and the conventionally rendered frames are designed around a 30-fps cadence rather than a native 60-fps mode.

The supplied technical statements do not establish a minimum frame rate, a frame-time graph or a locked 30-fps result.
What the frame-generation switch does
Switch 2 includes an optional frame-generation setting. Oyama explained that the function interpolates frames between conventionally rendered frames, producing visuals that appear equivalent to 60 fps. The retail option can be switched on or off.

“In the Switch 2 version of Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, the base frame rate is targeted at 30 FPS in both handheld and TV modes. If you turn on frame generation in this state, a function that interpolates frames will be activated, allowing you to play with smooth visuals equivalent to 60 FPS.”
Naoto Oyama, quoted from a Famitsu interview in Nintendo Life’s English-language report

Interpolation changes the motion presentation, not the amount of game simulation or the number of fully rendered frames produced by the engine. It can make camera movement and character motion look smoother, but it cannot be described accurately as native 60-fps rendering.
The ghosting trade-off
Oyama also cautioned that interpolation is difficult in some situations and that slight ghosting has been observed. Fast weapon swings, overlapping characters, particles, foliage and objects moving across high-contrast backgrounds are the kinds of circumstances in which generated imagery can be easier to notice. The interview does not quantify how often ghosting occurs or identify a particular scene that always triggers it.
If image clarity is more important to you than apparent smoothness, turn frame generation off and judge the native presentation. If camera motion feels too juddery at the base target, turn it on and accept that occasional artifacts are part of the technique. The setting is therefore a preference choice, not a free upgrade to the rendering rate.

Resolution and image quality
What was estimated for Switch 2
Nintendo Life’s launch-week report relayed a third-party side-by-side comparison that estimated an upscaled 1080p output in handheld mode and 1440p when docked. These are comparison estimates, not official Capcom specifications. “Upscaled” also means the internal rendering resolution can be lower than the output signal sent to the display.
Recommended Free Tools
The docked estimate gives a sharper signal on a television than the handheld estimate, but it does not make the Switch 2 image equivalent to a native 1440p render. Likewise, the 1080p handheld figure describes the output estimate in that comparison; it is not a guarantee for every scene, effect or patch.
Reported visual compromises against PS5
The same comparison reported visual downgrades on Switch 2 relative to PS5. It did not publish a controlled pixel-count analysis, a complete list of reduced settings or a percentage difference. The observation should therefore be read qualitatively: PS5 was reported to preserve higher visual quality, while Switch 2 makes compromises to run the game on portable hardware.
Likely visible differences in a cross-platform comparison can include foliage density, shadow quality, texture detail, effects resolution and draw distance, but the cited report does not assign each of those settings a measured value. Do not treat an individual screenshot or video as proof that every one of these options is reduced in the retail build.
Why the missing PS5 number matters
The available evidence does not establish a current, scene-matched PS5 resolution. It is therefore not responsible to claim a precise resolution ratio, a percentage reduction or a definitive pixel-count advantage for PS5. The safe conclusion is narrower: the reported comparison found PS5 visually better, while the exact current PS5 output remains undocumented in the supplied sources.

Performance beyond the frame-rate label
Third-party estimate of unlocked Switch 2 performance
The launch-week comparison estimated roughly 40 fps on Switch 2 with frame generation disabled. Because the report calls this an estimate, it should not be presented as a Capcom-confirmed operating point or as a locked result. A game that averages around a value in selected tests can still dip below it in heavy scenes or fluctuate with camera direction.
The estimate is useful mainly for understanding the relationship between the two modes: the underlying game may run above its stated 30-fps target in some circumstances, while frame generation creates a smoother-looking output on top of that variable base. It does not turn the mode into a guaranteed 40-fps or 60-fps lock.
Loading times
Nintendo Life reported longer loading on Switch 2 than on PS5. The report did not provide timed measurements, storage conditions, patch versions for a controlled test, or a list of every loading transition. Treat the finding as a qualitative comparison rather than a promise that one platform is a specific number of seconds slower.
Longer loads can be more noticeable when entering towns, restarting after a defeat or moving between large areas. They do not change the game’s resolution or frame-rate target, but they are part of the everyday trade-off for choosing the portable edition.
Smoother than the original launch state
The same report described the Switch 2 version as smoother than the original launch state of the game. That statement compares against an earlier build, not necessarily against the updated PS5 release available after September and October 2026 patches. It explains why a Switch 2 owner may have a better experience than launch-era videos suggest, while still seeing lower visual quality than PS5.

Handheld and TV play
Switch 2’s defining advantage is that the same edition can be played handheld or connected to a television. Oyama’s 30-fps target applies to both modes, so docking does not unlock a separate native 60-fps setting. The launch-week estimate of upscaled 1080p handheld and 1440p docked indicates that output resolution changes with the display mode, but the report does not establish a different internal quality preset for each mode.
Handheld play can make some compromises less conspicuous because the screen is smaller and viewed more closely. On a large television, lower-detail foliage, softer edges and longer loads may be easier to notice. Your distance from the screen, display size and tolerance for interpolation artifacts can matter as much as the nominal output number.
How the updated PS5 version changes the comparison
Capcom’s September 2026 announcement says a system update improved frame rate and added save slots and more assignable weapon skills. The October 9 Title Update 4.0 added Hard Mode and official Enhanced PSSR support for PS5 Pro. PSSR is relevant to image reconstruction on that specific console, but the cited announcement does not provide a current resolution or frame-rate measurement for either base PS5 or PS5 Pro.

Consequently, comparisons that use 2024 PS5 launch footage should be labeled as launch-era evidence. They can show how the game originally behaved, but they cannot establish the performance of the current 2026 build. Conversely, the existence of a frame-rate improvement does not prove a particular locked frame rate without a test that measures it.
Which version fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play in bed, while travelling or away from the TV | Switch 2 | It is the only edition in this comparison with handheld play. |
| Highest reported image quality and shorter loading | PS5 | The launch-week comparison reported visual and loading advantages for PS5. |
| Smoother-looking camera motion without requiring native 60 fps | Switch 2 with frame generation enabled | The option produces a 60-fps-equivalent presentation from a 30-fps target, with possible ghosting. |
| Minimal image-processing artifacts | Switch 2 with frame generation disabled, or PS5 | Disabling interpolation removes its specific ghosting trade-off; PS5 was reported to have higher visual quality overall. |
| Access to the current PS5 Pro reconstruction feature | PS5 Pro | Title Update 4.0 adds official Enhanced PSSR support for that hardware. |
Choose Switch 2 if portability and one combined main-game-plus-expansion package outweigh lower visual quality and longer loads. Choose PS5 if you play primarily on a television and want the strongest reported image quality. Neither choice should be advertised as a guaranteed native 60-fps experience on the basis of the available evidence.
How to evaluate reviews and videos
- Check the edition and patch date. Confirm that footage is from Dark Arisen and note whether it predates the September or October 2026 updates.
- Separate rendered frames from generated output. A video labelled “60 fps” may be showing Switch 2 frame generation. Look for an explicit statement about the base rendering rate.
- Identify the measurement method. “Around 40 fps” or “1440p docked” should be treated as an estimate unless the tester publishes a controlled methodology and scene selection.
- Compare the same scene. Different weather, crowd density, camera angles and travel locations can change both image quality and frame pacing.
- Look for artifacts as well as averages. A smooth counter does not reveal ghosting, uneven frame delivery or loading behavior.
What the sales figure does—and does not—mean
Capcom reported more than 14 million units sold for the Dragon’s Dogma series cumulatively as of March 31, 2026. That is a franchise-wide figure. It is not the sales total for Dragon’s Dogma 2, the 2026 Dark Arisen edition or either console version, so it should not be used to infer which platform is more popular.
Bottom-line verdict
Switch 2 delivers the complete Dark Arisen package in a portable format and offers optional frame generation for smoother-looking motion. Its technical compromise is clear: the underlying target is 30 fps, interpolation can leave slight ghosting, and a launch-week comparison reported lower visual quality and longer loading than PS5. PS5 remains the safer choice for television-first players who prioritize image quality, but exact current PS5 resolution and frame-rate numbers are not established here, especially after the 2026 updates. Compare footage by patch date and rendering method rather than treating “60 fps” as a synonym for native 60-fps performance.
