Lost Rites is a dungeon-focused route in the reported Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion. Start it by speaking with Captain Brant about the uncovered ruins in Vermund, then travel through Darkhorde Cave in the western Malachite Forest to reach Devilkin Hollow. Clearing that first dungeon is reported to award the Proving Grounds Compass, which points to additional Lost Rite locations.
This is not a quest from the earlier game Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. The original title and its Bitterblack Isle content are separate from the expansion route discussed here. The first location and compass reward are guide-level reports; a complete, independently corroborated sequence for every later dungeon is not currently established.
What the Lost Rites quest is
Lost Rites is described as a chain of challenge dungeons in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. Its purpose is exploration and combat rather than following the expansion’s separate Norgan narrative route. The reported dungeons are spread across Vermund and Battahl. One contemporary secondary guide counts twelve Lost Rites, but that number is a guide’s tally, not an official statistic published by Capcom.
The name creates an easy trap for returning players. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the earlier game, and its Bitterblack Isle quests do not answer questions about this Lost Rites route. If a guide sends you to Bitterblack Isle, it is discussing the wrong game for this FAQ.

What you need before starting
The correct game and expansion
You need the relevant base game, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and access to the reported Dark Arisen expansion content. The available coverage does not establish a physical-edition SKU or a verified retail listing for the expansion. Treat it as digital expansion content unless your platform’s current store explicitly identifies another format.
Suggested starting level

Practical preparation
Before speaking with Brant, make a manual save and leave enough inventory space for a dungeon reward. A normal combat-ready party and healing supplies are sensible precautions, but no quest-specific consumable, accessory, repair tool, or replacement item has been identified for Lost Rites. Do not assume that an item sold under a similar name is required unless the game itself gives you that objective.
How to start Lost Rites
- Find Captain Brant in Vermund. Choose the conversation about the uncovered ruins. A current walkthrough identifies this dialogue as the Lost Rites starting point.
- Do not choose the “new Arisen” option if you want the dungeons. PC Gamer’s coverage distinguishes that option from the uncovered-ruins conversation; the former begins the separate Norgan story route.
- Leave for the western Malachite Forest. The first dungeon is reached through Darkhorde Cave. The route is not described as a direct entrance from a major city, so follow the cave approach rather than searching the forest for a separate Devilkin Hollow door.
- Enter Devilkin Hollow. This is the first Lost Rites dungeon identified by the walkthrough.
- Clear the dungeon’s combat encounter. The reported completion reward is the Proving Grounds Compass.
- Use the compass to continue exploring. The same walkthrough says the compass reveals additional Lost Rite locations. The precise order, entrance conditions, and rewards for those later dungeons are not sufficiently corroborated to present as a fixed walkthrough.
Where the first dungeon is
Darkhorde Cave in western Malachite Forest
The practical location answer is Devilkin Hollow via Darkhorde Cave in the western Malachite Forest. Darkhorde Cave is the approach named in the walkthrough; Devilkin Hollow is the dungeon destination. If you are already in the forest, look for the cave route rather than expecting an overworld quest marker to identify every step.

The sources do not provide a coordinate, map-grid reference, or a complete list of landmarks on the walk from Brant to the cave. Consequently, a map pin copied from an unrelated guide may be unreliable, especially if it belongs to the original Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.
What happens inside Devilkin Hollow
The supported description is limited to a combat encounter that must be cleared to obtain the Proving Grounds Compass. No authoritative room-by-room map, enemy roster, puzzle sequence, chest list, or boss name is established by the available coverage. Prepare for ordinary dungeon combat, but do not treat an unverified enemy list or chest route as a required objective.

The Proving Grounds Compass and the next locations
The compass is the key progression item reported for the first dungeon. Its stated function is to reveal further Lost Rite locations, turning the initial clear into a discovery step rather than ending the route at Devilkin Hollow.

Secondary coverage describes a total of twelve Lost Rites distributed across Vermund and Battahl. Because the count comes from a 2026 Dragon’s Dogma 2 Wiki entry rather than an official expansion checklist, use it as a planning estimate. It should not be used to infer a mandatory order, a fixed reward table, or a guaranteed number of dungeons visible at once.

Both routes are associated with the same expansion, but they answer different player goals. The uncovered-ruins conversation starts the dungeon route; the “new Arisen” conversation starts the Norgan story route.

If your objective is combat challenges, select uncovered ruins. If you want the Norgan narrative, select the other dialogue instead. The two options are not interchangeable labels for the same quest.

Troubleshooting when Lost Rites does not appear
Captain Brant offers the wrong conversation
- Read the dialogue options carefully and select the uncovered-ruins topic, not “new Arisen.”
- Confirm that you are playing the Dragon’s Dogma 2 expansion content, not the earlier Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.
- Check that the expansion is installed and enabled on your platform. The sources identify the route as expansion content but do not specify a universal installation screen or entitlement rule.
You cannot find Devilkin Hollow
- Start from the western Malachite Forest and search for the Darkhorde Cave approach.
- Make sure you have actually completed Brant’s uncovered-ruins conversation; the location is described as the first dungeon of that route, not as a randomly discovered standalone cave.
- Avoid relying on Bitterblack Isle maps or guides. They belong to the earlier game.
The compass does not seem to reveal anything
- Verify that the first dungeon’s combat encounter is fully cleared and that the Proving Grounds Compass was awarded.
- Inspect the item description and map interface. The available walkthrough confirms the compass’s revealing function but does not document the exact interface behavior.
- Do not conclude that a later dungeon is locked behind a particular level, item, or quest unless an in-game objective explicitly says so. Those later requirements are not established by the available coverage.
