Your first vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not a permanent build choice: you can change it at a vocation guild. Choose the starting role whose combat style sounds enjoyable, learn to use your Pawns’ suggestions and quest knowledge, and build a party with tools that suit the way you want to play.
Which vocation should you choose first?
Pick according to how you want to fight, not because you fear locking yourself into the wrong path. The four starting vocations are Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief. Their roles give you a practical starting point:

| Vocation | Combat style | Useful if you want to |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Sword-and-shield melee | Engage enemies up close and protect the frontline |
| Mage | Magic attacks and party support | Heal allies and provide weapon enchantments as well as magic attacks |
| Archer | Ranged attacks | Fight from a distance and target enemy weaknesses |
| Thief | Fast, mobile dagger combat | Use speed and mobility in close combat |
These distinctions are drawn from the PlayStation overview of Dragon’s Dogma 2. None makes one vocation universally best; your preferred distance and style matter more than following a fixed recommendation.
Can you change vocation later?
Yes. The official Capcom Adventuring Basics manual says you can change vocation by visiting a vocation guild. Additional vocations become available as the story progresses, so they are not all starting choices. The PlayStation overview also describes Warrior, Sorcerer, and the Arisen-only vocations Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, and Trickster.
#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
That makes the opening choice a way to start playing the combat style you prefer, rather than a decision you must get perfect before beginning.
How do you tell Pawns what to do?
Pawns are active party members who respond to commands and can support you both in and out of combat. A command can direct the party’s response to the situation, while a Pawn’s own suggestions can point to a useful action. The Capcom Pawn manual says that issuing a command just after a Pawn makes a suggestion can prompt that Pawn to follow through—for example, by guiding you to a location or helping with a task.

Controller mappings vary, so use the command prompts shown for your platform rather than relying on a button instruction that may not match your setup. If you prefer not to use long-press Pawn commands, the manual says they can be enabled or disabled in Game Settings.

Can a Pawn lead you to a quest?
Yes, when the quest and Pawn knowledge support it. Set the quest as a priority in the Quest menu, then look for its marker in the quest list. Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 FAQ for Xbox Series X|S, last updated July 20, 2026, explains that:

- A blue marker indicates that your Main Pawn may be able to lead you on the quest or provide useful information.
- Orange “I” and “II” markers correspond to the first and second support Pawns.
- Some quests have no marker, or show one only under certain conditions. NPC schedules and quest prerequisites can affect what you see.
A missing marker therefore does not prove that no Pawn can help. If the route remains unclear, the FAQ says an in-game Diviner’s Salon or Reverent Shrine may offer a hint for a fee.
How should you put your early party together?
Think in terms of coverage, not a mandatory lineup. Fighters provide melee engagement and protection, Archers add ranged attacks and ways to exploit weaknesses, and Mages bring healing, enchantments, and magic attacks. A Mage is a useful role to consider if you want those support tools, but the game’s official descriptions do not make one exact party arrangement compulsory.
Rank #4
- Relic Expedition Cycle – Throughout their journey in the kingdom of Norgan, the Arisen must unearth and appraise forgotten relics to unlock powerful new weapons and skills.
- New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
- Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
- Now on Nintendo Switch 2 – Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the classic fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Dark Arisen Expansion to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
- Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.
Start with the vocation you enjoy, then use Pawns to add capabilities you would otherwise lack. If you prefer to fight at range, for instance, consider whether your party has someone able to hold enemies’ attention up close. Adjust for your own approach and for the encounter rather than treating a single composition as the answer to every fight.
What should you focus on early?
Use the party and the terrain
Pay attention to enemy strengths and weaknesses, terrain, and your party’s available roles. The PlayStation overview notes that enemies react to player tactics. Look for openings and ways to exploit a weakness instead of assuming every encounter must be a direct stand-up fight.

Make Pawn knowledge part of questing
Prioritize the quest you are pursuing, check for Pawn markers, and listen when a Pawn suggests guidance or assistance. Markers are helpful signals, not a complete list of every possible source of information.
Know when Ferrystones can work
Ferrystones are not usable in every situation. Capcom’s FAQ says combat prevents their use, and use beneath certain roofs can fail without consuming the stone. Check the circumstances before assuming fast travel will be available.
Treat the Explorer’s Camping Kit as optional
The Explorer’s Camping Kit is an in-game item, not real-world camping equipment or a beginner requirement. The PlayStation listing identifies an edition and add-on that include it; Capcom’s FAQ says it is stored in-game and may also be purchasable from in-game shops. You do not need to buy an add-on to follow the party and vocation guidance in this guide.
