Start with the vocation that matches how you want to fight, then treat it as an experiment rather than a permanent choice. Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins with Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief. Each has a clear strength and a corresponding risk: defense at close range, powerful but interruptible spellcasting, ranged precision, or fast attacks that depend on timing. You can change vocation later at a vocation guild, so your first selection does not lock your character into one role.

This guide explains the first decisions, the combat habits that make each vocation work, and how to direct pawns so your party behaves intelligently. Button examples come from Capcom’s official PS5 manual; check Options on your platform because mappings can differ.

How to get started in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Your first practical objective is not to find a universally strongest build. It is to learn how your chosen role creates openings, survives mistakes, and contributes to a party. The four starting vocations cover the main approaches:

  • Fighter: guarded close combat with a sword and shield.
  • Mage: staff-based magick, including healing and enchantments.
  • Archer: bow attacks from range, with an emphasis on aiming at weak points.
  • Thief: rapid dagger strikes and evasive movement.

Capcom describes these as different toolsets rather than a ranking. Pick the one whose decisions sound enjoyable, play through the opening encounters, and change later if another style suits you better. The official Vocations manual confirms that vocation changes are available at a vocation guild.

Choose a first goal, not a permanent identity

Use your first hours to answer one question: do you prefer controlling space, protecting yourself, supporting allies, or taking risks for quick damage? A Fighter tests defensive timing, a Mage tests safe casting windows, an Archer tests aim and distance, and a Thief tests attack-and-evade rhythm. None of those lessons is wasted if you later switch; they teach you how enemies telegraph attacks and how pawns create openings.

Check the controls before a difficult fight

Open Options and review the control layout before relying on a shortcut. Capcom’s PS5 manual lists controls for weapon skills, health and stamina recovery items, inventory access, and lantern use in its Controls section. Those button assignments are PS5 defaults, not a promise that the same symbols appear on PC or another console. If a command feels awkward, remap it before you build muscle memory.

Keep your basic supplies accessible

Combat becomes harder when you stop moving to search menus. Learn the shortcut for recovery items and the one for your lantern, then practice using each outside danger. Carry enough healing to recover from a mistake, but do not treat items as a substitute for positioning: a safe retreat and a well-timed pawn command often prevent more damage than a late heal.

Which vocation should you choose?

The table is a starting framework. “Best” depends on whether you enjoy defense, preparation, precision, or momentum.

Vocation Primary range Defensive or mobility tool Party contribution Main risk to manage
Fighter Close Sword-and-shield defense; a well-timed block can deflect an attack Holds attention in the front line and creates safe space Being surrounded or blocking too late
Mage Staff-based magick Positioning and timing while incanting Curative magick and enchantments Remaining vulnerable during an incantation
Archer Ranged bow attacks Distance and deliberate aim Pressure on exposed or weak points Low-value shots when aim or range is poor
Thief Close Swift Step evasion and quick movement Fast damage and opportunistic attacks Overcommitting before an opening is safe

Fighter: learn the block before chasing damage

Fighter is the clearest choice if you want to stand near an enemy and make incoming attacks part of your decision-making. The sword supplies close-range damage; the shield supplies a way to defend. Capcom notes that a well-timed block can deflect an attack, so the important skill is not holding the guard forever. Watch the enemy’s movement, block as the strike arrives, and use the deflection to regain control.

Stay aware of your surroundings. A shield helps against attacks you can face, but several enemies can pressure you from different directions. Let pawns draw some attention, avoid backing into obstacles, and move toward space where you can see the next attack. When an enemy is committed to a long animation, answer with your weapon skills rather than trading hits blindly.

Mage: powerful support that needs a safe casting window

Mage is the natural starting point if you want to heal allies, apply enchantments, and shape a fight with magick. The trade-off is explicit: a Mage must incant spells before casting, and that incantation leaves the caster vulnerable. A spell is therefore a positioning decision before it is a damage decision.

Begin an incantation when enemies are occupied, staggered, distant, or separated by terrain. If a threat closes in, stop trying to complete a spell and relocate rather than absorbing an attack. Keep a clear route behind you, avoid standing at the edge of a drop or in a corner, and ask a pawn to help when you need time to recover. Curative magick is most valuable when cast before an ally is in immediate danger, not after the party has already collapsed.

Archer: make range and weak points work together

Archer rewards players who like to observe an enemy and choose a target. Capcom distinguishes two useful approaches: Loose shot prioritizes ease of aim but has limited range and harm, while Steady Shot is more precise. The manual also states that striking a weak point can deal substantial damage.

Use Loose shot when an enemy is moving unpredictably or you need a quick hit while repositioning. Use Steady Shot when you have enough time to line up a precise target. Do not stand still simply because a weak point exists; take the shot when your position is safe, then move before a charging enemy reaches you. If a large foe exposes a vulnerable area only briefly, wait for the opening instead of spending stamina or attention on low-value arrows.

Thief: attack in bursts, then evade

Thief is built around quick dagger attacks and the Swift Step evasion tool. It suits players who prefer to circle an enemy, exploit a brief opening, and leave before the counterattack. Timing matters more than holding the attack button: a fast vocation still takes damage if it remains in front of a committed strike.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approach from an angle, land a short sequence, and use Swift Step to escape when the enemy turns toward you. Avoid chasing a target into a crowd. Let a Fighter or another pawn attract attention, then attack the exposed side. If your timing is inconsistent, spend a fight practicing evasion rather than maximizing damage; survival gives you more opportunities to learn.

Can you change your vocation later?

Yes. Visit a vocation guild to change vocation, as described in Capcom’s official vocation instructions. That makes the starting choice a reversible experiment. You can begin as a Fighter to learn blocking, then move to Archer when you want a ranged challenge, or try Mage after you understand how enemies telegraph attacks.

Capcom Dragon's Dogma 2 Standard Anglais Playstation 5 [video game]
  • A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
  • Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.

Change when your preferred decisions have changed, not merely because a fight went badly. A single defeat may indicate poor positioning or an unsuitable pawn setup rather than a wrong vocation. Before switching, play several encounters and note what you actually wanted to do: stay in front, cast from safety, aim at weak points, or evade through attacks. Choose the vocation that offers more of those decisions.

What changes when you switch

A new vocation changes the tools and risks you use in combat. Revisit the controls after changing, test the basic attacks in a safe area, and check which skills are available before entering a major encounter. Your old habits may be actively harmful: a Mage who stands where a Fighter used to block is exposed, while a Thief who expects to evade every hit may miss the protection a shield provides.

Combat fundamentals that help every vocation

Read the enemy before committing

Start each encounter by identifying the most immediate threat, the space you can retreat through, and the pawn most likely to attract attention. Small enemies often create danger by surrounding you; larger enemies create danger through reach and timing. Do not spend your strongest action while you are still learning how the target moves.

Use openings instead of trading damage

An opening is a moment when the enemy is recovering, distracted, exposed, or committed to an attack that cannot reach you. Fighter uses that moment after a block, Mage after a safe incantation window, Archer when a weak point is visible, and Thief after an evasion. If no opening exists, reposition. The damage you decline to take is part of your victory.

Manage health and stamina deliberately

Capcom’s PS5 control reference includes shortcuts for health and stamina recovery items. Learn those shortcuts, but avoid waiting until both resources are nearly empty. Recover during a lull, behind cover, or after pawns have drawn attention. A Mage should also treat the time spent incanting as a resource cost: a spell that cannot be completed safely is not ready merely because you have enough stamina.

Keep the camera and escape route under control

Close-range vocations need room to turn and see incoming attacks. Ranged vocations need a line of sight that does not trap them against scenery. Before attacking, identify where you will go if the enemy closes the distance. This habit reduces panic, makes pawn commands easier to issue, and gives every vocation a consistent response when the first plan fails.

Review what went wrong after a defeat

  • If you died while surrounded, create more space and use pawns to split attention.
  • If a spell never finished, cast earlier or move to a safer angle before incanting.
  • If arrows did little, increase distance, use Steady Shot when safe, and look for weak points.
  • If a Thief was hit during an attack string, shorten the string and evade sooner.
  • If a block failed, watch the attack’s timing instead of holding defense continuously.

How to use pawns in combat and exploration

Pawns are not passive decorations. Your commands change what they prioritize, and their inclinations influence the behavior they tend toward when you are not giving a direct order. Use a command to solve the current problem, then let the party resume its normal behavior.

“Help!”: call for support, healing, and recovery

Use “Help!” when the party needs support, healing, or recovery. This is the command for stabilizing a fight: it tells pawns to prioritize assistance rather than simply pressing an attack. Call it before an ally becomes critical if you can see that the group is losing health or struggling to recover.

For a Mage-led party, “Help!” can buy the time needed to complete a curative spell. For a Fighter or Thief, it can shift pawn attention toward keeping the group alive while you create space. The command is a priority signal, not a guarantee that every pawn will perform the exact action you imagined; keep moving and reassess if the threat changes.

“Go!”: send pawns ahead or let them act independently

“Go!” tells pawns to act independently. In combat, that can send them toward nearby targets. During exploration, Capcom notes that it can direct them to nearby objects and gathering spots. Use it when you want the party to investigate or engage without keeping every pawn beside the Arisen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because “Go!” gives the party more initiative, avoid using it blindly near an unknown threat. If you need a controlled formation, bring everyone back with “To me!” first, then issue “Go!” once you have identified the target or object.

“To me!”: regroup around the Arisen

Use “To me!” when pawns have spread out, pursued a target too far, or started exploring while you need them nearby. Regroup before entering a narrow area, beginning a difficult fight, or preparing a Mage incantation. A compact party is easier to support and less likely to lose an ally outside your view.

“Wait!”: hold position

“Wait!” tells pawns to hold their position. This is useful when you want to draw an enemy toward the party, keep a pawn away from a hazard, or prevent companions from running ahead while you inspect the route. Remember to issue a new command when the situation changes; a pawn told to wait will not automatically know when you are ready to advance.

A simple command sequence for a messy encounter

  1. Use “To me!” if pawns are scattered.
  2. Position the party where you can see the likely approach.
  3. Use “Go!” to let pawns engage or investigate once the target is clear.
  4. Use “Help!” when healing or recovery becomes the priority.
  5. Use “Wait!” to stop a pawn from overextending or to hold a safe position.
  6. Regroup with “To me!” before moving to the next danger.

What pawn inclinations do

An inclination is a tendency, not an absolute script. It helps explain why two pawns may react differently when you have not issued a direct command. Capcom’s Pawn Inclinations manual identifies four broad patterns:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Inclination Typical tendency When it can help
Kindhearted Support-oriented behavior When healing and assistance should remain a high priority
Calm Defensive tactics When you want a more cautious companion who is less eager to rush
Simple Exploration and gathering When discovering nearby objects and collecting resources matters
Straightforward Aggressive engagement When you want a pawn more willing to press an attack

Match the tendency to the role you need, then correct it with commands when the immediate situation demands something else. A Straightforward pawn can be useful for drawing attention but may need “To me!” or “Wait!” to prevent overextension. A Simple pawn can help during exploration but may require “Go!” when you want it to investigate a nearby object. Inclination informs behavior; it does not replace your judgment.

Building a beginner party around your vocation

If you choose Fighter

Use your shield and positioning to occupy danger while pawns supply support or ranged pressure. “Go!” can start an engagement after you have chosen a defensible position; “Help!” is useful when the party needs recovery rather than more aggression.

If you choose Mage

Give yourself room and let another pawn attract immediate attention before you begin an incantation. Keep “Help!” ready for moments when the party needs healing or recovery, and use “To me!” if companions have moved outside the space you can safely support.

If you choose Archer

Use distance as your first defense. Let pawns occupy enemies while you look for weak points, switching between Loose shot for accessible attacks and Steady Shot when precision is safe. If the enemy closes in, regroup rather than trying to force a shot from an unsafe position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you choose Thief

Coordinate with pawns so you are not the only target. Attack when an enemy is occupied, use Swift Step to evade the response, and call “To me!” if your pursuit has pulled the party apart. Your speed is most valuable when it creates repeated safe openings, not when it keeps you in constant contact.

Later vocations and what to expect

The starting four are not the complete list. Capcom’s vocation information also lists Warrior, Sorcerer, Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster, and Warfarer. New vocations become available as the story progresses, so do not assume every option is selectable at character creation.

That progression is another reason not to overthink the opening choice. Learn the fundamentals with a starting vocation, visit vocation guilds when you want a different role, and treat later unlocks as additional ways to express the same core skills: reading attacks, choosing safe positions, and directing pawns.

A practical first-session checklist

  1. Choose Fighter, Mage, Archer, or Thief according to the decisions you want to make most often.
  2. Open Options and confirm your platform’s controls for weapon skills, recovery items, inventory, and lantern use.
  3. In a low-risk fight, practice your vocation’s defining action: blocking, incanting, aiming, or evading.
  4. Issue each pawn command once so you know how “Help!”, “Go!”, “To me!”, and “Wait!” alter behavior.
  5. Observe your pawns’ inclinations and decide whether their support, defense, exploration, or aggression complements your role.
  6. After a difficult encounter, identify whether the problem was timing, positioning, party separation, or a mismatched command.
  7. Visit a vocation guild when you want to test another playstyle; changing vocation is part of normal progression, not a failure.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Picking a vocation because someone called it the best

No starting vocation is documented as universally best. Choose the role whose risks you are willing to learn, then change at a vocation guild if your preferred decisions evolve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trying to cast while exposed

Mage incantation takes time and leaves you vulnerable. Move first, wait for enemies to commit, and cancel the plan by repositioning when the window disappears.

Using the easiest arrow without considering the target

Loose shot is easier to aim but has limited range and harm. Use Steady Shot when you have a safe, precise opportunity and look for weak points that can take substantial damage.

Letting pawns drift away from the fight

Use “To me!” to regroup, “Wait!” to hold a position, and “Go!” only after you understand where you want the party to act. “Help!” shifts priority toward support, healing, and recovery when survival matters more than pursuit.

Assuming an inclination is an order

Kindhearted, Calm, Simple, and Straightforward describe tendencies. Direct commands still matter, especially when an aggressive pawn overextends or an exploratory pawn needs to return to the party.

The essential takeaway

Dragon’s Dogma 2’s opening is designed to let you learn by doing. Fighter teaches defensive timing, Mage teaches safe preparation, Archer teaches range and precision, and Thief teaches attack-and-evade rhythm. Use the controls that match your platform, direct pawns with short commands instead of hoping they infer your plan, and change vocation at a guild when your preferred style changes. The best beginner choice is the one that makes you want to practice its defining decision.
