If the text in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is hard to read, the first setting to check is the text language: Square Enix documents English and Japanese text and voice choices in Misc. > System Settings > Language Settings. The official English FAQ does not document an in-game font-size or UI-scaling control, so changing voice volume, battle speed, or graphics priority should not be expected to enlarge text. The available choices vary by platform, so treat Steam language support and the Nintendo Switch 2 update as platform-specific.
Which settings can actually help with readability?
There is an important difference between making the game easier to understand and making its letters physically larger. Language settings can help if you read one available language more comfortably than another. The other documented options covered here adjust sound, combat pacing, or visual presentation—not text size.

| Setting | Where to find it | What it changes | Will it enlarge text? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text and voice language | Misc. > System Settings > Language Settings | Language selection; Square Enix documents English and Japanese text and voices. | No. It may make text easier to understand, but no font-size change is documented. |
| Voices volume | Misc. > Audio Settings | Voice audio level; Square Enix says it can be set to zero. | No. It changes audio, not visual legibility. |
| Graphics or frame-rate priority | Switch 2 update option | Chooses whether to prioritize graphics or frame rate; Square Enix describes the update as improving sharpness and smoothness. | Not according to the FAQ. It does not describe this as a text-size setting. |
| Battle speed | Battle-speed options | Combat can run at normal, fast, or ultra-fast speed, as described in Square Enix’s October 14, 2024 pre-release feature article. | No. It changes combat pacing, not dialogue or menu text size. |
The font-size and UI-scaling qualification matters: Square Enix’s English FAQ does not document such a control. That is a limit of what the FAQ establishes, rather than proof that no platform feature or later update could provide a separate workaround.
Change the text language if comprehension is the problem
On the game’s documented language menu
- Open the in-game menu and choose Misc.
- Open System Settings, then Language Settings.
- Choose the available text and voice languages that work best for you.
- Return to the game and check a dialogue box and a menu to confirm the change has made reading more comfortable.
Square Enix’s English FAQ specifically describes switching English and Japanese text and voices through this path. The key benefit is comprehension: a familiar language may be easier to follow, but switching languages does not mean that the game will render the letters at a larger size.

Steam language support is a separate platform-specific detail
The Steam listing for the PC version reports interface and subtitle support in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. It lists full audio in English and Japanese. Do not assume that Steam’s broader interface and subtitle language table applies to console editions; check the language options for the specific version you play.
Steam lists the game’s release date as November 14, 2024, and identifies Square Enix and ARTDINK as its publishers and developer, respectively. Those listing details identify the PC product; they do not establish that every platform has identical language menus or options.

What the other settings do—and when to use them
Turn voices down to reduce audio distraction
Go to Misc. > Audio Settings and lower the Voices volume; Square Enix says zero turns voices off. This can be useful if spoken dialogue competes with your attention or you prefer to read without voice audio. It will not change the size, contrast, or layout of on-screen text, so it is not a visual readability fix.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose Switch 2 presentation priority for motion or image quality
Square Enix says a free Nintendo Switch 2 update improves sharpness and smoothness and adds options to prioritize graphics or frame rate. Choose between those priorities based on the presentation you prefer. The FAQ does not say that either option increases font size, and neither should be treated as an in-game text-scaling control. The update information is specific to Switch 2; do not apply it to other platforms.

Use faster battles only to change combat pacing
Square Enix’s PlayStation Blog feature, published October 14, 2024, describes normal, fast, and ultra-fast battle speeds, as well as autonomous party tactics. Faster battles can shorten the time spent watching combat actions, and autonomous tactics can change how you manage a party during fights. These are combat choices, not ways to enlarge dialogue, menus, or other text. The feature was published before launch, so it describes those gameplay options rather than serving as a complete current settings list for every platform.

Square Enix says game content is the same across versions, while graphics differ according to platform specifications. It also says physical and downloadable editions have no content differences; Steam and Microsoft Store versions are not physically available. These statements do not establish that every platform has the same graphics options, language list, or accessibility features.

- Turn-based combat system and characters with multiple vocations
- Stunning HD 2D graphics that bring the world to life like never before
- Explore a big world full of exciting places and unexpected encounters
- Experience a timeless soundtrack and immerse yourself in the magic of the Dragon Quest universe
- Playing on Steam: Use the Steam listing’s language information for the PC version, not as a promise about consoles.
- Playing on Switch 2: The documented graphics/frame-rate priority option belongs to the Switch 2 update.
- Playing on another console or PC storefront: Check that platform’s own menus and current product information before assuming it has an option documented for another version.
The distinction is useful because the game’s shared content does not mean its platform-specific presentation or settings are interchangeable. The official FAQ describes platform differences in graphics, and the Steam language table is explicitly for the PC listing.
If the text still feels too small
After trying the language that is easiest for you to read, do not mistake an audio or combat setting for a text-size control. The official English FAQ does not document a font-size or UI-scale option. It also does not settle whether a particular console, operating system, display, or later game update offers a separate way to magnify the image.
If you consider a system-level magnification feature or another display workaround, verify the current instructions for your exact platform before relying on it. Such a feature would be separate from a game setting, and magnifying an image may crop or obscure some of the game screen. Increasing the display’s physical size or changing viewing distance may also affect how comfortably you can see the image, but those adjustments do not change the game’s text layout.
For a reliable check, use this order:
- Confirm that the text language is one you can read comfortably.
- Check the game’s actual language and display menus for your platform rather than assuming another edition has the same controls.
- If letters remain too small, look for a current platform-level viewing or magnification option and confirm whether it obscures part of the image.
That sequence separates a comprehension issue from a display-size issue, and avoids spending time on settings that only affect sound or battle speed.
