For the cleanest first viewing, finish Dragon Ball, then watch Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai continuously from the Raditz arrival through the end of the Nappa and Vegeta conflict. None of the early Z movies is required to follow that story.
If you want the optional films, place Dead Zone approximately before Z, then watch the main saga without interruptions. After the Saiyan storyline, you can watch The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might as separate early-Z side stories.
The recommended Saiyan Saga watch order
The Saiyan Saga is easiest to follow when treated as one uninterrupted television storyline. Choose one version—original Dragon Ball Z or the edited Dragon Ball Z Kai—and do not alternate between them as if they were consecutive episodes.
- Finish the original Dragon Ball series. This establishes Goku, his friends, the martial-arts world and the relationships that make the opening of Z meaningful.
- Optional: watch Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone. This is an approximate pre-Z placement, not a required prologue. Its release-order position is later, after Z has already begun.
- Start Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai at episode 1. Continue through the Raditz material, Goku’s training and return, the arrival of Nappa, and the Vegeta battle.
- Stop when the Saiyan conflict is resolved. The next major storyline is the journey to Namek; no movie is needed between those television events.
- Optional: watch The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might. They work best as detached early-Z adventures after you have completed the Saiyan storyline.
This order separates the main story from bonus material. It also avoids trying to force movies into exact gaps where their continuity does not line up cleanly with the series.

What counts as the Saiyan Saga in episodes?
There is no single episode range accepted by every guide, release, or broadcaster. One Crunchyroll arc guide labels episodes 1–6 as the Raditz Saga. Broader episode lists then include the training period, the Saibaman and Nappa battles, and the Vegeta conflict under the larger Saiyan heading. Because those labels differ, an event-based endpoint is more reliable than an unqualified number.
The opening: Raditz and Goku’s origin
Begin with the episode in which a stranger arrives, identifies himself as Goku’s brother, reveals that Goku came from another planet, and takes Gohan. This is the opening premise described in Toei’s Kai catalog entry and is the point at which the Z-era story begins.
The middle: preparation for the Saiyans
Continue through the period in which Earth’s fighters prepare for the coming Saiyan threat. The episodes cover training, reunions and losses that change the group before the invasion. Do not skip ahead based on a list that treats only the Raditz episodes as the saga; those episodes are the first sub-arc, not the entire conflict most viewers mean by Saiyan Saga.

The conclusion: Nappa and Vegeta
Keep watching through the arrival of the Saiyan force, the battle with Nappa and the final confrontation with Vegeta. When the immediate invasion has ended and the story turns toward Namek, you have reached the practical end of the Saiyan Saga for viewing-order purposes.
Why episode numbers can be misleading
Broadcast edits and regional presentations can change how material is labeled. For example, one English-language broadcast segmented The Tree of Might into episodes 46–48 even though it is normally cataloged as a film. Those numbers should not be mixed with the standard Z episode list. Always identify whether a number belongs to the original series, Kai, a dubbed broadcast, or a movie adaptation.

Optional movies and where to put them
The first three Z films are side stories rather than required chapters of the continuous television plot. Toei Animation USA’s catalog gives the following release titles, months and runtimes:
| Film | Toei catalog title | Release month | Runtime | Practical placement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone | Get Back My Gohan | July 1989 | 42 minutes | Optional approximate pre-Z viewing, or release order after Z episodes 1–11 |
| The World’s Strongest | The Strongest Guy in the World | March 1990 | 60 minutes | Optional side story after the Saiyan Saga |
| The Tree of Might | Super Battle in the World | July 1990 | 61 minutes | Optional side story after the Saiyan Saga |
Dead Zone: two legitimate ordering systems
A watch-order guide places Dead Zone after the original Dragon Ball and before Z as an approximate chronological prequel. That is the smoothest choice if you want to see every early-era film before beginning the television sequel.

Release order gives a different answer: the film arrived after Z had started and is commonly placed after episodes 1–11. Neither system creates a mandatory story requirement. Choose chronological flavor for a pre-Z movie night, or release order if you want to experience the franchise as audiences originally received it.
The World’s Strongest
This is the second Z film in Toei’s catalog, released in March 1990 and running 60 minutes. It is not a missing Saiyan Saga episode. Watch it after the television saga as an independent adventure, or follow it in release order after Dead Zone.
The Tree of Might
The third film, released in July 1990, runs 61 minutes. A version was edited into English-language broadcast episodes 46–48, which explains why some episode lists appear to place it inside the series. If you are watching the normal movie, keep it separate from the numbered television episodes; if your edition actually contains the broadcast adaptation, follow that edition’s labeling instead.

Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai?
Both versions present the same opening conflict and can serve as your main Saiyan Saga watch. The choice is about presentation, not a need to watch two separate storylines.

| Dragon Ball Z | The original television presentation, including its original pacing and episode structure. | Viewers who want the first broadcast experience or the complete original presentation. |
| Dragon Ball Z Kai | An edited presentation of the same Z-era story. Toei’s catalog uses the Raditz arrival, Goku’s brother revelation and Gohan’s kidnapping as its opening setup. | Viewers who prefer a streamlined version and want to avoid switching between editions. |
Do not watch Z episode 1, then Kai episode 1, and count them as two installments. They retell the same opening material. Pick one, remain with it through Vegeta’s defeat, and use the other only if you later want to compare presentations.
Canon, continuity and what “optional” means
The films can be enjoyable without fitting into a precise place in the television timeline. The consulted watch-order guide describes the pre-2013 films as largely non-canon extras; that is the guide’s editorial framing, not an official Toei declaration that establishes a universal canon rule.
For a first viewing, “optional” means you can omit the movie and lose no information needed to understand the Raditz, Nappa or Vegeta plot. It does not mean the film is unimportant to every fan. A completionist can watch all three, while a story-only viewer can proceed directly from the television saga to Namek.
Three practical viewing plans
Plan A: main story only
- Complete Dragon Ball.
- Start Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai at episode 1.
- Watch continuously through the end of the Vegeta conflict.
- Continue into the Namek storyline if you want the broader Z narrative.
This is the shortest route with no side-story detours.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Plan B: chronological-style early viewing
- Complete Dragon Ball.
- Watch Dead Zone as an approximate prequel.
- Watch the Saiyan Saga in either Z or Kai from episode 1 through the Vegeta conclusion.
- Watch The World’s Strongest, then The Tree of Might as optional early-Z films.
The word “approximate” matters: the movies do not consistently obey the television continuity, so this is a convenient viewing sequence rather than a mathematically exact timeline.
Plan C: release-oriented film order
- Begin Dragon Ball Z or Kai.
- Place Dead Zone after Z episodes 1–11 if you want to follow its release-era position.
- Continue the television episodes without inserting required movie breaks.
- After the Saiyan Saga, watch The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might in their catalog release order.
This plan preserves the distinction between when a film was released and where a guide estimates it might fit in the story.
How to identify the correct stopping point
Episode numbering is especially unreliable across physical releases, dubbed broadcasts and edited editions. Use these story checks instead of relying on a bare range:
- You have seen the stranger’s revelation that Goku is not originally from Earth.
- Gohan’s kidnapping and the first confrontation with Raditz have been resolved.
- The Earth’s fighters have completed their preparation for the Saiyan arrival.
- The invasion, Nappa battle and Vegeta confrontation have concluded.
- The next destination and objective are connected to Namek rather than defending Earth from the original invasion.
If a guide calls only episodes 1–6 the Saiyan Saga, it is using “Raditz Saga” as a narrower label. If another guide includes the entire invasion, both can be internally consistent because they divide the same story differently.
Common watch-order mistakes
Inserting every movie at an exact episode break
The films were not designed as mandatory interludes in the television plot. Inserting them between episodes can create contradictions in character status, setting or timing. Treat them as optional side trips unless an edition explicitly presents a movie adaptation as part of its broadcast sequence.

Confusing catalog titles with English marketing titles
Toei lists the first three films as Get Back My Gohan, The Strongest Guy in the World and Super Battle in the World. English-language marketing commonly uses Dead Zone, The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might. Searching by either title can identify the same film, but the catalog name is useful when checking release metadata.
Switching between Z and Kai mid-saga
Because both editions cover the same opening events, switching can make you repeat scenes or skip material. Select one edition before episode 1 and finish the Saiyan conflict in that version.
Assuming a streaming listing is universal
Availability changes by country, service and date. A title may be licensed in one territory and absent in another, so verify the current listing for your region rather than relying on an undated watch-order page.
