The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s first clinical trial of an Ebola vaccine is expected to start before the end of October 2026, according to WHO experts quoted on 13–14 October. The Tumaini trial will test whether Ervebo protects people against Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), but enrollment had not been confirmed as of 15 October.
Ervebo is licensed and WHO-prequalified for Ebola virus disease caused by Ebola virus (formerly Zaire ebolavirus). No vaccine is licensed for Bundibugyo virus disease, and WHO says Ervebo’s protection against BVD in humans remains unknown. Until trial evidence is generated, Ervebo should be administered for BVD only under a research protocol.
What the Tumaini trial is designed to answer
Tumaini is a Phase 3, multi-vaccine clinical-trial platform being organized during the 2026 Bundibugyo outbreak. Its central question is whether Ervebo, an rVSV vaccine developed for Zaire Ebola, prevents illness caused by the genetically distinct Bundibugyo virus in humans.
Laboratory and animal findings suggest possible cross-protection, but WHO’s May and September assessments said those signals are not enough to establish human efficacy. Anthony Scott, chair of WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization, said the trial should generate the evidence needed for future policy decisions.

The outbreak has created an urgent setting for the study. AFP reported more than 9,000 cases and over 4,000 deaths by mid-October. Congolese public-health authorities cited in AFP-syndicated coverage reported 9,066 infections and 4,381 deaths. These totals are dated outbreak figures and can change as surveillance improves.
Why Bundibugyo virus requires a separate evidence base
“Ebola” refers to several related viruses. Ervebo’s licensing covers Ebola virus disease caused by the Zaire species, not Bundibugyo virus disease. WHO’s position is therefore different from a claim that Ervebo is a proven Bundibugyo vaccine.

The candidates cannot be ranked by effectiveness before comparative clinical results exist. Their platforms, target virus, development status and dose readiness are different, so a candidate’s presence in the program would not itself demonstrate protection.
When will the trial start?
WHO experts said they had strong reassurance that Tumaini would start before the end of October 2026. That is an expected start window, not confirmation that enrollment had begun. The available reports did not provide a registry identifier, final site list or proof of participant enrollment by 15 October.

- 15 May 2026: WHO classified the DRC/Uganda Bundibugyo outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
- 28 May 2026: WHO expert groups recommended that candidate vaccines be evaluated through clinical trials and highlighted IAVI’s rVSV Bundibugyo and Oxford/Serum Institute’s ChAdOx1 Bundibugyo.
- 20 August 2026: WHO and Africa CDC announced release of 70,000 Ervebo doses, including a 20,000-dose Phase 3 research allocation.
- September 2026: WHO reiterated that human efficacy against BVD was unknown and that Ervebo use should remain within a research protocol.
- 13–14 October 2026: AFP reported WHO experts’ expectation that Tumaini would begin before the end of the month.
How the 70,000 Ervebo doses are being used
The WHO and Africa CDC allocation separates research from outbreak protection. Of the 70,000 doses released, 20,000 were assigned to the Phase 3 trial and 50,000 to frontline and health workers. The allocation supports both evidence generation and protection of people at high occupational risk; it is not evidence that Ervebo works against Bundibugyo virus.
WHO’s Disease Outbreak News update recorded 2,007 people vaccinated as of 6 September 2026 across six health zones in three provinces. That figure describes vaccination activity at that date, not trial efficacy.

Doctors Without Borders was conducting a data-gathering study of Ervebo among frontline health workers, according to AFP. It was described as an observational study rather than a randomized clinical trial, so it should not be treated as the Phase 3 efficacy result.

WHO’s May assessment prioritized clinical evaluation alongside informed consent, surveillance, contact tracing, supportive care, infection prevention and community engagement. Tumaini’s value will depend on reliably identifying infections and outcomes while protecting participants and health workers.

Conflict and displacement complicate every part of that work. WHO experts said insecurity and population movement hinder access to care, case detection, surveillance and research sites. Those conditions can delay enrollment, interrupt follow-up and make it harder to distinguish changes in transmission from vaccine effects.
What is still unresolved
- Whether Tumaini enrollment actually began before the end of October 2026.
- Which DRC locations will host the trial and what registry number will identify it.
- Whether Oxford’s ChAdOx1 Bundibugyo or Moderna’s mRNA candidate will be added after early-stage review.
- How much protection, if any, Ervebo provides against symptomatic or severe BVD.
- Whether the outbreak’s security and displacement conditions will allow complete follow-up.
Until those questions are answered, the accurate description is an urgently planned research trial, not a newly proven Bundibugyo vaccine. The trial’s results will determine whether Ervebo can support future BVD vaccination policy and how other candidates should be developed.
