Choose DPoP for public, browser-based, installed, or otherwise heterogeneous clients that cannot reliably present a client certificate. Choose OAuth mutual TLS (mTLS) for managed service clients when your platform controls certificate issuance, TLS termination, trust, rotation, and revocation. Both methods bind an OAuth token to client-held key material, so a stolen bearer token by itself is not enough to call the API. Neither replaces ordinary HTTPS, and the right Spring configuration depends on the Spring Security and Spring Authorization Server versions and on where TLS terminates in your network.

What sender-constraining changes in an OAuth design

A conventional OAuth access token is a bearer credential: whoever obtains it can present it until it expires or is revoked. Sender-constraining adds proof that the request comes from the party that holds a particular private key. The authorization server records that binding when it issues the token, and the resource server checks it on every protected request.

DPoP and OAuth mTLS implement that idea at different layers. DPoP is an application-layer mechanism. The client signs a JSON Web Token (JWT) proof for each relevant HTTP operation and places the proof in the DPoP header. mTLS is a transport-layer mechanism. The client proves possession of an X.509 private key during the TLS handshake, and the resulting certificate identity is associated with the token.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In both designs, HTTPS still supplies server authentication, confidentiality, and integrity. Sender-constraining addresses a different problem: preventing use of a copied token by a party that does not possess the bound key or certificate.

How DPoP works

Key creation and proof generation

The DPoP client creates a signing key pair and protects the private key in the environment where the client runs. It creates a signed JWT proof and sends that proof in the DPoP HTTP header. The proof covers the request context, so a verifier can check that it was made for the operation being processed rather than copied from an unrelated request.

The same client key is used when obtaining a token and when calling the resource. A client therefore needs a deliberate key-storage policy: an installed application must protect the key from other applications and local extraction, while a browser application must account for the limits of browser storage and script isolation. If the private key is lost, the client cannot create valid proofs for tokens bound to it; if the key is stolen, an attacker may be able to use the associated tokens until the binding is replaced or the tokens are invalidated.

Binding at the token endpoint

When the client requests an access token, it sends a DPoP proof along with the token request. The authorization server validates the proof and binds the issued token to the proof’s public key. A JWT access token can carry that binding in a cnf.jkt confirmation claim containing the public-key thumbprint. If the access token is opaque, introspection can return equivalent binding information to the resource server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is more than a one-time client-authentication check. The binding becomes part of the token’s security context, so the resource server can reject a later request that presents the token with a different key.

Binding at the resource request

For each protected API call, the client sends the access token and creates a fresh DPoP proof for that request. The resource server verifies the proof signature, confirms that the proof key matches the key bound to the token, and checks the access-token hash and request data. A proof for a different method or URI is not interchangeable with the proof for the current request.

Implementations also need replay defenses. Proofs normally carry unique request identity and time information, and a server may require a nonce. The verifier must enforce its accepted time window, detect reuse, and issue or validate nonces according to the protocol behavior supported by the deployed Spring components. These checks are part of sender-constraining, not optional hardening.

What DPoP does and does not provide

  • It prevents a copied access token from being useful without the corresponding signing key and a valid proof.
  • It works without a pre-established client certificate, which is why it is attractive for public clients.
  • It still depends on HTTPS; DPoP is not a replacement for transport encryption or server authentication.
  • It adds application processing on both the authorization and resource servers, including proof parsing, signature verification, request canonicalization, nonce handling, and replay detection.
  • It requires the client to protect a signing key and to create proofs for both token and resource requests.

How OAuth mTLS works

Certificate authentication during TLS

OAuth mTLS, specified for client authentication and certificate-bound access and refresh tokens in RFC 8705, uses an X.509 certificate and its private key. During the TLS handshake, the client presents the certificate and proves possession of the private key. The server validates the certificate against its trust configuration and obtains the authenticated client identity from the connection.

The authorization server can bind the resulting token to that certificate. When the client later connects to the protected resource, the resource verifies that the request arrived with the same certificate-bound identity. A stolen token without the certificate and private key is therefore insufficient.

Why the network path matters

mTLS security depends on preserving client-certificate identity across every hop. If a gateway terminates TLS and opens a new connection to the application, the application no longer sees the original client certificate unless the gateway forwards an authenticated identity through a design that the application trusts and validates. Simply adding an unprotected header at a proxy boundary does not preserve the original proof.

Teams choosing mTLS must decide where TLS terminates, where certificate validation occurs, how identity is forwarded, and which component is authoritative. A service mesh, API gateway, ingress controller, and application may all participate, but their responsibilities must be explicit. End-to-end certificate handling is straightforward only when the platform controls these components together.

Certificate lifecycle obligations

The operational work is substantial: issue certificates to approved clients, distribute private keys securely, configure trust stores, rotate certificates before expiry, revoke compromised or retired certificates, and propagate trust changes to every verifier. Expired or revoked certificates must fail at the appropriate layer, and monitoring must distinguish certificate failures from ordinary TLS or authorization errors.

DPoP and mTLS compared

Axis DPoP OAuth mTLS
Binding layer Application layer using a signed per-request JWT proof Transport layer using a TLS client certificate
Typical client fit Public clients, browser applications, installed applications, and clients on heterogeneous networks Managed confidential clients and service-to-service APIs
Key material Client-held signing key; proof sent in an HTTP header X.509 certificate and private key used by TLS
Infrastructure dependency Authorization and resource servers must understand DPoP and enforce replay protections Proxies, gateways, and services must preserve or securely forward client-certificate identity
Browser practicality Designed for situations where user agents cannot reliably use TLS client authentication Certificate enrollment and user-agent behavior can make browser deployment difficult
Main operational burden Proof validation, nonce and replay controls, key storage, and request canonicalization Certificate issuance, rotation, revocation, trust stores, TLS passthrough, and identity forwarding
Token replay resistance A stolen token alone is insufficient without the private signing key and a valid proof A stolen token alone is insufficient without the bound certificate and private key

Which method fits your Spring API?

Choose DPoP for public or user-device clients

DPoP is usually the better fit when the client is a browser application, a mobile or desktop installation, or software deployed on devices that you do not centrally administer. It avoids distributing a client certificate through every user-agent and network path. It also accommodates clients that move between networks where TLS client authentication is impractical.

This choice does not remove endpoint risk. The client still has to protect its signing key, and the API must enforce every DPoP verification rule consistently. A design that accepts a DPoP-bound token through a bearer-only code path defeats the intended protection.

Choose mTLS for managed machine clients

mTLS is usually the better fit when a platform team controls the calling services, certificate authority or issuance workflow, ingress and egress gateways, trust stores, and rotation schedule. Service-to-service traffic inside a controlled environment can make certificate provisioning predictable and allow central policy enforcement.

mTLS becomes harder when traffic crosses user-managed devices, browser user agents, third-party networks, or intermediaries that terminate TLS without a trustworthy certificate-forwarding design. In those environments, the transport identity may not survive to the resource server.

Use a split architecture when client populations differ

A single authorization server and API estate can support different sender-constraining methods for different clients. For example, a browser-facing client can obtain DPoP-bound tokens while an internal service receives a certificate-bound token. The resource server or gateway must know which binding type applies to each token and must reject a request that does not satisfy that token’s method.

Do not select one mechanism merely for organizational uniformity if the network and client capabilities are different. Document the accepted binding for each client class, token audience, and route, then test that a token issued for one class cannot be replayed through another class’s validation path.

Spring version and deployment decisions to make first

Spring Security and Spring Authorization Server expose protocol support through versioned components. Before writing configuration, record the exact versions in production and in each environment where tokens are issued or consumed. Configuration examples from another release may use different properties, extension points, or defaults.

Spring Authorization Server’s overview treats both DPoP-bound access tokens and OAuth 2.0 mutual-TLS client authentication with certificate-bound access tokens (RFC 8705) as supported areas. That establishes both as legitimate Spring ecosystem options, but it does not make a single configuration portable across versions.

  1. Inventory components. List the authorization server, every resource server, API gateway, reverse proxy, service mesh, and TLS termination point.
  2. Map token flows. Record which clients use which grant and which token endpoint, and identify whether tokens are JWTs or opaque values requiring introspection.
  3. Choose the enforcement point. Decide whether DPoP or mTLS is checked at the authorization server, gateway, resource server, mesh, or a combination. Assign one owner for the final decision so that an upstream check cannot be silently bypassed downstream.
  4. Verify version capabilities. Use the reference documentation for the exact Spring Security and Spring Authorization Server versions you deploy. Confirm support for token binding, proof or certificate validation, introspection data, and the failure responses expected by your clients.
  5. Define observability. Log binding-type failures without recording private keys or complete tokens. Capture enough context to distinguish a missing proof, a mismatched key, a replayed proof, an invalid certificate, and a proxy identity failure.

Implementing a DPoP flow: an operational blueprint

1. Establish the client key policy

Decide how keys are generated, stored, protected, rotated, and recovered on each client platform. The authorization server must receive the public key through the DPoP proof, while the private key remains under client control. Define what happens when a device is reset, an installation is removed, or compromise is suspected.

2. Protect the token request

Require a valid DPoP proof on the token request. The authorization server should validate the proof signature and request context, then issue a token whose confirmation data identifies that public key. For a JWT access token, verify that the key thumbprint appears in the cnf.jkt claim. For an opaque token, ensure introspection returns equivalent binding information to the resource server.

3. Protect every API request

The client sends the access token and a newly created DPoP proof in the DPoP header for each protected operation. The resource server verifies the proof, compares its key with the token’s confirmation data, checks the proof’s access-token hash, and validates the method and URI represented by the proof.

4. Enforce time, nonce, and replay rules

Set an accepted proof lifetime appropriate to the deployment, account for reasonable clock skew, and retain enough proof identity to detect reuse. If the server issues a nonce, require the client to include it in subsequent proofs according to the protocol behavior implemented by the deployed components. Treat nonce, replay, and canonicalization failures as authentication failures rather than falling back to bearer-token acceptance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test key and token rotation together

A token remains bound to the key used when it was issued. Test the client behavior when it rotates keys, receives a new token, loses its key, or attempts to use an older token with a new key. The recovery path should obtain a fresh binding rather than weakening validation.

Implementing an mTLS flow: an operational blueprint

1. Define certificate trust and identity

Choose the certificate authority or trust anchors, the subject or identity attributes that identify a client, certificate validity periods, and revocation behavior. Document which service validates the chain and which service maps the certificate to the OAuth client.

2. Authenticate at the authorization server

Configure the token endpoint to require TLS client authentication for the relevant client registrations. The authorization server validates the handshake certificate and binds the issued access or refresh token to that certificate identity as specified by the mTLS profile.

3. Preserve identity to the resource server

Prefer TLS passthrough when the resource server is intended to validate the client certificate directly. If a gateway must terminate TLS, define a secure identity-forwarding mechanism, authenticate the gateway, protect the forwarding channel, and ensure the resource server cannot accept the identity header from an untrusted source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Operate issuance and rotation

Automate certificate issuance where possible, distribute private keys through protected channels, rotate before expiry, and update trust stores without creating an unintended outage. During rotation, determine whether both old and new certificates are temporarily valid and how token bindings behave across that overlap.

5. Exercise revocation and failure paths

Verify that an expired certificate, a revoked certificate, an unknown issuer, a hostname or identity mismatch, and a missing client certificate all fail as intended. Test a gateway that strips the original certificate and confirm that the downstream service does not mistake an unauthenticated connection for the original client.

Where to enforce sender-constraining

Authorization server

The authorization server establishes the binding when it issues the token. It must reject an invalid DPoP proof or an untrusted mTLS client certificate rather than issuing an apparently bound token without a reliable identity.

API gateway

A gateway can centralize validation for many APIs, reducing duplicated configuration. It also becomes a critical trust boundary: for mTLS, it may be the only component that sees the client certificate; for DPoP, it must pass the proof and binding result without allowing downstream routes to bypass checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resource server

The resource server remains responsible for ensuring that the presented token is usable for the current request. Even if a gateway validates a proof or certificate, the service should have a clearly defined trust contract and should not silently accept a bearer token when sender-constraining was required for that audience.

Service mesh

A mesh can provide managed mTLS between workloads, but that channel is not automatically the same as OAuth certificate-bound token use. Distinguish workload-to-workload transport authentication from the certificate identity bound to an OAuth token, and document how the two identities are correlated.

Failure modes and troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Token is rejected because proof is missing The client sent a DPoP-bound token through a bearer-only request path Confirm the client sends a proof in the DPoP header and that the route requires DPoP rather than accepting bearer fallback
Proof signature is valid but request fails The proof key does not match the token binding, or the proof describes another request Compare the proof key with the token’s cnf.jkt or introspection binding and verify method, URI, and access-token hash checks
Intermittent DPoP failures Clock skew, nonce handling, proof reuse, or inconsistent canonicalization Inspect synchronized clocks, nonce state, replay storage, and whether every verifier constructs the same request representation
mTLS client is rejected at one hop only A proxy terminated TLS or failed to forward trusted client identity Map TLS termination and verify the downstream trust contract; do not trust an unprotected client-identity header
Previously valid mTLS calls fail after a date change Certificate expiry, revocation, or stale trust stores Check certificate validity, revocation status, issuer chain, and trust-store rollout on every verifier
Token works with the wrong client A resource path is treating a sender-constrained token as an ordinary bearer token Require the binding check at the final enforcement point and add a regression test for token theft without the bound key

Security and operations checklist

  • Keep HTTPS enabled for every token and resource request.
  • Document whether each token is bearer, DPoP-bound, or certificate-bound.
  • For DPoP, protect private signing keys, validate proof request data, enforce nonce and replay rules, and reject key mismatches.
  • For mTLS, control certificate issuance, private-key storage, trust anchors, rotation, revocation, and identity forwarding.
  • Test authorization-server and resource-server behavior independently; a passing token request does not prove that resource enforcement is correct.
  • Test missing proofs, wrong proofs, reused proofs, wrong URIs or methods, expired certificates, revoked certificates, and proxy termination that removes client identity.
  • Make failure responses observable without logging complete access tokens, proofs, certificates, or private key material.
  • Review sender-constraining after every gateway, mesh, TLS, or Spring framework upgrade because version and topology changes can alter enforcement behavior.

Practical decision framework

Use the following sequence when several teams own the client and API infrastructure:

  1. Can the client reliably present a certificate through every network hop? If no, mTLS is a poor fit for that client class; evaluate DPoP.
  2. Can the client securely hold and use a signing key? If no, DPoP cannot provide its intended proof-of-possession guarantee; redesign key protection or use a different client architecture.
  3. Who controls TLS termination and certificate lifecycle? If a central platform controls issuance, trust, rotation, revocation, and forwarding, mTLS becomes easier to govern.
  4. Who owns replay and nonce enforcement? If the organization cannot operate proof validation consistently at every resource boundary, DPoP deployment risk is high.
  5. Are there multiple client populations? Assign the method per population and enforce the declared binding at the resource audience instead of forcing one mechanism onto incompatible clients.

Bottom line for Spring teams

DPoP is the application-level choice for clients that need sender-constrained OAuth without dependable TLS client authentication, especially browsers, installed applications, and devices spread across networks you do not control. mTLS is the transport-level choice for managed machine clients when your platform can make certificate identity continuous from the TLS handshake to the protected resource.

In Spring, treat the protocol choice and the deployment topology as one design problem. Pin the exact Spring Security and Spring Authorization Server versions, assign the enforcement point, and test the failure paths before production. A token is only as strongly sender-constrained as the last component that verifies its proof or certificate.
