Yes, a counterfeit WhatsApp listing was recently reported on Google Play. Reports published on October 16–17, 2026 said an app using WhatsApp’s name, icon, description and screenshots had passed 500,000 downloads. The copy was published by Agment Assets sallu, not WhatsApp. The reports establish impersonation, but they do not prove that every installation contained malware or that data was stolen.
What happened on Google Play
Digit and Android Authority reported that a listing titled “WhatsApp Messenger” had been available since September and appeared in a sponsored result. It copied the branding and store presentation of the genuine app and exceeded 500,000 downloads.
The official WhatsApp listing showed a 10B+ download badge in Android Authority’s October 2026 report. That number is useful context, but download totals are not a security test: a counterfeit app can accumulate substantial installs before it is removed. The publisher name is the more important check.

How to check whether your installed app is genuine
- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.
- Select Manage apps & device, then Manage, and open WhatsApp. You can also search for WhatsApp and open the page for the installed app.
- Under the app title, verify that the developer line says exactly WhatsApp LLC.
- Look for spelling changes, an unfamiliar publisher, altered icon details, or a page reached through an advertisement. The reported copy listed Agment Assets sallu.
- Check the app’s update history and permissions. An unusual update source, unexpected permission request or inability to match WhatsApp’s official listing is a reason to stop using it.
Do not rely on the name, icon, screenshots or download count alone. Those are precisely the elements the reported listing copied.
What to do if you installed the suspicious version
- Do not sign in again or enter sensitive information. Avoid sending new messages through an untrusted build.
- Capture the publisher and app details if you need them for a report, but do not export private chats to the app or to an unknown backup utility.
- Uninstall the unofficial app. WhatsApp says Google may disable and uninstall unofficial applications after a Play Protect warning.
- Install WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business from an official WhatsApp source, then open it and re-register your phone number.
- Use only trusted, documented WhatsApp migration tools to restore data. WhatsApp warns that it cannot guarantee chat-history transfer from an unsupported unofficial version.
- Review your Google account, email and other important accounts for unexpected sign-ins or password-reset messages. Change credentials from a trusted device if you entered them into the suspicious app.
WhatsApp’s help guidance says that a Play Protect warning stating you are likely using an unofficial version means the app is unsupported; follow the removal and re-registration instructions rather than attempting to keep the installation active.

How to interpret a Play Protect warning
Google defines malware broadly as code that can put a user, their data or their device at risk, including trojans, phishing and spyware. Android app verification and Google Play Protect can warn about or block potentially harmful software. Google’s warning-string documentation includes “This app is fake” for phishing detections.
Those controls lower risk but are not a substitute for checking the publisher. A sponsored result can still make an impersonating page look credible, and a warning may arrive after installation. For this incident, describe the listing as counterfeit and untrusted or potentially harmful. Do not state that every downloader was infected unless independent forensic evidence confirms a malicious payload.
What is known—and what is not
| Question | Established information |
|---|---|
| How many installs were reported? | More than 500,000, according to Digit and Android Authority in October 2026. |
| Who published the reported copy? | Agment Assets sallu. |
| Who publishes the official app? | WhatsApp LLC. |
| Was malware confirmed in every installation? | No. The reports establish impersonation, not a confirmed payload or universal infection. |
| Is a package name available? | Not in the published reports. |
| Are permissions and forensic results available? | No verified permissions list or independent malware analysis was provided. |
| Was an authoritative Google takedown notice published? | Not established by the available reporting. |
Why Google Play checks still matter
Google reported that its 2025 activity, published on February 19, 2026, included scanning more than 350 billion Android apps daily, identifying more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play, preventing more than 1.75 million policy-violating apps from publication and banning more than 80,000 bad developer accounts. These figures show the scale of automated and policy enforcement; they do not mean every impersonator is caught before users see it.

For WhatsApp specifically, compare the publisher identity, download source, Play Protect status, permissions, update provenance and whether WhatsApp supports the build. Feature comparisons and download totals are poor safety measures because they can reward a convincing clone.
Will your chats come back after removal?
There is no guaranteed answer for chats created or stored by an unofficial build. WhatsApp explicitly warns that chat-history transfer may fail because unofficial apps are unsupported. Preserve only what you can through trusted WhatsApp migration procedures, and do not hand an unknown app an export of sensitive conversations merely to create a backup.

The practical decision
If the installed listing names WhatsApp LLC, came from the normal Play Store page and has no Play Protect warning, the reported counterfeit listing is not proof that your copy is fake. If the publisher differs, the listing came through an advertisement, or Play Protect says the app is fake or unofficial, treat it as untrusted: stop using it, remove it and reinstall from an official WhatsApp source.
