You can download an X video without installing software when X offers the Download video option: open the video, tap its three-dot menu, and select Download video. X limits this feature to Premium subscribers and eligible posts. To get videos attached to your own account, request your X archive instead.
Download an eligible video from an X post
- Open the post containing the video in X.
- Tap the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner of the video.
- Select Download video.
X says Premium subscribers can download videos from certain posts. The option applies to videos uploaded from July 25, 2023, unless the person who posted the video disabled downloads while composing the post. X’s video help page describes the feature and its limits.
Why “Download video” may not appear
If the menu does not offer a download, check the account and post conditions X documents:

- Uploader’s choice: The uploader can disable downloads while composing a post. X says this setting cannot be changed for that post later; to disable downloads for future viewers after posting, the uploader must delete the post.
- Account age: Video downloading is automatically turned off for accounts belonging to users under 18, who cannot change that setting.
A missing option does not establish that another service can download the video or bypass the uploader’s setting. X’s documented in-post method is the menu option when it is available.

Be cautious with third-party download services
This method does not require a third-party app. If you consider connecting one, check the permissions it requests before granting access. Depending on the permissions, an app may be able to read posts, post on your behalf, access Direct Messages, or view your email address. X explains these risks in its guidance on third-party apps and login sessions. Do not assume an external service can access a video that X makes unavailable for download.

Downloading does not settle reuse rights
The presence of a download option only describes what X allows through that feature. It does not by itself establish permission to repost, distribute, or otherwise reuse someone else’s video. The applicable rights can depend on the video and where you are; X’s download instructions do not determine them for a particular post.
