Download WildFly from the official WildFly downloads page, choose the server variant your project needs, then extract its ZIP or TAR.GZ archive. The WildFly 40 Getting Started Guide says to “Simply extract your chosen download to the directory of your choice.” Before you launch it, check the Java requirement in the guide for the exact release you selected.
What WildFly download should you choose?
WildFly is an open-source Java application server in the JBoss project lineage. It is not the same product as Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP).
The WildFly 40 Getting Started Guide lists three server variants. Choose based on the Jakarta EE level or preview features your application needs:

Each variant is offered as ZIP and TAR.GZ in the WildFly 40 guide. Select whichever archive format is easiest to extract on your operating system. Release numbers and filenames change, so confirm the current version and download names on the official downloads page.

How to download and install the archive
- Open the WildFly downloads page and select the required variant and release.
- Choose the ZIP or TAR.GZ archive for that distribution and download it.
- Extract the archive to a directory where you want the server files to live. The WildFly 40 guide says archive installation works on any operating system that supports ZIP or TAR formats.
- Check the selected release’s Java requirements and startup instructions in its documentation before starting the server. Use the scripts and configuration included with that release.
The archive approach is the simplest route for a local installation. WildFly also documents custom provisioning with the WildFly Maven Plugin or Galleon CLI, and building a bootable JAR; those approaches are for different deployment or packaging needs.
Which Java version do you need?
Java SE is required. The WildFly 40 guide recommends the latest update of the current long-term-support Java release, but the available guide text does not establish a precise minimum or recommended version. Check the compatibility details for the exact release you download rather than assuming a version range.

A separate official guided application-development workflow specifies Java 17 or later, preferably Java 21, and Maven. Those are requirements for that workflow, not proof of the server distribution’s full compatibility range. Maven is not identified as necessary merely to download, extract, and launch the server archive.

Use the startup documentation included with your selected release and inspect its bin directory for the applicable script. An older official guide gives standalone.bat for Windows and standalone.sh for Linux, Unix, or macOS, but those are version-15-era examples; do not treat them as guaranteed current commands without checking your release’s files and guide.

For Linux hosts, the WildFly 40 guide also describes configuring a systemd service. That is optional operational setup after installation, not part of downloading and extracting the server.
