If you are looking for Snip & Sketch in Windows 11, look for Snipping Tool instead. Microsoft replaced the older app name and now distributes the Windows 11 screenshot and screen-recording app as Snipping Tool.
In most Windows 11 installations, Snipping Tool is already included, so you do not need to download it. If it is missing, damaged, or needs an update, you can install or reinstall it through Microsoft Store.
Check whether Snipping Tool is already installed
Snipping Tool normally ships with Windows 11. Check for it before opening Microsoft Store:
- Select Start.
- Type snipping tool.
- Select Snipping Tool from the search results.
You can also open it directly with the image-capture shortcut Windows + Shift + S. This opens the snipping overlay without requiring you to browse through the Start menu.

Install Snipping Tool from Microsoft Store
If the app does not appear in Windows Search, install it from the Microsoft Store. The current listing is called Snipping Tool, not Snip & Sketch.
- Select Start.
- Type Microsoft Store, then select it.
- Search for Snipping Tool.
- Select the result named Snipping Tool.
- Select Get.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account if Microsoft Store requests one.
The official Store product ID is 9MZ95KL8MR0L. You can open the direct listing at apps.microsoft.com/detail/9mz95kl8mr0l. If the browser page appears blank or incomplete, that does not necessarily mean the app is unavailable; the page requires JavaScript. Searching for Snipping Tool inside the Microsoft Store app is usually more reliable.
Use Snipping Tool to capture an image
After opening Snipping Tool, choose the capture type under Snipping Mode:

- Open Snipping Tool.
- Select Snipping Mode.
- Choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- Select New.
- Capture the area you need.
The keyboard shortcut Windows + Shift + S opens the image-snipping overlay directly. You can then select the capture area without first opening the full app window.
Capture a delayed screenshot
A delay is useful when you need to open a menu, hover over an option, or arrange a window before taking the screenshot.

- Open Snipping Tool.
- Use the Alt + D shortcut to set a delay from 1 to 5 seconds.
- Select New.
- Prepare the screen while the countdown runs.
- Capture the required area.
Record your screen with Snipping Tool
Current versions of Snipping Tool can record video as well as capture still images. This video-snipping feature was introduced for Windows 11 in 2023.
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Select Record.
- Select New.
- Drag over the part of the screen you want to record.
- Select Start.
- When finished, select Stop.
The video-recording overlay can also be opened with Windows + Shift + R.
Save or copy a snip
Windows 11 automatically saves captured snips to the Screenshots folder. To change the automatic-save behavior or the default folder:
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Select See More.
- Select Settings.
- Change the available saving options.
To save an additional copy manually, select Save as, choose a folder and filename, and select Save. You can copy a capture to the clipboard with Ctrl + C and save it with Ctrl + S.
Reinstall or update Snipping Tool
If Snipping Tool is installed but will not open, crashes, or behaves incorrectly, use Microsoft Store’s Library.

Update the app
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Allow Microsoft Store to install any available Snipping Tool update.
Reinstall the app
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find Snipping Tool.
- Select Install.
If the app is listed in Library but does not have an install control, update Windows and restart the computer before trying again.
Fix Microsoft Store when Snipping Tool will not install
Reset Microsoft Store
A damaged Store cache can prevent an app from downloading or make the Get button fail.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
A blank Command Prompt window may appear. After approximately 10 seconds, it closes and Microsoft Store opens automatically. Try searching for Snipping Tool again.
Install pending Windows and Store updates
Install Windows updates first:
- Select Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Select Install now if updates are offered.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
Then update Store apps:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
Check why Microsoft Store is missing
If Microsoft Store does not appear in Start search, type Microsoft Store anyway and check the results. It may only have been unpinned from the taskbar. Microsoft also identifies a local Windows account and a work-device administrator’s policy as possible reasons the Store is unavailable.
On a company-managed PC, an administrator may have disabled Microsoft Store. In that situation, do not download an unofficial copy of the app; ask the organization’s IT administrator to restore or deploy it.

Why the Get or Install button may be unavailable
Microsoft Store can hide or disable the installation control for several reasons:
- Snipping Tool is unavailable in your country or region.
- Microsoft family settings hide or restrict the app.
- The PC is incompatible with the app.
- Windows was recently updated but the computer has not been restarted.
- You are not signed in with the Microsoft account required for Store apps.
- The app is temporarily or permanently unavailable from the Store.
Restart the PC, sign in to Microsoft Store, install pending updates, and run wsreset.exe before treating a missing button as an app-specific failure.
Snip & Sketch versus Snipping Tool
Snip & Sketch is the older name that still appears in some search results, tutorials, and older Windows instructions. For Windows 11, Microsoft’s current app name is Snipping Tool. The modern app includes image snipping, automatic screenshot saving, annotation and editing features, and screen recording.
Do not search for a separate “Snip & Sketch” download from an unknown website. Use the built-in app or the official Microsoft Store listing. Microsoft also deprecated Steps Recorder beginning with the Windows 11 update released in February 2024 and identifies Snipping Tool as the replacement for screen recording.

Is Snip & Sketch still available in Windows 11?
The current Windows 11 app is called Snipping Tool. If an older guide says to download Snip & Sketch, search for Snipping Tool instead. It is normally included with Windows 11.

Do I need to download Snipping Tool?
Usually not. Select Start, type snipping tool, and open it from the search results. If it is missing, install it through Microsoft Store by searching for Snipping Tool and selecting Get.
What is the shortcut for Snipping Tool?
Press Windows + Shift + S to open the image-snipping overlay. Press Windows + Shift + R to open the video-recording overlay.
Where are Snipping Tool screenshots saved?
Windows 11 automatically saves captured snips to the Screenshots folder. You can change automatic-save settings and the default folder under See More → Settings.
Can Snipping Tool record video?
Yes. Open Snipping Tool, select Record, select New, choose the recording area, select Start, and select Stop when finished.
Why can’t I find Snipping Tool in Microsoft Store?
The Store may restrict the app because of your region, family settings, device compatibility, a pending Windows restart, account sign-in requirements, or app availability. A work administrator may also restrict Microsoft Store.
