Download Samsung Smart Switch from Samsung’s official website: open the Smart Switch page for your region, choose the Windows or Mac download, then run the installer. Most newer Galaxy phones and tablets already have the mobile app; older Galaxy devices and other Android phones may need it from the Galaxy Store or Google Play.
Download and install Smart Switch on a computer

Open Samsung’s Smart Switch page for your region. Samsung says its PC/Mac software is free. Use the local Samsung subsidiary’s page for the installer and requirements that apply where you live.

Choose the download for Windows or Mac OS and save the installer.

Open the downloaded file and follow the installation wizard. Samsung Australia’s guide, updated August 20, 2026, says Windows users may be asked to restart after installation.

Launch Smart Switch. To back up or restore a phone, connect it with a USB cable that supports data transfer, then allow the connection on the phone if prompted. A charging-only cable will not work for computer backup.
Does Smart Switch need to be installed on the phone?
Not always. Samsung says Smart Switch is already installed on most newer Galaxy phones and tablets. On an older Galaxy or another Android device, look for the app in the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store. The computer installer is separate from the mobile app.

Check compatibility before downloading
Samsung’s published minimum requirements differ across regional pages and use cases, so they should not be treated as one universal specification. Its US troubleshooting page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later; it lists Android 4.3 or later for general transfers and Android 7.0 or later for encrypted data transfer. The same US page says Chromebooks are not compatible.

Its phone-and-tablet FAQ lists Android 6.0 or higher and iOS 12 or higher. Check the requirements on your own regional Samsung page before installing, especially if you are transferring encrypted data or using an iPhone.

Choose a transfer or backup method

| Computer backup and restore | Keeping a computer copy before moving to a new Galaxy | Install Smart Switch on the computer, connect the source phone by data-capable USB, select Backup, and later connect the new Galaxy and select Restore. The computer needs enough free storage for the backup. |

Samsung’s transfer options and supported content can vary by device, operating system, OS version, and connection method. Check the prompts in the app for the specific devices you are moving between.
What Smart Switch may not move
Smart Switch can move contacts, photos, messages, and other files, but it does not guarantee a complete copy of every phone’s contents. Samsung notes that secure or encrypted content, including some WhatsApp chats, may not transfer; DRM-protected content cannot transfer. Some app data or logins may not carry over, and an app without an equivalent on the destination platform may be unavailable. Save account credentials and check important apps’ own backup instructions before switching.

Samsung says a transfer does not delete data from either device. Keep the original phone until you have checked the new one and confirmed that the files and accounts you need are available.
If the computer does not recognize the phone

Try a different USB cable and port. Not all USB cables carry data.

Unlock the phone and accept any connection prompt shown on its screen.

Reinstall the Samsung device driver through Smart Switch if the computer still does not detect the device.

If the transfer is a computer backup, confirm the computer has enough free storage for the backup file.
