“Download More RAM” is the name of a security attack—not a way to add memory with software. Researchers demonstrated that a Windows attacker who already has local administrator privileges could exploit unprotected configuration data on some memory modules to create aliased memory and undermine protections that should isolate sensitive parts of the operating system. The attack does not apply to every Windows PC, and it is not an unauthenticated internet exploit.

What “Download More RAM” means

Physical RAM cannot be added by downloading a program. The phrase is the deliberately provocative name of a research attack by Sam Collins, Tom Chothia, William Burgess, Marius Muench and David Oswald. Their paper appeared at the 35th USENIX Security Symposium in Baltimore in August 2026, received a Distinguished Paper Award and is available open access from USENIX.

The work concerns Serial Presence Detect (SPD), configuration data stored on a memory module’s EEPROM. A computer reads this data to learn about the DIMM, including its capacity and operating characteristics. On a module without the relevant SPD write protection, an attacker with administrator access can alter what the system is told about addressable memory. The resulting addresses can alias physical memory that Windows and its security features expect to remain isolated.

In practical terms, the researchers demonstrated a software-only route on Windows 11: no screwdriver or direct handling of the target hardware was needed. That does not mean an attacker can simply send a link or run the technique as an ordinary user. The paper’s model assumes both local administrator privileges and an affected DIMM configuration.

How the memory weakness affects Windows security

Modern Windows security features rely on isolation boundaries. The attack uses memory aliasing to reach memory through an address path that those protections are meant to prevent. The paper reports demonstrations affecting VBS-protected processes, Windows Defender, third-party antivirus and endpoint detection and response (EDR), device management, and kernel-level game anti-cheat. Its summary says the technique can reach the secure kernel and Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI).

These results describe demonstrated impacts under the researchers’ conditions, not an assertion that every installation of each product can be bypassed. Nor does the work show that an attacker can obtain administrator privileges through SPD manipulation alone. The prerequisite matters: the attacker must already have local administrator access on a system with susceptible memory configuration.

Which memory modules and computers are in scope?

The researchers surveyed consumer DDR4 and DDR5 DIMMs. A University of Birmingham summary of the findings identifies at least one product line each from Corsair, G.Skill and ADATA with the relevant configuration chip left unprotected. It also says some Crucial, Kingston, HyperX and G.Skill modules had partial write protection sufficient to block this attack.

These are product-line findings, not blanket judgments about every module from a named company. The available findings do not provide a complete model-by-model list, and a brand name alone cannot establish whether a particular DIMM is affected. The system’s motherboard and firmware settings, SPD write protection, Windows configuration and security update status also matter.

The researchers estimate that the named vendors together account for over 55% of the high-performance consumer memory market and over 70% of the gaming memory segment. Those are estimates for the specified market segments, not estimates that the same share of all computers—or of all Windows PCs—is vulnerable.

What the researchers demonstrated—and what they did not

The paper describes a technically challenging chain rather than a reliable one-click bypass. The researchers report that aliased-memory configurations could cause early boot failures, and that writes through a RAM-disk approach were brittle and could crash the system. They describe stabilizing the system, reading aliased memory, obtaining a limited write primitive and expanding capability through code-integrity changes.

Those constraints are important when judging the risk: the work demonstrates a serious security weakness, but it does not establish that every affected machine can be compromised in the same way or with the same reliability. This article does not give steps for altering SPD data or attempting the attack.

What Windows users and PC administrators can do

The paper says Microsoft assigned the issue CVE-2026-23670 and included a mitigation in the April 2026 security update, while characterizing the patch as partial. The University of Birmingham says Windows systems with Secure Boot enabled are protected against the attack in its current form. Because these are reported mitigations rather than a complete compatibility matrix, check Microsoft’s current CVE and security guidance for the affected Windows release before deciding what applies to a particular machine.

  • 【What You Get】16 GB USB Flash Drive Thumb Drive, The default format of the usb storage flash drive is FAT32.
  • Keep Windows updated. Confirm that the April 2026 security update and any later applicable updates are installed; consult Microsoft’s current guidance for exact build and applicability details.
  • Check Secure Boot. Verify its status in the PC’s firmware settings or Windows system information. The reported protection applies to the attack in its current form; do not treat that statement as proof that every related risk is eliminated.
  • Check SPD write protection and utility support. The University of Birmingham reports that Corsair added an iCUE write-protection feature and that HWiNFO adopted similar functionality for non-Corsair models. Confirm module compatibility and current instructions with the utility and memory manufacturer rather than assuming any one tool supports every DIMM.
  • Review motherboard firmware options. Some motherboards have BIOS settings that block writes to configuration chips. Whether an option exists, what it is called and which modules it protects depend on the motherboard; check its manufacturer’s documentation before changing firmware settings.
  • For managed systems, treat admin access as a key control. Since the paper assumes local administrator privileges, limit those privileges and investigate unexpected administrator access through the organization’s normal incident-response process.

Secure Boot status, the DIMM’s SPD write-protection support, utility compatibility and available BIOS controls are the useful axes for checking a specific PC. The cited findings do not establish a universally recommended replacement RAM product, and buying generic replacement memory is not supported as a general mitigation.

Why the “no physical access” finding needs context

Earlier attacks of this broad kind required physical access to the target. This research describes a software-only route, which changes how an already-privileged attacker might reach the weakness. It does not remove the need for an initial foothold: the attacker model still requires local administrator access and a susceptible memory configuration. The distinction is central to interpreting the headline and the real-world risk.
