On a Samsung Galaxy phone, “download messages” usually means backing them up for later restoration or transferring them to another phone—not saving them as a readable computer document. Samsung’s Smart Switch computer backup can preserve messages, but Samsung says message contents cannot be viewed in the backup files on a computer.
Choose the method that matches what you need
| Method | Best for | What you get | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Cloud | Backing up and restoring on supported Galaxy phones | Restorable message data | Requires a Samsung account and feature availability on your device. |
| Google backup | Restoring during setup of a new phone or after a factory reset | Messages restored to a device | Requires an existing backup and the Google account used to make it. |
| Smart Switch on a computer | Keeping a backup on a PC or Mac for future restoration | Restorable backup | Message contents are not readable from the backup files on the computer. |
| Smart Switch phone-to-phone | Moving message history to a replacement phone | Messages transferred to the new phone | Follow the prompts on both devices; compatibility and options vary. |
| Smart Switch external storage | Restoring from an SD card, USB drive, or SSD | Message data restored to a Galaxy phone | Both the phone and storage device must be supported; USB storage may need an OTG adapter. |
These are backup, restore, and transfer routes. If your goal is a readable transcript or standalone file on a computer, Samsung’s documented Smart Switch computer backup does not provide that.
Back up or restore messages with Samsung Cloud
Back up messages
- On the Galaxy phone, open Settings → Accounts and backup → Back up data under Samsung Cloud.
- Select Messages, then tap Back up now.
Restore messages
- Open Settings → Accounts and backup → Restore data.
- Select the device backup, choose Messages, and tap Restore.
You need to be signed in to the Samsung account associated with the backup. Samsung Cloud options can depend on the phone model, software, and market, so the menu or feature may not be available on every Galaxy device. See Samsung’s message transfer, backup, and restore guidance.
Restore messages from a Google backup
Google backup is a restore route, not a way to download a separate, readable message file. Samsung’s recovery guidance describes restoring backed-up messages while setting up a phone for the first time or after a factory reset:

Restore prompts and available data depend on the backup and device. Samsung’s recovery guidance for Galaxy messages covers Google backup alongside Samsung’s other recovery options.
Back up messages to a PC or Mac with Smart Switch
- Install Smart Switch on a compatible computer and phone.
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable and allow the connection on the phone.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer and choose Backup.
- Select message data and start the backup.
This saves a restorable backup; it does not create a message archive you can browse on the computer. Samsung US Support states: “Messages cannot be viewed on your computer from the backup files, but they can be read once they are transferred to the new phone.”
On Samsung’s inspected US support page, the listed computer requirements are Windows 10 or later or macOS 10.9 or later; Chromebooks are not compatible. Backup locations can vary by operating-system version. Check Samsung’s Smart Switch computer backup guidance for current requirements and locations.

Transfer messages directly to another phone
Smart Switch can move message history from an old phone to a new one. Keep both devices charged and use the connection method supported by your phones.
- Open Smart Switch on both phones.
- On the old phone, choose Send data; on the new phone, choose Receive data.
- Choose a wireless connection or another supported transfer method, then select the source phone type.
- Allow the connection when prompted, select Messages, and start the transfer.
This transfers messages to the receiving phone; it does not make a computer-readable export. See Samsung’s step-by-step message transfer instructions.
Restore messages from an SD card, USB drive, or SSD
Smart Switch can restore message data from supported external storage. An SD card must be supported by both phones. A USB flash drive or SSD connects to the Galaxy phone’s charging port and may require an OTG adapter; match the adapter to the phone’s port and the storage device.

Samsung Australia also documents PC and external-storage backup options, but its instructions apply to Australian products. Check the instructions and compatibility information for your region and specific devices. See Samsung Australia’s Smart Switch backup and restore guidance.
Recover deleted messages
First check whether the message is still in Samsung Messages’ Trash:
- Open Samsung Messages.
- Open More options, then select Trash.
- Select the message and choose Restore.
If it is not in Trash, recovery may depend on an applicable Samsung Cloud, Google, or Smart Switch backup. A deleted message cannot be promised recoverable when there is no matching Trash item or backup. Samsung outlines recovery routes in its Galaxy message support guidance.

What to know about Samsung Messages and Google Messages
Samsung’s US app-status page says Samsung Messages was discontinued in the United States in July 2026 and describes switching to Google Messages. Samsung says existing messages and conversations transfer automatically, with the full transfer taking up to approximately 24 hours depending on the amount of data; this is Samsung’s estimate, not an independently measured average.
Samsung also notes device-specific behavior: older Tizen watches have limited compatibility, and some devices released before 2022 may have temporary RCS interruptions during the app switch while SMS/MMS remain available. The discontinuation information is US-specific; it should not be treated as a universal timetable. Samsung India separately says Samsung Messages is not preinstalled on Galaxy S25 smartphones and describes Smart Switch history transferring to Google Messages. Availability and behavior can vary by software version, model, and market. Check Samsung’s US Messages transition information and, for India, Samsung India’s Samsung Messages support page.
