Git Bash is included with Git for Windows; there is no separate Git Bash download for Windows 11. Download and install Git for Windows, then open Git Bash from the Start menu or a folder’s right-click menu.
The current maintained release is Git for Windows 2.55.0(3), released July 14, 2026. Most Intel- and AMD-based Windows 11 PCs should use the x64 installer.
Choose the correct Git for Windows download
| Windows 11 system | Official download | Typical filename |
|---|---|---|
| Intel or AMD 64-bit PC | Git for Windows/x64 Setup | Git-2.55.0.3-64-bit.exe |
| Windows 11 ARM64 PC | Git for Windows/ARM64 Setup | Git-2.55.0.3-arm64.exe |
| Portable Intel or AMD version | Git for Windows/x64 Portable | PortableGit-2.55.0.3-64-bit.7z.exe |
| Portable ARM64 version | Git for Windows/ARM64 Portable | PortableGit-2.55.0.3-arm64.7z.exe |
For a normal installation, select Git for Windows/x64 Setup. To check your architecture, open Settings > System > About and inspect System type. ARM-based devices should use the ARM64 installer.
Method 1: Download Git Bash from the official website
- Open the official Git for Windows download page.
- Select Git for Windows/x64 Setup for a conventional Intel or AMD Windows 11 computer. Select Git for Windows/ARM64 Setup for a Windows 11 ARM64 device.
- Save the EXE installer, then open it from your Downloads folder.
- If Windows displays a security prompt, select Yes to allow the installer to make changes.
- Continue through the setup wizard. The default choices are suitable for most users.
- When installation finishes, select Finish. Git Bash may open automatically if that option was selected.
The installer is an EXE file, not an MSI package. Git for Windows currently does not provide an official MSI for Group Policy deployment.

Important installer choices
The setup wizard contains several choices that affect how Git works in Windows:
- Default editor: choose the editor you expect to use for Git commit messages, such as Visual Studio Code, Vim, or Notepad.
- PATH setting: the option that allows Git to be used from the command prompt is generally the most practical choice. It lets you run Git from Git Bash, Command Prompt, and PowerShell.
- HTTPS transport: keep the bundled OpenSSL option unless your organization specifically requires Windows Secure Channel.
- Line endings: the default Windows checkout and Unix-style commit setting is suitable for many mixed Windows/Linux projects. Teams with a repository-specific policy should follow that policy instead.
- Terminal emulator: the default mintty terminal provides the usual Git Bash experience.
Method 2: Install Git Bash with WinGet
If Windows 11 has Microsoft’s App Installer component available, you can install Git from Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell.
- Run this command:
winget install --id Git.Git -e --source winget
- Accept any source or elevation prompts shown by WinGet.
- Close and reopen any terminal windows that were already open before installation.
WinGet is supplied through Microsoft’s App Installer. On a new Windows 11 installation, it may not be available until you sign in at least once and Microsoft Store registration finishes. If the command is not recognized, run the following in PowerShell:
Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_8wekyb3d8bbwe
If App Installer is not installed, install it through the Microsoft Store before using WinGet. An elevation prompt can also affect installation: declining a required prompt causes the installation to fail. Running Command Prompt as administrator avoids that prompt for installers that require elevation.

Open Git Bash after installation
Use any of these methods:
- Press the Windows key, type Git Bash, and select the app.
- Right-click an empty area inside a folder in File Explorer and select Open Git Bash here or the corresponding Git Bash entry.
- Open another terminal and type
bashif the Git installation added its commands to PATH.
Git for Windows also includes Git GUI and shell integration. The Explorer context-menu entries make it easy to start Git Bash in the directory where a repository is located.
Verify the installation
In Git Bash, Command Prompt, or PowerShell, run:
git version
A successful installation returns a version string similar to:
git version 2.55.0.windows.1
The exact output can differ from the installer’s display because Git for Windows may use an out-of-band release suffix. For example, 2.55.0(3) identifies a Git-for-Windows-specific third release and is not the same display string as plain 2.55.0.
Useful configuration after installing Git Bash
Set your Git identity
Git uses these values when creating commits:
git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email "you@example.com"
Check the saved configuration with:
git config --global --list
Enable long paths when repositories need them
Git for Windows does not enable long-path handling by default. A repository with deeply nested folders can therefore fail during checkout or another operation because of Windows’ traditional 260-character path limit. Enable the Git setting with:

git config --global core.longpaths true
Prefer Git’s bundled SSH tools when needed
Windows may have its own OpenSSH installation. If Git uses the wrong SSH binaries, prioritize Git for Windows’ bundled tools for the current Command Prompt session:
set PATH=C:Program FilesGitusrbin;%PATH%
In PowerShell, use:
$Env:PATH = "C:Program FilesGitusrbin;$Env:PATH"
If you use Git’s SSH agent from a new Command Prompt session, initialize it first:
start-ssh-agent.cmd
Git Bash limitations and fixes
Git Bash uses the mintty terminal by default. Most Git commands work normally, but some native Windows programs expect a real Windows console. Such programs may display non-ASCII text incorrectly or fail when they need an interactive or full-screen interface.

Update Git for Windows
Installing Git does not necessarily mean that future releases are installed automatically through the original bundle installer. From Git Bash, check for updates with:
git update-git-for-windows
To see the updater’s options, run:
git update-git-for-windows -h
Compatibility notes
- Current Git for Windows releases do not support Windows 7 or Windows 8. Git for Windows 2.46.2 was the last release supporting those systems; support ended with 2.47.0.
- Current standard packages target x64 and ARM64 systems. Full 32-bit support ended with the 2.40.x series. The last regular 32-bit installer, portable package, and archive were in version 2.48.1; current 32-bit availability is limited to MinGit, a minimal package intended mainly for third-party applications.
- Git for Windows requires Windows 11 on ARM64 systems because x86_64 emulation is required. That emulation is not available on earlier Windows versions.
Common download and installation problems
<
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Git Bash” cannot be found on the official site | Download Git for Windows. Git Bash is included with it and is not a separate Windows package. |
winget is not recognized |
Install or register Microsoft App Installer, sign in to the Microsoft Store at least once, then reopen the terminal. The WinGet client can also be missing from PATH. |
| WinGet installation stops at an elevation prompt | Accept the prompt, or run Command Prompt as administrator and repeat the command. |
git is not recognized after installation |
Close and reopen the terminal so it reloads PATH. If it still fails, rerun the Git installer and ensure the command-line PATH option is enabled. |
| Git Bash does not handle a Windows program correctly | Try winpty, run Bash without mintty, or use ConEmu. |
| Repository checkout fails because of long filenames | Run git config --global core.longpaths true, subject to your Windows and organizational policies. |

For almost every Windows 11 PC, download Git for Windows/x64 Setup from the official Git website and keep the installer’s normal defaults. Git Bash will be installed with Git, and git version confirms that it is ready. Use the ARM64 package only on an ARM64 device, and use the portable package when you specifically need a nonstandard, self-contained installation.
