Windows 11 usually does not use a single standalone program called Realtek HD Audio Manager. On a current PC, the setup normally includes two separate parts:

  • A Realtek audio driver installed through Windows Update or supplied by the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  • A Microsoft Store companion app called Realtek Audio Control or Realtek Audio Console.

The app provides controls such as jack detection, speaker configuration, equalization, and audio effects. It cannot replace the driver. If the matching Realtek driver or device extension is missing, the app may refuse to open or report that the device is unsupported.

The safest installation order is: install Windows updates, install the audio driver for the exact PC or motherboard model, restart, and then install the compatible Realtek control app.

Before downloading Realtek software

Do not download a random “Realtek HD Audio Manager for Windows 11” installer from a third-party driver site. Realtek audio packages are often customized for a particular laptop, desktop, motherboard, codec, or audio subsystem. A package can support Windows 11 and still be wrong for your hardware.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Look for the following names on the manufacturer’s support page:

  • Realtek Audio Driver
  • Realtek High Definition Audio Driver
  • Realtek HD Universal Driver
  • Realtek Audio Driver with Nahimic
  • Realtek Codec Console
  • Realtek Audio Console Application

For a laptop, use the laptop manufacturer’s support page. For a custom-built PC, use the motherboard manufacturer’s page. If you use a separate sound card, use the sound-card manufacturer’s driver instead.

Step 1: Install Windows 11 updates

Windows Update is Microsoft’s recommended first source for audio-driver updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates. Check Advanced options > Optional updates as well, because audio drivers can appear there.
  4. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately request a restart.

Test the speakers or headphones after restarting. If the Realtek controls are still missing, continue with the manufacturer’s driver.

Step 2: Download the correct Realtek driver

  1. Identify the exact computer or motherboard model. On a laptop, the model is commonly printed on the underside or shown in Settings > System > About. On a desktop, check the motherboard documentation or the manufacturer’s system-information utility.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s official support website.
  3. Search for the exact model, then open its Drivers, Downloads, or Support section.
  4. Filter the downloads for Windows 11 and locate the audio package.
  5. Download the Realtek driver and any separately listed console or codec application package.

Some manufacturers separate the driver and companion application. ASUS, for example, can list a Realtek Audio Driver separately from a Realtek Codec Console Application. MSI commonly provides a Realtek HD Universal Driver and directs users to install Realtek Audio Console from the Microsoft Store. Dell also publishes product-specific driver and console packages.

Save the downloaded installer somewhere easy to find, such as Downloads. If the file is a ZIP archive, right-click it, select Extract All, and open the extracted folder before running the setup program.

Step 3: Reinstall the Realtek driver with Device Manager

Use this procedure when audio has stopped working, the driver appears corrupted, or the Realtek app says that no compatible device is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the Realtek audio device. Its name may include “Realtek(R) Audio” or a similar model-specific description.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If Windows displays it, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device. Older Windows instructions may call this Delete the driver software for this device.
  6. Select Uninstall.
  7. Save open work, then select Start > Power > Restart.

Windows normally reinstalls an audio driver after the restart. If it does not, run the manufacturer’s downloaded installer manually and restart again.

If the Realtek device is missing

In Device Manager, select View > Show hidden devices, then select Action > Scan for hardware changes. Also check whether the audio device is disabled. If the context menu contains Enable device, select it.

If no audio device appears at all, install the manufacturer’s chipset and audio packages where applicable. A disabled device, missing device extension, firmware setting, or hardware problem can prevent Windows from presenting the Realtek device normally.

Step 4: Install Realtek Audio Control

Install the companion app only after the matching driver is installed.

  1. Open the Realtek Audio Control Microsoft Store listing.
  2. Select Get or Install.
  3. After installation, open Start and search for Realtek Audio Control.

Depending on the hardware and manufacturer, the app may instead be named Realtek Audio Console or Realtek Codec Console. Use the name specified on your PC or motherboard’s support page. Do not assume that every Realtek-branded app supports every Realtek chip.

Repair or reinstall the Realtek companion app

If Windows audio works but the control application will not open, repair the app before removing the driver.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Realtek Audio Control or Realtek Audio Console.
  3. Select the … button beside it.
  4. Select Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. If Repair does not help, select Reset.

Repair attempts to fix the installation without removing its data. Reset removes the app’s stored data and settings. These options are not available for every Windows application.

To remove and install the app again:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select … next to the Realtek app.
  3. Select Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall the app from the Microsoft Store or from the OEM support page.

Fix Microsoft Store installation errors

If the Store listing will not install or the Microsoft Store will not open, reset the Store cache:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK.

A blank Command Prompt window may appear briefly. It should close automatically and then open the Microsoft Store.

Other reasons the Store app may be unavailable include a local-account limitation, Store restrictions applied by a work or school administrator, a damaged Store installation, or an incompatible Realtek driver. On a managed PC, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.

Fix “Realtek Audio Control does not support this device”

This message usually means that the app cannot find the compatible Realtek driver or required device extension. Reinstalling the Store app by itself generally will not fix it.

  1. Uninstall the Realtek device in Device Manager.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Install the audio driver published for the exact computer or motherboard model.
  4. Restart Windows again.
  5. Install the Realtek companion app from the Microsoft Store or the manufacturer’s support page.

Device Manager may say that the best driver is already installed even when the manufacturer provides a more suitable package. Windows’ generic driver database does not always include the OEM extensions required by the console app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows installs “High Definition Audio Device” instead

Windows includes a generic audio driver named High Definition Audio Device. It may restore basic playback, but it can omit Realtek-specific features such as jack detection, equalization, DTS or Dolby components, and OEM audio enhancements.

To select a different installed driver:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
  4. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  5. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  6. Select the desired audio device and choose Next.

For the full Realtek feature set, reinstall the driver from the PC or motherboard manufacturer rather than relying on the generic driver.

Roll back the driver after a Windows update

If sound stopped immediately after a Windows or driver update, rolling back may be faster than reinstalling everything.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the Realtek device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  6. Follow the prompts and restart Windows.

The Roll Back Driver button is unavailable when Windows has not retained a previous driver version.

  2. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and select Restart.
  3. Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  4. Repeat for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) if the option is available.

Also check Device Manager for a warning icon, disabled device, or an “Unknown device.” These clues often point to an incorrect package or a missing device extension rather than a problem with the Store app.

What not to do

Claim What is actually true
There is one universal Realtek HD Audio Manager download. Windows 11 commonly uses a model-specific driver plus a compatible Realtek control app.
The Store app installs the audio driver. The app is a companion interface; the driver normally comes from Windows Update or the OEM.
Any Realtek driver will work. Packages can depend on the exact PC, motherboard, codec, extensions, and licensed audio features.
Device Manager always finds the best driver. The manufacturer may offer a newer or more appropriate driver than Windows Update.
Uninstalling the driver permanently removes audio. Windows normally reinstalls the driver after a restart, or you can install the OEM package manually.

FAQ

Is Realtek HD Audio Manager available as a Windows 11 download?

Not as one universal, supported installer. On current Windows 11 systems, install the Realtek driver for your exact PC or motherboard and then install the compatible Realtek Audio Control, Realtek Audio Console, or OEM-branded companion app.

Where should I download the Realtek audio driver?

Use Windows Update first. If that does not provide the correct package, download it from the official support page for your exact laptop, desktop, motherboard, or sound card model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Realtek Audio Control say my device is unsupported?

The matching Realtek driver or required device extension is probably missing. Remove the Realtek device in Device Manager, restart, install the model-specific OEM driver, restart again, and reinstall the Store app.

Can I reinstall Realtek audio without losing sound permanently?

Yes. After uninstalling the device in Device Manager, restart Windows. Windows normally reinstalls an audio driver automatically. If it does not, run the manufacturer’s audio-driver installer.

Why did Windows install High Definition Audio Device instead of Realtek?

Windows selected its generic audio driver. It may provide basic sound but not Realtek or OEM features. Install the driver published for your exact computer or motherboard model.

What is the Microsoft Store product ID for Realtek Audio Control?

The current Microsoft Store listing uses product ID 9P2B8MCSVPLN. Its direct page is Realtek Audio Control.

The Bottom Line

For Windows 11, reinstall the driver first and the Realtek control app second. Use Start > Settings > Windows Update for the initial check, then obtain the driver from the official support page for the exact PC or motherboard model. After restarting, install the compatible Realtek Audio Control or Audio Console app from the Microsoft Store. If the app reports an unsupported device, reinstalling the app alone is unlikely to help—the driver and its hardware-specific extensions are the important part.
