Meta’s October 21 earnings can influence AI sentiment, but they cannot automatically reverse the market’s rotation. The decisive evidence will be whether artificial-intelligence investment is producing faster revenue and advertising gains than it is adding costs. The October 16 close showed why the question matters: technology-heavy indexes dropped sharply while the Dow held up.

What happened to the major indexes on October 16?

The S&P 500 fell 1.1% to 7,659.44, the Nasdaq Composite lost 2.1% to 26,140.03 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.3% to 52,002.41. The weekly contrast was more striking: the S&P 500 declined 1.9%, the Nasdaq dropped 4.5% and the Dow gained 0.7%.

That divergence indicates concentrated pressure in growth and technology shares rather than an equal-weighted collapse across the market. It does not, by itself, prove that the Dow will rebound or that the Nasdaq’s decline has ended. Index futures traded before the next session should be checked with a live quote, including the timestamp and contract month; a stale overnight percentage can be misleading.

Why technology and semiconductor stocks led the decline

Associated Press coverage identified technology and semiconductor companies as the leading sources of weakness. Meta fell 3.7%, Micron dropped 5.6%, AMD declined 6% and Intel lost 5.8% on October 16.

The selling reflected two connected concerns. Investors are questioning how durable the enormous spending required for AI infrastructure will be, and whether companies can finance that build-out without sacrificing margins or shareholder returns. Reuters reported that stumbles in the AI trade were testing confidence ahead of major technology earnings. LSEG IBES expected third-quarter S&P 500 earnings to increase by more than 30%, so the market is demanding more than a headline earnings beat: it wants proof that profits can justify the investment cycle.

When Meta reports and what its latest quarter showed

Meta plans to release third-quarter 2026 results after the market close on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The company’s investor-relations schedule lists the conference call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time, or 1:30 p.m. Pacific time.

  • Revenue was $60.801 billion, up 28% year over year.
  • Average Family daily active people reached 3.60 billion in June 2026, up 3% year over year.
  • Ad impressions increased 14% year over year.
  • Average ad price increased 12% year over year.
  • Meta guided 2026 capital expenditures to $130 billion to $145 billion.

That combination shows a fast-growing advertising business, but also an unusually large commitment to data centers, computing and other infrastructure. Mark Zuckerberg said, “AI is accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities.” The earnings release and call must show how those opportunities translate into measurable financial returns.

The four tests that will decide the market reaction

Test Second-quarter baseline What investors need from Q3 Potential market reading
Revenue and ad monetization $60.801 billion revenue; ad impressions up 14%; average ad price up 12% year over year Continued growth, with management explaining whether AI improves targeting, ranking or advertiser demand Stronger monetization can support Meta and broader AI sentiment
User engagement 3.60 billion average Family daily active people, up 3% year over year Evidence that AI features increase time spent, content quality or commercial activity without damaging user experience Healthy engagement makes future AI revenue more credible
Capital expenditure and margins 2026 capital-expenditure guidance of $130–145 billion Spending discipline, updated investment timing and a clear explanation of margin effects A higher-cost outlook could overwhelm an earnings beat
Incremental AI revenue Management says AI is already accelerating the core business and opening enterprise opportunities Specific evidence that AI-generated or AI-enhanced products create revenue beyond the existing advertising base Visible returns could stabilize the group; vague promises would leave the valuation debate unresolved

Three ways Meta’s report could affect AI stocks

Positive reaction: growth with spending control

The most supportive outcome would combine solid revenue and engagement growth with capital-expenditure guidance that remains credible and manageable. If management shows that AI is lifting ad performance or creating new paid products faster than infrastructure costs are rising, investors may treat the October weakness as a rotation or reset rather than the end of the AI cycle.

Mixed reaction: a beat, but heavier spending

Meta could exceed earnings expectations and still fail to lift the group. Sharply higher spending, weaker margins or cautious comments about the timing of AI monetization would make the headline beat less important. In that case, the market could continue favoring less technology-sensitive shares, including the relatively stronger Dow components.

Negative reaction: weaker outlook or limited payoff

A miss, reduced outlook or admission that AI costs are arriving before meaningful revenue would strengthen the argument that the recent sell-off is more than a temporary pullback. Semiconductor and other infrastructure shares could remain under pressure because their valuations depend heavily on continued customer spending.

How to interpret futures and “broken support” before the next session

Futures indicate how markets are positioned before regular trading, not where indexes must open or close. Compare the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures at the same timestamp, record each contract month, and check whether moves persist as cash-market trading approaches. Also look for changes in Treasury yields, semiconductor leaders and large technology shares, since those groups helped drive the October 16 decline.

The available October 16 results establish the closing levels and the direction of the sell-off, but they do not establish a newly verified numerical support level for the S&P 500 or Nasdaq. Chart support should therefore be taken from a current, clearly timestamped chart immediately before publication. A futures rebound without improvement in technology breadth would be a limited signal; a rebound accompanied by stronger semiconductor and megacap participation would be more convincing.

What would count as an AI rescue?

Meta does not need to deliver a perfect quarter to improve sentiment. It needs to demonstrate that AI investment is becoming a monetization engine rather than only a cost center. The strongest signal would be durable advertising gains, steady user engagement, concrete new AI revenue and a capital-spending plan that protects margins. Without that combination, even strong operating growth may not stop the rotation away from expensive technology shares.
