If you mean markers that draw two colors in a single stroke, Crayola Signature Metallic Outline Paint Markers are a manufacturer-documented example: Crayola says their ink separates on paper to create a colorful outline effect. They are different from dual-ended markers, which keep their colors on separate tips. There is no independent comparative testing here to establish an overall “best.”

The phrase can describe two different marker designs. Self-outlining markers create a two-color effect in one stroke as the ink separates on the page. Dual-ended markers instead offer different colors or tip styles at opposite ends; they do not create the same effect from one stroke.

Choose a self-outlining design if your goal is a two-color decorative stroke for lettering, journaling, or art projects. Choose a dual-ended marker only if you want two separate colors or tip styles available in one marker. What paper works best, and do they work on dark paper?
For Crayola’s Signature Metallic Outline Paint Markers, Crayola recommends heavy-weight paper and warns that ink may bleed through some paper. The product page does not specify a numeric paper weight or guarantee that a particular sheet will prevent bleed-through. Test on the paper you plan to use and put a protective sheet underneath your work.
Crayola says its markers work on both light and dark surfaces, but notes that the outline effect varies on dark surfaces. Try a sample stroke on the intended surface before lettering or filling a finished design. The cited Shuttle Art description does not provide comparable surface guidance.

How to prepare and store Crayola’s paint markers
- Shake the marker with its cap on.
- On scrap paper, pump the tip until ink begins to flow.
- Recap the marker immediately after use.
- Store it horizontally or tip up. If it needs priming after storage, repeat the preparation steps.
