Secondary glazing can be a strong choice for reducing street noise because it creates a separate inner window and can leave a much wider air gap than the cavity inside ordinary double glazing. But the labels alone do not predict the result: glass, gap, frame, seals and installation all matter. Compare evidence for the complete proposed window, not just the glass or a headline rating.

What is the difference?

Double glazing usually means two panes assembled into one sealed unit, typically with a relatively narrow cavity between them. Secondary glazing adds a separate window on the room side of an existing window. The original and the new inner window then act as two distinct barriers, with a larger space between them. That difference in construction can matter acoustically, but neither term is a sound-performance rating.

Factor Double glazing Secondary glazing Why it matters
Construction Two panes in one sealed unit, generally with a narrow cavity. A separate inner window behind the existing window, leaving a larger cavity. A wider space can improve separation, but the actual assembly determines performance. BS 8233:2014 and the Greater London Authority guidance discuss cavity and system design.
Existing window Often involves replacing the existing window or installing a new double-glazed window system. Can retain an existing primary window and add a second unit inside. Suitability depends on the window’s condition, opening geometry, conservation restrictions and installation details.
Acoustic specification Pane thickness, pane asymmetry, laminated glass, cavity, frame and seals all affect the result. The inner pane, cavity, frame, seals and primary window contribute to the assembled system. Ask for evidence that covers the complete proposed window rather than relying on a glass-only claim. A 2022 planning assessment specifies complete configurations.
Air space The sealed-unit cavity is much smaller than the space that may be available between separate windows. BS 8233:2014 says at least 100 mm, with about 300 mm desirable for good performance over the main frequency range of interest. These are design references, not a guaranteed noise reduction for every property. BS 8233:2014
Evidence to compare Look for ratings and spectrum terms that apply to the whole window. Look for the same, and verify that the evidence covers both the primary and secondary windows together. For traffic, a rating with Ctr may be relevant; one weighted figure may not describe performance at every frequency. The 2022 assessment reports specified systems and metrics.

The practical choice is often whether to replace an existing window with a new system or retain it and add an inner window. A site-specific assessment matters: a theoretically attractive arrangement is not useful if the window cannot be fitted or sealed as intended.

Does secondary glazing reduce street noise better?

It can, particularly when the alternative is ordinary thermal double glazing with a narrow sealed-unit cavity. That is not a universal ranking. Different pane thicknesses, laminated glass, cavity dimensions, frame designs and sealing can alter the comparison, and the noise itself is not one uniform frequency. There is no controlled, universal head-to-head result establishing a fixed decibel advantage for secondary glazing over double glazing under matched conditions.

BS 8233:2014 cautions that “A double-glazed unit is unlikely to perform better than a single pane of mass equivalent to the thicker pane of the sealed unit, and should be used in a frame with good seals to realize its full insulating potential.” This is a warning against assuming that adding a second pane in a standard sealed unit automatically creates a strong acoustic upgrade; it is not proof that every double-glazed window performs poorly. The standard’s advice concerns the unit and its frame, while the real outcome also depends on installation and other sound paths through the building envelope. BS 8233:2014, section 8.4.5.2

A large gap between distinct windows is one reason secondary glazing may be specified for noise control. The standard recommends a secondary-window air space of at least 100 mm and says about 300 mm is desirable for good performance over the main frequency range of interest. A Greater London Authority planning document gives 50–150 mm as a range used for acoustic aims. These recommendations differ in context; neither should be treated as a universal minimum, maximum or promise of a particular dB reduction. The space that can actually be built, the panes and the whole assembly still need to be considered. BS 8233:2014; Greater London Authority, November 2015

How to read the dB evidence

Ask what a quoted sound reduction number actually describes. A rating may refer to a defined system and a particular test or calculation method, not to every window made with the same type of glass. Check whether the rating belongs to the glass alone or the complete window, including frame and design features. A planning assessment can be useful evidence for the assembly it names, but it does not establish what another home will achieve.

  • Rw: A weighted sound-reduction rating used in the cited assessments. It is one summary measure, not a direct promise of how quiet a particular room will feel.
  • Rw + Ctr: A spectrum adaptation term included in some acoustic reporting and relevant to checking traffic-noise performance. Do not treat it as interchangeable with Rw, or compare one system’s Rw with another system’s Rw + Ctr as if they were the same figure.
  • Frequency-band data: If traffic noise is especially low-frequency, request the frequency-specific evidence rather than relying only on a single weighted rating. The material available here does not establish a universal conversion from a rating to perceived loudness.

For a meaningful comparison, request equivalent evidence for the two complete proposed arrangements: the replacement double-glazed window and the existing-plus-secondary assembly. Confirm that the stated pane thicknesses, cavity, frames, seals and opening details match what will be installed. If the supplier provides only a glass-product rating, ask for the window-system evidence or an evidence-based calculation for the actual design. What published system examples do—and do not—show

The figures below illustrate why configuration and context must accompany a rating. They are examples from planning assessments, not typical product guarantees or the result of a controlled head-to-head test.

Assessment and specified system Reported figure How to use it
Hillcrest NW Ltd. planning noise assessment dated 18 November 2022: 4 mm existing glass, 200 mm air cavity, 8 mm secondary pane. Rw 50 dB. A rating for that specified secondary-glazing configuration in that project assessment; it is not a typical outcome or a guarantee for another property. Assessment
Hillcrest NW Ltd. planning noise assessment dated 18 November 2022: 6 mm glass, 16 mm air cavity, 4 mm glass. Rw 21 dB. A rating for that specified double-glazing configuration. The assessment also gives a separate Rw + Ctr figure; that is a different metric and should not be conflated with Rw. Assessment
Planning assessment titled “BS 8233 internal noise assessment – road traffic,” dated 4 August 2025: typical thermal double glazing, as described in that assessment. Approximately 31 dB Rw. This is an approximate figure stated in that assessment, not a universal current rating for thermal double glazing. Assessment

The 50 dB and 21 dB figures above do not establish that one glazing type will outperform the other by a fixed amount: they describe different specified configurations in a project document, not matched systems tested under controlled equivalent conditions. Likewise, the approximate 31 dB figure is an assessment’s characterization, not a replacement for a rating tied to the exact window under consideration.

Which glass options should you ask about?

Acoustic laminated glass is available for single, double and triple configurations. Its inclusion is a design option, not a substitute for checking the performance of the installed window. Saint-Gobain says STADIP SILENCE can be used as monolithic glass or integrated into double or triple units. Pilkington describes Optiphon as laminated glass with a special PVB interlayer and configurations for project-specific sound reduction. Treat manufacturer information as product-level guidance; ask how the proposed glass, frame and cavity together are rated for the specific window design. Do not choose by glass thickness or product name alone. A laminated pane may be part of a single, double or triple arrangement, and those arrangements do not automatically have the same system performance. Ask the installer or designer to identify the exact pane build-up and provide relevant evidence for the whole proposed assembly.

How to choose for your existing home

  1. Define the job. Identify the noise source that matters—such as road traffic—and whether you are improving a current window or planning a full replacement. Note if the problem is particularly dominated by low-frequency traffic sound, since a single weighted number may not capture that detail.
  2. Assess the current window and opening. Have the existing window’s condition, seals, opening geometry and available room for a second unit considered. If conservation restrictions apply, include them before settling on replacement or an added inner window.
  3. Set a feasible cavity target. For secondary glazing, use the 100 mm minimum and approximately 300 mm desirable guidance in BS 8233:2014 as a design reference, not a guaranteed acoustic result. A 50–150 mm range appears in a 2015 Greater London Authority planning document for acoustic aims; it reflects different context, not a rule that supersedes the standard in every project.
  4. Request the complete specification. Get pane types and thicknesses, cavity dimensions, frame and sealing details, and a clear statement of whether the quoted rating is for glass only or the whole proposed window. For secondary glazing, confirm that the evidence covers the primary and added inner windows as an assembly.
  5. Compare like with like. Ask for equivalent whole-window evidence for each option and note the rating method and metric. For road noise, check whether the report includes Rw + Ctr; for especially low-frequency noise, request frequency-band data where available.
  6. Get a site-specific proposal. Ask the installer to explain how the design fits the actual opening and what assumptions underlie the rating. Local building requirements, availability and conservation constraints vary; obtain current local quotes rather than assuming one system is always less costly.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote

A quote is easier to evaluate when it identifies the proposed assembly rather than relying on a phrase such as “acoustic glass” or “soundproof window.” Ask the supplier to put the following details in writing:

  • What are the pane types and thicknesses, and what is the cavity width? For an inner window, is the quoted gap the actual separation between the existing and new panes?
  • Does the acoustic figure apply to the glass, a laboratory-tested window, or the complete proposed primary-plus-secondary system? If it is calculated rather than tested, what construction and assumptions does the calculation cover?
  • Which metric is being quoted, and is there a traffic-relevant Rw + Ctr figure or frequency-band information for any particularly low-frequency concern?
  • How will the frames and opening edges be sealed, and what happens if the existing window or its frame is not sufficiently sound or airtight?
  • Does the design fit the opening and any conservation or local building requirements, and what elements of the proposal could change after a site survey?

These questions do not guarantee a particular in-room result; they help establish whether competing proposals describe comparable systems. A confident product claim without the build-up, test scope or installation details is not enough to rank two quotes.

Why the whole façade and seals matter

Noise can reach a room through the glazing and through other routes in the façade. A better glass specification cannot make up for a leaky frame, a poor seal or another weak path. BS 8233:2014 specifically says a double-glazed unit should be in a well-sealed frame to realize its full insulating potential, and a planning specification treats performance as belonging to the complete window, with frame and design features included. BS 8233:2014; Hillcrest NW Ltd. planning assessment

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why a generic weather strip should not be presented as a soundproofing solution. Addressing a minor air leak may be relevant for a suitable frame, but the correct fix depends on the window and does not replace a properly designed and fitted glazing assembly. Ask a qualified installer to identify the leak and specify an appropriate repair rather than assuming an adhesive strip will solve street noise.

Common mistakes when comparing quotes

  • Comparing labels instead of systems: “double” and “secondary” do not specify pane build-up, gap, frame or seal quality.
  • Taking a glass claim as a window rating: Verify whether the evidence covers the glass alone or the installed assembly.
  • Reading every dB value as equivalent: Keep Rw distinct from Rw + Ctr, and check that the evidence uses comparable metrics and methods.
  • Treating a project value as a promise: The 2022 planning examples apply to their named configurations; they do not predict a universal result in a different opening.
  • Ignoring the available space and constraints: Cavity guidance does not override the actual geometry, condition or conservation requirements at the property.
  • Focusing only on the glass: The frame, seals, installation and other façade sound paths can affect the result.

Bottom line

For street noise, secondary glazing deserves serious consideration when a large space can be created between a sound existing window and a well-sealed inner unit. Ordinary thermal double glazing is not automatically an acoustic upgrade simply because it has two panes. The reliable way to decide is to compare site-appropriate, equivalent evidence for the complete systems—including traffic-relevant metrics and, where needed, frequency-band data—and to check that the installation can match the stated design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does secondary glazing reduce street noise better than double glazing?

It can be a strong option, especially when it creates a much wider cavity than an ordinary sealed double-glazed unit. But there is no universal head-to-head decibel advantage: the panes, cavity, frame, seals, installation and noise frequencies all affect results. Compare evidence for the complete proposed assemblies.

How big should the gap be between secondary glazing and the existing window?

BS 8233:2014 gives at least 100 mm as guidance and says about 300 mm is desirable for good performance over the main frequency range of interest. A Greater London Authority planning document gives 50–150 mm for acoustic aims. These are context-specific design references, not a guarantee or universal rule; available space and the complete window design matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will ordinary double glazing soundproof my room?

No glazing label guarantees a soundproof room. BS 8233:2014 notes that a double-glazed unit is unlikely to outperform a single pane with mass equivalent to its thicker pane unless the system is appropriately designed, and emphasizes good frame seals. Noise can also pass through other parts of the façade.

What acoustic rating should I ask for with road noise?

Ask for whole-window evidence and clarify whether the figure covers the glass alone or the complete assembly. Check the metric and whether Rw + Ctr is reported for traffic; if the noise is especially low-frequency, ask for frequency-band data. A single weighted rating does not predict perceived loudness in every room.

Is acoustic laminated glass enough on its own?

No. Acoustic laminated products such as Saint-Gobain STADIP SILENCE and Pilkington Optiphon are design options that can be used in different glazing configurations. The product name does not establish installed-window performance; ask for evidence covering the proposed glass, frame, cavity and seals together.

How much does secondary glazing cost compared with replacement double glazing?

The cited material does not establish current installation prices or a reliable cost comparison. Costs depend on the property and the specified system, so obtain current local quotes for both options after a site-specific assessment. Compare what each quote includes as well as its price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Secondary glazing may be the stronger acoustic option when its separate inner window allows a wide, well-sealed cavity, but no label or isolated dB figure settles the choice. Compare equivalent evidence for each complete proposed window and get a site-specific quote.
