For double doors, the right deadbolt depends on the whole door assembly—not just the lock. Identify the active leaf, check how the inactive leaf is secured, and verify the door’s preparation and manufacturer instructions before choosing hardware. A deadbolt can secure the active leaf, but it cannot compensate for an incompatible strike, an unsecured second leaf, or an unsuitable installation.
How double-door locks work
Double doors have two leaves. The active leaf is the one used for ordinary entry; the inactive leaf is typically held in place separately. The lock arrangement must suit that configuration. A setup may include a deadbolt on the active leaf, flush or slide bolts on the inactive leaf, and an astragal or another meeting-stile component where the leaves come together. Exact arrangements vary by door system. Reeb’s overview of multipoint locksets and Allegion’s explanation of astragals describe components used in different configurations.
How to choose door locks for French doors
French doors are one type of double door, but not every double-door system has the same construction or hardware. Before comparing locks, establish what is installed and what the door can accept.

- Document the existing preparation. Check the door thickness, lock bore and edge preparation, backset, handing, and strike location. Record how the deadbolt engages the strike or meeting stile.
- Check the door manufacturer’s instructions. Use the instructions for the specific door system to confirm compatible lock types and any installation requirements.
- Compare compatible options. For a conventional deadbolt, check preparation and strike alignment, cylinder function, finish, keying needs, and the lock’s installation instructions. For a door with a multipoint mechanism, look for compatible system parts and manufacturer support rather than assuming a standard deadbolt will substitute.
- Confirm the inactive-leaf hardware. Check that its bolts or other retaining hardware work with the meeting stile and the overall lock arrangement.
Schlage’s guidance on locks for French doors says a single-cylinder mechanical deadbolt can be used where the door supports it. That is not a guarantee that a standard deadbolt—or a smart lock—will fit every double door.

When a multipoint lock may be an option
A multipoint lock engages the door at several points. It is a distinct system, not simply a conventional deadbolt with extra bolts. Reeb notes that multipoint locks involve additional door and frame preparation, so compatibility and installation requirements matter. Check the specific door and system documentation before selecting replacement parts.
Some multipoint products have approvals tied to a named system and particular installation conditions. For example, the Florida Building Commission approval for the Securitech Trident TEL-IAL is specific to that product and its stated conditions; it does not establish that other systems or installations share the approval.

What hardware does the inactive French door leaf need?
In many configurations, the inactive leaf is secured with top and bottom flush bolts or slide bolts. An astragal or other meeting-stile component may cover or join the gap between the leaves. These parts need to match the particular door, its swing, and the way the active-leaf lock meets the assembly.

Single-cylinder or double-cylinder deadbolt?
A single-cylinder deadbolt uses a key on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside. A double-cylinder deadbolt requires a key on both sides. Although a double-cylinder lock may be considered for a door with glass, it creates an egress tradeoff because someone inside may need a key to unlock the door. Schlage discusses both options for French doors, while the City of Alexandria’s older French-door handout flags the emergency-exit concern. The handout is not current code guidance. Check the rules that apply where you live and consider how occupants would exit in an emergency before choosing a keyed-inside lock.

The cited material explains hardware types, preparation, and a product-specific approval; it does not provide comparable forced-entry test results for conventional deadbolts, multipoint systems, or different astragals. There is therefore no evidence here for a universal “best” double-door deadbolt or a claim that one configuration makes every double door secure. Choose hardware that fits the door and follow the door and lock manufacturers’ instructions.
