A door lock-and-deadbolt combo can be a practical choice when you want a keyed entry knob and a separate deadbolt in one coordinated set. Compare the knob’s and deadbolt’s certifications individually, then confirm that the hardware matches your door’s thickness, backset, and bore-hole layout. A high grade is useful evidence about tested qualities, not a guarantee against every break-in method.
What should you look for in a door lock and deadbolt combo?
Start with the two components, not the package as a whole. The knob handles the latch; the deadbolt is a separate locking point. Check each component’s certification, then verify fit, operation, warranty, and exactly what the listing includes. The cited Schlage combo is one model-specific example, not an independent ranking of available locks.
- Separate ratings: Look for the deadbolt’s certification and the knob’s certification. A set can list different standards for each component.
- Door fit: Confirm door thickness, backset, bore-hole count and spacing, and any trim or handing requirements against the exact model’s specifications.
- Operation: A conventional single-cylinder deadbolt uses a key outside and a thumbturn inside. Consider whether your household needs that arrangement or model-specific keypad or connected access features.
- Warranty and contents: Read the current warranty terms and check the product listing for the exact hardware and accessories included.
For its Single Cylinder Deadbolt and Siena Knob Keyed Entry Lock, Schlage describes a keyed entry knob paired with a single-cylinder deadbolt for a door prepared with two bore holes. The exterior uses a key; the interior uses a thumbturn. See the manufacturer’s product specifications.

What does a BHMA AAA rating mean?
Schlage describes the BHMA residential grading scale as an assessment of security, durability, and finish. On its plain-language scale, C means good, B means better, and A means best; AAA denotes the top grade in all three categories. Read the grade by category and by component rather than treating “AAA” as a blanket promise about a complete door or every product in a manufacturer’s range. Schlage explains the residential grades and functions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The manufacturer’s examples illustrate what those categories cover: security testing can include resistance to sledgehammer attacks, manual pulling, and weight applied to a lever; durability can include repeated operation and continued function as seasonal changes affect door fit; finish evaluation can consider salt, humidity, UV exposure, and scratching. These are examples of evaluation criteria, not a guarantee that a lock resists every attack or installation weakness.
For the cited Siena combo configuration, Schlage lists ANSI/BHMA A156.39-2015 Grade AAA in security, durability, and finish for the knob, and ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2015 Grade AAA in those categories for the deadbolt. Those are the page’s published claims for that configuration; verify the current certification for the exact model you are considering.

Will a new deadbolt fit your door?
Measure before ordering. Door thickness is the thickness of the door itself. Backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore hole for the lock. Also check whether the door has the required holes for both the knob and deadbolt and whether the trim configuration will work with its preparation.
Recommended Free Tools
- Measure door thickness. Compare it with the exact product’s published range.
- Measure backset. Check the distance from the edge to the center of the lock bore, and confirm the lock supports that measurement.
- Inspect the bore-hole layout. A knob-and-deadbolt combo such as the cited Siena set is described for a door with two bore holes. Confirm the holes are present and correctly positioned.
- Check the rest of the installation details. Verify trim, handing, and any other model-specific requirements in the product specifications. If the existing preparation differs, the cited set may require door alteration or may not be suitable.
The cited Siena combo lists a door-thickness range of 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches and an adjustable backset of 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. Do not assume those dimensions apply to other models. For comparison, Schlage’s separate B60 deadbolt page lists a thickness range of 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inches, the same two backset options, and an integrated strike reinforcer with 3-inch screws. The different thickness ranges show why the exact model matters. See the B60 specifications.

Should you choose a smart lock or a traditional deadbolt?
A traditional keyed deadbolt suits households that want straightforward key-and-thumbturn operation. A smart deadbolt may add app-based access management, lock-status checks, or smart-home integrations, but the available functions depend on the specific model and its connectivity, app, hub, power, and supported integrations. Neither category is established here as categorically more secure; choose according to the access features and operating dependencies you actually need.
For example, Schlage describes its Connect deadbolt as using Z-Wave Plus S2 and supporting lock-status checks through Alexa. Those features are specific to the cited model and should not be assumed for every connected lock. Check the Connect product page and the manufacturer’s comparison of smart locks and traditional deadbolts for the details relevant to a particular model.

Schlage’s smart-lock page publishes family-level rating claims: it says Encode and Arrive have AAA ratings, while Sense Pro and Connect have BAA ratings. These are manufacturer statements about product families, not a substitute for checking the certification and functions of the exact model. See Schlage’s smart-lock information.

How to make a sound purchase decision
- Decide on the arrangement. Choose a coordinated knob-and-deadbolt set if your door has two compatible bore holes and you want keyed entry at the knob; consider a deadbolt alone if you only need to replace that component.
- Compare ratings component by component. Record the knob’s and deadbolt’s grade and standard separately, and verify them for the exact model.
- Match the measurements. Confirm thickness, backset, and bore-hole layout before buying.
- Choose mechanical or connected operation. For smart features, confirm the required app, hub or protocol, power arrangements, and integrations for the exact lock.
- Review the purchase details. Confirm current warranty language, finish, included hardware, and availability on the seller’s listing.
