Choose Bobby Prince’s DOOM (1993) score for the original game’s identity, Mick Gordon’s DOOM (2016) album for a longer modern industrial-metal listen, or Andrew Hulshult’s IDKFA when you want remastered music from both classic games while playing the enhanced release. These are related but different listening experiences, so identify the composer and game year before you press play.
The clearest album comparison is between Prince’s 1993 music and Gordon’s 2016 soundtrack. The enhanced DOOM + DOOM II release adds two in-game alternatives—the original MIDI tracks and Hulshult’s remaster—but those are game features rather than evidence of another standalone album.
The releases at a glance
| Release | What it is | Best for | Documented format and length |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOOM (1993), Bobby Prince | The official digital album of the original game score | Listeners who want the classic game’s metal-inflected, blues-rooted writing | Apple Music lists 23 songs and 56 minutes; dated May 8, 2026 |
| Classic MIDI in DOOM + DOOM II | The original games’ music as an in-game playback option | Players who want the familiar tunes during a playthrough | Available by toggling to classic MIDI in Bethesda’s enhanced combined release; not a documented standalone album |
| IDKFA, Andrew Hulshult | A remastered, arranged soundtrack included in the enhanced release | Players who want updated arrangements covering both original games | Bethesda describes a complete track list spanning DOOM (1993) and DOOM II; runtime and standalone physical format are not stated |
| DOOM (2016), Mick Gordon | The official modern game soundtrack album | Listeners seeking industrial-metal energy and a much longer album | Apple Music lists 31 songs and 2 hours 8 minutes; dated September 28, 2016 |
The figures in the table are catalog listings, not measurements of every version circulating on streaming services. Availability can vary by territory and platform.
Which release should you listen to?
Pick Bobby Prince for the classic DOOM identity
Prince’s score is the right starting point if your reference point is the 1993 game, its MIDI-era sound, or the compact loop-driven music heard while exploring the original maps. The Library of Congress essay by Dan Spencer characterizes the writing as metal built on blues-derived harmonic patterns. Spencer discusses riffs, layered progressions, and arrangements that accumulate additional layers as they move forward. That combination gives the music a recognizable attack without making it a copy of a contemporary commercial-metal record.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The music was custom-composed for the game rather than licensed from existing popular songs. That matters when you want to understand why the score feels so tightly matched to the game’s pacing: its riffs and repeated structures were designed to support combat, exploration, and looping gameplay. The official digital listing places the complete album at 23 songs and 56 minutes, making it a focused listen rather than an extended background set.
Pick Mick Gordon for a modern, long-form album
Gordon’s DOOM (2016) soundtrack is not a remaster of Prince’s music and does not attempt to reproduce the original MIDI arrangements. It is a new score for a different game, built around the 2016 reboot’s heavier production aesthetic. Apple Music’s editorial description emphasizes heavy-metal guitar riffs, pounding drums, and industrial synths. Treat that wording as catalog description rather than an independent critical verdict, but it accurately identifies the design brief: dense guitar, forceful percussion, and electronic texture.
Its digital listing is substantially longer than Prince’s: 31 songs totaling 2 hours 8 minutes, with a September 28, 2016 release date. That makes it the practical choice for a long commute, workout, or work session when you want a continuous modern-metal playlist rather than a short set of classic game loops. The extended running time does not make it “more authentic”; it simply serves a different game and listening goal.

Pick IDKFA when you want both classic games rearranged
IDKFA occupies a different category. Bethesda describes it as a remaster with a complete track list spanning both DOOM (1993) and DOOM II, available inside the enhanced DOOM + DOOM II release. It is therefore useful when you want the familiar compositions with updated arrangements while you play, but it should not be described as a separate album unless an authorized standalone edition is specifically identified.
The same enhanced release lets you switch back to the classic MIDI tunes. This gives players a direct, reversible choice: original in-game playback for historical character, or Hulshult’s arranged version for a refreshed presentation. Bethesda’s notes establish the toggle and the two-game scope; they do not establish a runtime, a separate digital album listing, or a physical record for IDKFA.
What the original score sounds like
Metal surface, blues-derived harmony
Spencer’s Library of Congress essay is the most useful source for describing Prince’s musical construction. It identifies a metal surface underpinned by blues harmony, then points to riffs and layered progressions that develop as tracks proceed. In practical listening terms, expect concise motifs, repeated figures that remain effective across gameplay loops, and arrangements that can gain intensity without requiring a conventional verse-chorus pop structure.

Designed for gameplay rather than a licensed-song playlist
Because Prince composed the tracks specifically for the game, their repetition is functional. A level may require a piece to continue while you search rooms, fight, backtrack, or pause. The music’s modular feel is part of that design, not evidence that the album is unfinished. Listening outside the game reveals the writing more clearly, while playing with the classic MIDI option preserves the original relationship between sound and level design.
How the 2016 score differs
A new score, not the original soundtrack in higher quality
The 2016 album should be treated as an independent composition set. Its guitar-and-synth palette, longer catalog, and modern production target the reboot’s presentation. If you are asking whether the 2016 soundtrack is “the same” as the original, the answer is no: the composers, game year, arrangements, and catalog are different. The shared name refers to the franchise, not to identical recordings.
Longer album, different listening rhythm
Gordon’s listed two-hour-plus duration supports uninterrupted listening, while Prince’s sub-hour listing is easier to replay in full. Neither length indicates quality or completeness across the franchise. Use the shorter album when you want a concentrated historical snapshot; use the longer one when you want sustained contemporary intensity.

Classic MIDI or IDKFA while you play?
- Install or launch the enhanced DOOM + DOOM II release. The documented options are part of this combined game release, not a separate music player.
- Open the game’s music or gameplay settings. Bethesda’s release notes state that players can toggle between the classic MIDI tunes and the remastered soundtrack.
- Select classic MIDI if you want the original game versions of the music during play.
- Select IDKFA if you want Andrew Hulshult’s updated arrangements spanning both original games.
- Switch between them on a representative level. This is the most direct way to decide whether historical timbre or a refreshed arrangement better fits your current playthrough; the setting does not turn either option into a standalone album.
The choice is reversible, so you do not need to commit to one soundtrack for the entire game. If you are making an external playlist, use the composer and game year in the playlist title to avoid confusing Prince, Hulshult, and Gordon.

The documented vinyl is the 2016 soundtrack
Bethesda’s official Gear Store lists a deluxe double-vinyl edition of Mick Gordon’s DOOM (2016) soundtrack and specifies 20 tracks. That is a physical collectible for the 2016 score, not a pressing of Prince’s 1993 music. Apple Music’s digital listing for Gordon’s album has 31 songs and 2 hours 8 minutes; the cited listings do not explain the difference between 20 vinyl tracks and 31 digital songs. Do not assume that the vinyl is complete or that both editions have identical track selections.

Do not confuse a game collection with a soundtrack
Bethesda’s DOOM Anthology is a physical game collection. Its listed contents include DOOM (1993), DOOM II, DOOM 64, DOOM 3, DOOM (2016), and DOOM Eternal Deluxe Edition, along with a SteelBook and BFG replica. It is relevant if you are buying a boxed game collection, but it is not an album and should not be counted as a soundtrack release.
Why the original score has historical significance
The Library of Congress essay states that on May 14, 2026, the original score became the third video-game recording selected for the National Recording Registry. That places Prince’s music in a broader cultural-history context beyond its role in a 1993 PC game. Spencer is identified as a music teacher, music-book author, and video-game music composer, and the essay notes that its views are the author’s and may not represent the Library of Congress as an institution.
This recognition does not turn the 1993 album into the same kind of recording as Gordon’s 2016 release. It does explain why listeners interested in game-music history may prefer to begin with Prince, even if their everyday listening habits favor Gordon’s heavier modern production.

- You want the sound associated with the original game: choose Bobby Prince’s DOOM (1993) album or select classic MIDI in the enhanced game.
- You want a modern industrial-metal album for extended listening: choose Mick Gordon’s DOOM (2016) digital release.
- You want updated arrangements of music from both classic games while playing: choose Andrew Hulshult’s IDKFA option in DOOM + DOOM II.
- You want a physical music collectible: look specifically for the documented Mick Gordon double vinyl and verify the current edition, stock, and track list before buying.
- You are building a catalog or playlist: label every entry with composer and game year, because “DOOM soundtrack” can refer to at least these three materially different releases.
