Yes, Doom can be computed through a DNS database. A project built on stock BIND uses DNS lookups as a huge table of precomputed answers and DNS UPDATE messages to change state. It reproduces a verified Doom checkpoint, including every pixel and register, but it is a computation demonstration rather than a game you can play at normal speed.

What “Doom on DNS” actually means

The demonstration reported by PC Gamer on October 14, 2026, compiles Doom for a 32-bit machine whose arithmetic and memory are represented through DNS operations. The implementation is described by its project as “Doom computed through DNS: stock BIND as a RISC-V computer.”

That wording can be misleading if it suggests that a DNS server has become a conventional processor. The external client performs the instruction clocking and wiring. BIND answers lookups and accepts state changes; it does not fetch and execute machine instructions in the way a CPU does.

Project creator Corey Quinn put the distinction plainly: “I want to be very clear here: this isn’t DNS pretending to be a CPU.” Instruction decoding is performed ahead of time by a compiler. At run time, BIND sees key-value reads, conditional writes and a very large collection of precomputed answers. Quinn’s description is that DNS is “simply a very good database,” and that this is enough to carry out the demonstration.

How the database performs computation

Precomputed truth tables replace arithmetic hardware

The database contains about 6.4 million rows of truth tables. Instead of asking BIND to add numbers, shift bits or decode an instruction itself, the client turns an operation into a lookup key. The corresponding DNS record supplies the result that was calculated in advance.

This is why the system resembles a lookup-oriented librarian more than a processor. The hard work of deciding what each instruction means has already been done by the compiler and the generated tables. DNS supplies answers for the cases the program asks about.

DNS records hold changing state

A read-only database would not be enough for a game. Variables, registers and game state must change as the program advances. The implementation uses DNS UPDATE, specified by RFC 2136, to write new values. Authoritative DNS traffic carries TXT-record queries for reads, while UPDATE messages modify the state used by later operations.

The client therefore handles the sequencing: it issues a lookup, interprets the returned value, decides which conditional write is needed and sends the next request. BIND remains the authoritative store and lookup engine throughout.

Why the project calls it RISC-V

The project models a RISC-V machine, with the client and generated data representing the instruction set, registers and memory interactions. This is an implementation strategy, not a claim that BIND natively executes RISC-V binaries. The compiler translates the workload into the lookups and writes that the DNS-backed machine can service.

Is it actually Doom?

The strongest evidence is the project’s verified checkpoint. One run processed 1,389,327 RISC-V instructions and made 6,962,678 DNS transactions in 55.63 seconds. The project reports that all 4,608 pixels, all 32 registers, the program counter and the checked game state matched an independent emulator.

That is meaningful computation: the same program state and rendered output were reproduced through DNS-backed operations. It is not, however, equivalent to interactive play. The browser demonstration is explicitly labeled a computation demonstration, and the project does not present it as a usable real-time Doom port.

Why normal gameplay is impossible at this speed

Doom’s nominal rate is 35 game tics per second, so one tic should complete in roughly 28.6 milliseconds. PC Gamer reports that a DNS update takes about 54,000 milliseconds—around 54 seconds. That gap is approximately three orders of magnitude, before accounting for the many other transactions needed to process a frame.

The project’s 55.63-second verified checkpoint is consistent with that limitation: it demonstrates that the state can be computed and checked, not that a player can steer through a level at playable latency.

What you need to reproduce the demonstration

The project provides a live read-only browser demo, deployment scripts and automated tests. Its documented environment is deliberately closer to a systems experiment than to a game installation.

  • Docker
  • Bash
  • Python 3, used for the web server
  • Stock BIND configured as the authoritative DNS service
  • Several gigabytes of free RAM for the generated data and running services

Reproduction workflow

  1. Obtain the project and run its prerequisite check. The check is important because the workload uses a large generated database and rejects unsuitable environments before deployment.
  2. Start the documented BIND-based deployment with Docker. The deployment creates the truth-table data and the authoritative DNS service rather than relying on a public recursive resolver.
  3. Run the project’s automated tests to verify that lookups and state updates work before attempting the full computation.
  4. Use authoritative TXT queries for gate and fetch operations. The project documents UDP for these query paths.
  5. Use TCP for DNS UPDATE requests, following the project’s documented transport and authentication setup.
  6. Launch the included web server or open the project’s read-only browser demonstration. Treat the result as a checkpoint and visualization, not as a playable game.

The transport split matters: ordinary DNS queries and dynamic updates have different protocol requirements, and a deployment that permits reads but blocks RFC 2136 updates cannot advance the simulated machine.

The practical limits and the point of the experiment

This approach is expensive in both data volume and latency. Millions of precomputed rows consume substantial memory, and every state transition crosses a network protocol designed for name resolution rather than rapid instruction execution. The external client must also coordinate the sequence, so the database alone is not a self-contained computer.

  • REIGN IN HELL — Witness the creation of a legend as the Slayer fights Hell’s forces and confronts their leader in a medieval war.

Its value is architectural rather than practical. The experiment shows that a general-purpose database with lookup and conditional-update capabilities can represent instruction execution, registers, memory-like state and rendering when a compiler supplies the right table. It also exposes the boundary between “can compute” and “can run interactively”: matching an emulator is a correctness result, while meeting a 35-tic-per-second deadline is a performance result this system does not approach.

Why DNS experts found it amusing

Paul Vixie, identified by PC Gamer as one of DNS’s main pioneers, responded: “I can’t decide whether this is deliciously horrible, or else horribly delicious. in either case, it’s the best use of RFC 2136 DNS UPDATE that I’ve ever seen.” The joke works because DNS UPDATE is being used for a purpose far outside normal zone administration, yet the protocol’s ability to perform authenticated record changes is exactly what lets the demonstration maintain evolving state.

The accurate headline, then, is not that Doom has become a playable DNS game. Doom has been compiled into a workload that an external client can drive through a stock BIND database, with DNS providing precomputed answers and persistent updates. The result is reproducible, measurable and technically real—just dramatically slower than a game.
