Godlike.Host offers hosted Don't Starve Together servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Most Don’t Starve Together server failures fit one of five causes: damaged game files or incompatible mods, an overloaded host, an unreliable network path, an incorrect dedicated-server configuration, or a platform-service outage. Identify the symptom first, then verify files and updates, isolate mods, test the host on wired Ethernet, check firewall and UDP settings, and only then edit cluster or shard files. This order prevents a configuration change from masking a simpler client or network problem.
Start by classifying the failure
The quickest fix depends on who is affected and when the failure occurs. Use this symptom map before changing a setting:
| What you see | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| One computer crashes, reports missing content, or fails to load | Verify Steam files, install current graphics and audio drivers, check system requirements, and disable mods. |
| A dedicated-server process exits or never becomes ready | Check the -cluster and -shard paths, token, shard files, mods, and server_log.txt. |
| The server appears to run, but friends cannot join | Confirm the server is not in offline mode, allow the game through the firewall, verify the UDP and Steam ports, and check service status. |
| Everyone experiences delay, rubber-banding, or disconnects | Check host hardware and bandwidth use, distance to the host, Wi-Fi quality, and mod behavior. |
| Only console players cannot connect | Update the game, check Klei status and the console platform’s network status, then use the platform’s networking support if both services are healthy. |
Keep the scope narrow while testing: change one variable, reproduce the problem, and record the result. That makes it possible to identify whether the failure follows the client, the host, a particular shard, or the network.

Verify Steam files
Klei says file verification replaces missing or corrupted files. In Steam, open Library, right-click Don’t Starve Together, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify Integrity of Game Files. Wait for Steam to finish, then relaunch the game and test with the same world and player count.

Verification addresses the installation itself; it does not repair a broken Workshop mod, a bad cluster file, or a blocked port. If the verification reports replacements, reproduce the original failure before making another change so you know whether the repair helped.
Update drivers and confirm requirements
Use current graphics and audio drivers and compare the computer with the game’s published system requirements. Klei specifically warns that a video card with less than 256 MB of dedicated memory can cause intermittent crashes. That is an official minimum warning, not a complete modern performance recommendation: a system can meet that figure and still struggle because of its processor, available memory, driver state, or background load.
If only one machine crashes while other players remain connected, begin here rather than changing the server’s ports. Capture the exact crash message and whether it occurs at launch, while joining, or after entering the world.
Isolate mods instead of guessing at them
Mods can affect the client, the server, or both. A game update can also make a previously working mod incompatible. Treat a mod-related failure as an isolation exercise:
- Disable every client and server mod.
- Start or join the same world with the unmodified configuration.
- If the problem disappears, enable one mod at a time and test after each change.
- Confirm that each enabled mod supports the current game version and that the client and server are using compatible sets.
Review the two sides separately. A client-only interface mod and a server gameplay mod do not have the same installation or compatibility requirements, so copying a single combined list between them can create a misleading diagnosis.

Remove damaged Workshop files
If disabling mods does not clear the error, close the game and remove the contents of SteamApps\common\Don't Starve Together\mods\. Then unsubscribe from the suspect Workshop items before testing again; otherwise Steam may immediately download the same damaged files. Reinstall or resubscribe only after the unmodded game is stable, and add items back individually so the failing mod is identifiable.

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic, not just a permanent fix
Klei states: “In general, wireless connections can be unreliable for online gaming.” Temporarily connect the host computer directly to the router with a wired Ethernet cable and repeat the test. If the lag or disconnect disappears, investigate Wi-Fi signal quality, interference, router firmware, and local congestion rather than rewriting game files. This comparison isolates the wireless link from the game server itself.
Close downloads, torrents, cloud synchronization, streaming uploads, and other unnecessary background applications on the host and on the network. A connection can look fast in a speed test while queueing caused by another application produces unstable game traffic.
Check firewall permissions
Ensure the operating system firewall allows Don’t Starve Together and the dedicated-server process to communicate on the networks you actually use. If the game works locally but remote friends cannot see or join it, a blocked inbound rule is more likely than a damaged save. After changing a rule, restart the game or server and test again; an old process can retain its previous network state.
Separate local discovery from Internet access
For a same-LAN test, open the game’s Browse Games screen and set the connection filter to LAN. A successful LAN connection proves that the local server and client can communicate, but it does not prove that Steam listing, authentication, or Internet routing is working. Conversely, failure on LAN points toward the host, firewall, local address, or server process.

Confirm online mode, UDP, and service status
An online server must not be launched with -offline. That flag makes the server LAN-only, prevents public listing, and disables Steam-related functionality. For an online join failure, check the configured UDP listening port, the required Steam master and authentication ports, and whether Klei or the relevant platform is experiencing an outage. Do not treat a service outage as a local configuration problem; wait for service recovery and retest with the unchanged setup.
Dedicated-server paths and files
Dedicated servers fail to start most often when the command line points at a different cluster than the files you edited, or when one shard is missing its own configuration. Klei’s command-line reference defines this storage hierarchy:
| Item | Default location or rule |
|---|---|
| Klei root | Windows: Documents\Klei; macOS: Documents\Klei; Linux: ~/.klei. |
| Configuration directory | DoNotStarveTogether beneath the Klei root. |
| Default cluster | Cluster_1. |
| Cluster configuration | cluster.ini belongs in the cluster directory. |
| Shard configuration | Each shard has its own server.ini, for example Master/server.ini or Caves/server.ini. |
When you launch with a custom cluster name, every command and log path must refer to that same name. A valid cluster.ini with a missing Master/server.ini, or a command aimed at the wrong directory, can make the process appear to ignore your settings.
Run Master and Caves as matching shards
A two-level world uses separate Master and Caves processes. Klei’s pattern is to run one process with -cluster MyClusterName -shard Master and another with -cluster MyClusterName -shard Caves. Use the identical cluster name in both commands and verify that both shard directories contain their own server.ini. If only one process starts, inspect that shard’s log rather than assuming the other process is at fault.

Validate the command-line options
| Option | Meaning and documented limits |
|---|---|
-offline |
LAN-only operation; no public listing and no Steam-related functionality. |
-port |
UDP listening port from 1024 through 65535. For same-LAN listing, Klei specifies 10998 through 11018. |
-token |
Supplies the server authentication token. Confirm that the value belongs to the account and cluster you intend to run. |
-players |
Sets capacity from 1 through 64. |
-tick |
Accepts 15 through 60. Klei recommends the default 15; higher values increase network traffic and are intended only for suitable LAN use. |
-ugc_directory |
Sets the location used for user-generated content. |
-backup_log_count |
Number of retained log backups; default 100. |
-backup_log_period |
Backup interval in seconds; default 86,400 seconds. |
Do not raise the tick rate as a general lag remedy. It increases traffic and can make a marginal connection worse. Multiple servers on one machine also need distinct Steam master and authentication ports, in addition to distinct game listening ports where applicable.

Diagnose lag and disconnects by scope
Everyone is affected
When every player sees the same delay, start with the host. Check processor and memory load, available bandwidth, and applications competing for the connection. Move the host to wired Ethernet, stop transfers, and retest. If the issue remains, compare a session with all mods disabled and consider the geographic distance between the host and players. Longer network paths can make latency more noticeable even when the host is otherwise healthy.
Only one player is affected
A single player’s problem points toward that player’s local files, drivers, Wi-Fi, firewall, or route to the host. Have that player verify files, disable mods, and test a direct Ethernet connection while the other players remain unchanged. If the same account fails on another network or computer, record that contrast for escalation.
Disconnects occur after a configuration change
Undo the last change, especially a new mod, custom port, tick value, or shard file. Restore the documented tick default of 15 and test with one Master process before reintroducing optional settings. This creates a known-good baseline without deleting the world.

Dedicated-server log location
Klei’s guidance is precise: “For a dedicated server, you will find the server_log.txt file in wherever the server host points the -cluster command line launch option.” Follow the actual -cluster argument, not merely the default directory, and then open the relevant shard folder.
| Platform | Typical local server-log tree |
|---|---|
| Windows | Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether\...\Master or ...\Caves. |
| Linux | ~/.klei/DoNotStarveTogether/..., with the appropriate shard beneath the cluster. |
| macOS | ~/Documents/Klei/DoNotStarveTogether/..., with the appropriate shard beneath the cluster. |
Paths can differ when you supply a custom cluster location, so use the launch command as the authority. For a client-side failure, collect client_log.txt from the affected machine. For a dedicated-server failure, collect server_log.txt from the failing Master or Caves process.

Build a useful bug report
Include the logs and the context needed to reproduce the failure:
client_log.txtand, when applicable, the relevantserver_log.txt.- The relevant save files, with a backup retained before further testing.
- Operating system, game and platform details, and whether the problem affects clients, the host, or both.
- The complete server command line, cluster name, shard name, configured ports, and whether
-offlineis used. - The full mod list, which mods are client-side versus server-side, and the game version tested.
- The exact error text, when it appears, how many players are affected, and what changed immediately before it started.
Submit this package to Klei’s Don’t Starve Together bug tracker when the documented checks do not resolve the issue. For console connectivity, update the game first, check Klei’s status and the console platform’s network status, and contact the platform’s networking support if both services report normal operation.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Renting a managed server does not repair a broken mod or client installation, but it can remove several host-side variables. Use the following responsibilities to decide whether moving the server is worthwhile:
| Concern | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Public listing and Steam integration | You configure online mode, token, ports, and firewall access. | The host typically provides the network integration; exact features depend on the plan. |
| Mods and cluster files | Full control over files, shards, and launch options. | Control depends on the provider’s file manager and mod support. |
| Ports and firewall | You choose UDP ports and maintain firewall and router rules. | The provider handles the host network; you still configure in-game settings. |
| Logs | Direct access to server_log.txt and backups. |
Access depends on the provider’s panel or support process. |
| Uptime and restarts | Bound to your computer, power, operating system, and Internet connection. | Usually handled by the hosting service, subject to its service terms. |
| Hardware and bandwidth | You supply and monitor both. | Supplied by the provider, with capacity varying by plan. |
| Geographic location | Limited to where your host and connection are located. | You may be able to choose a data-center region. |
| Backups | You must copy worlds and configure log retention. | Backup frequency and retention are provider-dependent. |
| Player capacity | Set with -players, from 1 to 64, subject to your hardware. |
Still governed by the game’s setting and the plan’s resources. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting fee is established here; you bear existing hardware, power, and Internet costs. | Price is provider- and plan-dependent and is not stated here. |
Consider managed hosting when keeping a personal computer online, opening ports, maintaining backups, or troubleshooting hardware is the recurring burden. Keep self-hosting when you need unrestricted cluster-file control and are comfortable owning those operational tasks.
A repeatable recovery order
For a difficult case, use this sequence and stop as soon as the fault is isolated:
Quick Recap
- Classify the symptom and identify whether one player, the host, one shard, or everyone is affected.
- Update the game, verify Steam files, and check drivers and system requirements.
- Disable all mods and test an unmodified session.
- Test the host over wired Ethernet, stop bandwidth-heavy applications, and confirm firewall permissions.
- For a dedicated server, validate the cluster and shard paths, token, UDP port, Steam ports, and Master/Caves processes.
- Check Klei and platform service status, especially for console or public-listing failures.
- Collect the correct logs and configuration details, then submit a complete report to Klei if the failure persists.
