For a dedicated Don’t Starve Together server, Klei lists a 1.7+ GHz processor, at least 1 GB of RAM, and at least 1 GB of storage. Those figures are official minimums, not a guarantee that every computer will handle every player count, mod collection, or world setup. Klei specifically tells hosts to exceed the listed requirements.
The biggest sizing decision is whether you run a forest-only world or a forest-and-caves world. Caves run multiple servers at the same time and are CPU-intensive, so they need more processing headroom. Network quality, operating-system compatibility, security software, and the amount of maintenance you want to perform also matter when choosing between a computer at home and a rented game-server or VPS service.
Official dedicated-server requirements
Klei Entertainment’s “Don’t Starve Together System Requirements” page, updated July 25, 2025, gives the following baseline for a dedicated server:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Component | Published minimum | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1.7+ GHz | Official minimum clock speed; Klei does not publish a dedicated-server core-count target. |
| Memory | 1+ GB RAM | Minimum system memory listed by Klei; it is not a per-player allowance. |
| Storage | 1+ GB | Minimum hard-drive space listed for the dedicated server; no current recommended disk size or speed is specified. |
Klei adds an important qualification: the hosting system should surpass the requirements. A machine that barely meets 1.7 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, and 1 GB of free space may launch the software, yet still leave little room for the operating system, Steam, world data, logs, updates, or other services. Treat the table as a floor for compatibility rather than a performance target.

These specifications also do not establish how many players a computer can support. There is no official player-count calculator, RAM-per-player formula, modern “recommended” tier, or independent benchmark attached to the requirements page. A question such as “Will this handle three players?” cannot be answered from the minimum figures alone; world type, mods, background workloads, processor behavior, and network conditions all affect the result.
Forest worlds and caves have different CPU demands
Forest-only setup
A forest-only world uses the ordinary forest server process. It is the simpler configuration for a first dedicated server because it avoids the extra simulation process that caves require. The official minimums remain the starting point, but keeping meaningful headroom is prudent when the host computer also runs a desktop, voice chat, backups, or other applications.
Forest plus caves
In its caves support article dated July 15, 2026, Klei explains: “Please note that hosting a forest and caves world requires running multiple servers at the same time which is CPU-intensive and requires a beefier computer setup.” In practical terms, a caves world should be assigned a faster, less-busy processor than a comparable forest-only world. Klei does not quantify “beefier”: it supplies no extra GHz figure, core count, RAM number, or player table.

Do not translate the caves warning into a made-up requirement such as 2 GB, 4 GB, or 8 GB of RAM, or into a claim that adding cores alone solves the problem. More cores may help a machine keep other tasks responsive, but Klei’s published guidance identifies the workload as CPU-intensive without defining a particular hardware tier. Plan for additional CPU headroom and test the actual world under the load you expect.

How much RAM does a server need?
Use 1 GB as a floor, not a target
Klei lists 1+ GB of RAM for the dedicated server and tells hosts to exceed the system requirements. That number describes the minimum baseline in Klei’s documentation; it does not mean that 1 GB is a sensible allocation for a modern host running an operating system, Steam components, the server, and optional mods. The available memory on the whole machine matters, not just the amount assigned to one process.
Because Klei does not publish a memory-per-player calculation, you should not estimate capacity by multiplying a supposed amount of RAM by the number of friends. A small group can still encounter trouble if the host is running several services or a large mod set, while a lightly configured world may use less memory. Monitor the host during a real session rather than relying on an invented formula.
Mods and out-of-memory errors
Klei’s “Out of Memory Error (Dont Starve Together)” guidance, updated July 22, 2025, says an out-of-memory error can indicate that the computer does not meet the system requirements and advises ensuring that the system surpasses them. The same guidance discusses mods as a troubleshooting factor. Disable recently added or unusually demanding mods, restart the server, and then reintroduce changes one at a time. A mod-related failure is not proof that Klei has a higher fixed RAM requirement; it means the complete workload needs more memory than is currently available.
CPU considerations beyond the clock speed
The published 1.7+ GHz figure is a minimum clock-speed specification, not a modern performance ranking. Processor architecture, sustained boost behavior, thermal throttling, and competing processes can all change how responsive a server feels. Klei does not provide a dedicated-server core-count recommendation, so avoid presenting a particular number of cores as official guidance.

Caves make processor capacity more important because the forest and cave portions run as multiple servers at once. On a shared computer, reserve headroom for the operating system and whatever you use to administer the server. If the host becomes CPU-bound, players may notice delayed simulation or inconsistent responsiveness even when the internet connection looks healthy. Measure utilization during active play; an idle reading before anyone connects says little about the busy case.
Network quality and server location
Klei states that host hardware and network performance affect both the host and connected players. Its Network and Performance Troubleshooting Guide recommends joining servers that show a ping of 150 or below for optimal network performance. That value is guidance for players choosing a server, not a hosting-service specification, upload-bandwidth guarantee, or universal latency promise.
For a self-hosted machine, consider the connection’s stability, upload capacity, routing to your friends, and whether the computer is connected by reliable Ethernet or a congested wireless link. For a rented service, check the actual data-center region, network policy, and monitoring tools offered at the time you subscribe. A geographically distant server can feel worse than a less powerful computer located near the players, while an overloaded host can create problems even with low ping.
Choosing between a local computer and rented hosting
Self-hosting at home
A separate computer gives you direct control over the operating system, files, backups, mods, and restart schedule. It can be an existing desktop or a small dedicated machine, provided its processor, RAM, storage, operating-system compatibility, and network interface suit the workload. Klei’s pages list older operating-system versions, so verify current Steam and game compatibility before selecting an operating system; do not assume that an old version named on a support page is the best choice today.

Rented game-server or VPS hosting
A managed game-server or VPS service can remove some hardware and maintenance work, but capabilities, prices, uptime, locations, resource limits, and support policies vary by provider and change over time. No universal plan or vendor is established by Klei’s requirements. Before paying, verify the current details rather than choosing from a generic “game server” label.
- Confirm the allocated CPU capacity, RAM, storage type, and whether resources are shared or reserved.
- Check that the service supports the current Steam and Don’t Starve Together server software.
- Choose a location close to the expected players and review latency or test options.
- Ask how backups, mod installation, updates, console access, and recovery are handled.
- Read renewal pricing, resource overage rules, cancellation terms, and any suspension policy.
Cost and uptime are legitimate comparison criteria, but current prices and service-level claims require dated provider information. Klei does not endorse a particular host, and the official requirements do not establish a hosting-service price or uptime ranking.
A practical sizing and setup process
- Define the world. Decide whether you need forest only or forest plus caves. Record the intended mods and the other applications that will run on the machine.
- Check the baseline. Verify at least a 1.7+ GHz processor, 1+ GB RAM, and 1+ GB of free storage, then choose a system that exceeds those figures as Klei advises.
- Reserve headroom. Leave memory and CPU capacity for the operating system, Steam, logs, updates, backups, and administration. Caves warrant more CPU margin because multiple servers run concurrently.
- Verify software compatibility. Confirm that the operating system, Steam installation, and current game-server files are supported. Klei’s requirements page includes older OS references; treat those as documentation context, not an automatic modern recommendation.
- Plan connectivity. Place the host near the players when possible, prefer a stable wired connection, and test latency while the server is active. Use Klei’s 150-or-below ping guidance as a player-facing quality reference, not as a bandwidth specification.
- Test the real workload. Start the intended world, connect the expected players, enable the planned mods, and watch CPU, memory, storage, and network behavior. Increase resources or remove competing workloads if the host becomes constrained.
- Document recovery. Keep world saves and configuration backups, record the mod list, and establish a restart procedure before inviting others. This turns a hardware problem or failed update into a recoverable outage rather than a lost world.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Dedicated Server Failed To Start”
Klei’s dedicated-server startup guidance identifies security software as a possible cause, particularly when caves are enabled. Windows Security or another security product may block the server executables before they can launch. Add the relevant Don’t Starve Together server executables to the product’s allowed or trusted list, then retry. Only create narrowly scoped exceptions for files you recognize, and remove an exception if you later uninstall or replace the server.

Out-of-memory message
First check the whole computer’s available RAM and close unrelated applications. Confirm that the host exceeds Klei’s published baseline, then test with mods disabled. If the server works without a mod, add mods back individually to identify the trigger. Do not infer a universal RAM-per-player requirement from one failure; the error reflects the particular combination of operating system, server, world, mods, and other processes.

Lag despite adequate hardware
Check whether the processor is saturated by the forest-and-caves workload or by another application. Then check packet loss, latency, and the host’s connection while players are online. Klei’s ping recommendation concerns the player’s choice of server and does not guarantee that a host with a displayed ping under 150 will perform well under every load. A stable nearby connection and sufficient CPU headroom must be evaluated together.
What the official figures can—and cannot—tell you
The 1.7+ GHz, 1+ GB RAM, and 1+ GB storage figures are useful for rejecting a machine that is clearly below the documented floor. They are not a capacity promise, a modern recommended build, or a way to calculate a player limit. Klei’s own wording to surpass the requirements is the safest interpretation.
For a forest-only server with a light workload, a computer comfortably above the minimum may be adequate, but only a live test can confirm that for your software and players. For caves, start with noticeably more CPU headroom because Klei explicitly describes the configuration as multiple, CPU-intensive servers. Keep RAM, storage, and network capacity above the minimum as well, and treat mods as an additional variable rather than a fixed specification.
