If your Don’t Starve Together server is missing from Browse Games, first separate a discovery problem from a startup or network problem. Reset the browser filters, search the exact cluster_name, and check both Online and LAN connection modes. Then confirm Steam is Online, the server process started with the intended cluster and shard files, and the port is valid. A server started with -offline is deliberately hidden from the public list, while a failed process, blocked executable, incompatible mod, VPN, firewall, or version mismatch can prevent any listing at all.
Use the checks below in order. They move from client-side filtering to server configuration, startup errors, network blockers, and finally a possible browser regression, so you do not rebuild a healthy server unnecessarily.

Don’t Starve Together has separate discovery paths. Online lists servers reachable through the public service, while LAN is for players on the same local network. A server can be healthy on one path and invisible on the other. Steam Offline mode is another intentional restriction: Klei states that DST permits LAN play in Steam Offline mode, not public online play.
The server browser can also hide a running server through filters. A name search, connection setting, game-mode choice, or another remembered filter may exclude it without any server fault. Conversely, an empty result can reflect a process that never started, a wrong cluster directory, a blocked executable, or a client and server running different builds.

Think of the problem as five separate questions:
- Can the client query the server service?
- Are Browse Games filters looking in the right place?
- Is the server configured for public or local visibility?
- Did the dedicated-server process start with the intended files and port?
- Is software or a network path blocking discovery or joining?
Answering those questions in that order is faster than repeatedly changing ports or reinstalling the game.
1. Confirm the client can obtain a current server list
Sign in to the Klei account and put Steam Online
- Open Steam and verify its status is Online, not Offline Mode.
- Launch DST and make sure the client is connected to your Klei account.
- Install any pending DST or Steam updates, then restart Steam if it just updated.
- On the main screen, select Browse Games.
Klei’s joining guidance says to connect to a Klei account, open Browse Games, and use the filters or name search to find a server. If Steam remains Offline, expect only LAN discovery; an Internet-hosted server will not appear in the public list.

Verify the game files
In Steam, open DST’s properties and run the file-integrity verification. Damaged or incomplete client files can prevent the browser from loading correctly or leave the client on an older build. Relaunch the game after verification rather than testing from the already-running session.
Check whether the problem affects every server
Clear all search fields and filters and see whether other servers load. If the entire list is empty, the client’s account, Steam connection, update state, or service availability is more likely than your individual server. If other servers appear but yours does not, continue with the filter and server checks below.
2. Reset Browse Games filters and search correctly
Clear every remembered filter
- Open Browse Games.
- Remove any text from the server-name search box.
- Reset game mode, password, player-count, region, and other filters to their broadest settings.
- Set the Connection filter to Online when the host and player are connecting over the Internet.
- Set it to LAN when both machines are on the same local network.
- Refresh the list and wait for the results to repopulate before adding a filter back.
Klei’s network guidance specifically instructs LAN players to change Connection from Online to LAN. A local server can therefore look “missing” simply because the browser is still searching the online catalog.
Use the exact cluster name
The browser displays the value configured as cluster_name. Search that value exactly, including spaces, punctuation, and capitalization where the interface preserves them. Do not search for the folder name unless it is also the configured cluster name. Klei forum guidance recommends resetting filters and searching by cluster_name when a server is not visible.

Check the expected discovery scope

3. Check whether the server is intentionally hidden
Look for the -offline launch option
A server launched with Klei’s -offline option is not listed publicly. That setting is appropriate for local-network play, but it cannot satisfy a player searching the online browser. Remove the option and restart the server when remote players need to discover it through Online.
After changing the option, test with the correct Connection filter. Changing the launch option does not make an already-running process change its discovery mode; the process must be stopped and started again.
Use a valid LAN port
Klei’s Dedicated Server Command Line Options Guide states that the port must be between 10998 and 11018 inclusive for players on the same LAN to see the server in their listing. This is a LAN-discovery requirement, not a general guarantee that every Internet setup will work.

Check the configured port for each shard and make sure the firewall rule uses the same port. If you select a value outside that range, local players may be unable to see the server even when the process appears to be running.
4. Verify the cluster, shard, and configuration files
Confirm the intended cluster directory
A dedicated server can start successfully while loading a different cluster than the one you edited. Inspect the launch arguments and confirm that -cluster points to the cluster directory containing the settings you expect. The directory should contain cluster.ini.
Confirm the shard files
Each shard needs its expected server.ini. Check both the Master and Caves configuration when caves are enabled. A launch command that points at the wrong -shard can create a server with an unexpected name, port, mode, or world settings, making it appear absent when you are searching for another configuration.
Use the Master/Caves launch pattern documented by Klei: start the intended cluster and explicitly select the shard in the launch arguments. Do not assume that editing one cluster or shard changes every saved world on the machine.

Compare the displayed name with the file you edited
Open the cluster.ini in the cluster actually selected by the launch command and read its cluster_name. Search that exact value in Browse Games. If the browser shows a name you do not recognize, you are probably launching a different cluster directory or shard than expected.
5. Make sure the dedicated-server process starts cleanly
Recognize a startup failure
If the console or log reports “Dedicated Server Failed To Start,” the server cannot advertise itself because there is no working process to list. Klei identifies software blocking the game application as a common cause, especially when caves are enabled.
Allow the required executables
In your antivirus, firewall, and Windows Controlled Folder Access settings, allow the executable that matches your installation. Klei lists these files:

Allowing only the normal game executable may not be enough; the null-renderer dedicated-server executable also has to start. If Controlled Folder Access blocks the process from reading or writing the cluster files, add the executable through Windows Security or temporarily disable the protection only while testing, then restore protection and create a precise allow rule.

Klei advises disabling all dedicated-server mods when initialization fails. Start with no server mods, confirm that the unmodded server appears, and then re-enable mods one at a time. This identifies the first mod that prevents startup or changes the server’s behavior.
If the game still fails after disabling the in-game list, close DST, delete the game’s Mods folder, unsubscribe from Workshop mods, and relaunch. This removes files that a simple toggle can leave behind.
6. Remove network and security blockers
Restart the complete path
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Exit DST and Steam completely.
- Restart the computer running the server and the joining computer.
- Restart the router, allowing it to finish reconnecting.
- Start Steam Online, update DST if prompted, and then start the server.
Klei recommends this sequence because a stale Steam session, router state, or blocked process can survive a game-only restart.

Test without a VPN or accelerator
Temporarily disconnect VPN and game-accelerator software on both the host and the player. These tools can place the two machines on different virtual routes or prevent local broadcast traffic from reaching the browser. Test again with the normal network connection before deciding whether the server configuration is wrong.
Check firewall rules on the host
Allow DST and the dedicated-server executable through the operating-system firewall on the network profile in use. If Windows asks whether to allow private or public networks, choose the profile that matches your network and avoid creating an unnecessarily broad rule. Recheck the rule after an update because Steam may install a new executable path or version.
Try wired Ethernet and reduce competing traffic
Klei recommends wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unreliable and notes that background applications can consume bandwidth. Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, streams, and other traffic while testing. For optimal network performance, Klei recommends a ping of 150 ms or below; a higher or unstable ping can make a server difficult to join even after it appears.
Consider local-network isolation
Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, and separate VLANs can place the host and player on the same physical router but prevent them from seeing each other. Test both devices on the same private network, not a guest network, and compare with a wired connection. If LAN discovery works only after moving networks, the router’s isolation policy is the cause.
7. Compare client and server versions
The browser filters results by the client’s current build and connection mode. If the server was visible before an update, compare the client and dedicated-server versions, install all pending updates, and restart Steam before testing again.
Do not add or remove mods while diagnosing a version mismatch. First establish that an unmodded server on the current build starts and appears. Then restore the intended mods one at a time. A client that updated while the server stayed on an older build may fail to list or join it even though the server process is running.

Klei’s bug tracker records a reproduced incident in which a running local server was absent from the LAN browser; that issue was later marked Fixed. This establishes that the list itself can be wrong temporarily.

When the host and client are the same machine, open the DST console and try:
c_connect("localhost")This is a diagnostic bypass. A successful connection proves that the local process is reachable, but it does not prove that the browser, remote networking, or public discovery is healthy. If direct connection works while Browse Games remains empty, record the client version, server version, connection mode, and exact filters, then check Klei’s current service status and support notices before rebuilding the cluster.
9. Use the symptom to choose the next fix

10. Escalate with evidence instead of rebuilding blindly
Check service status first
Before changing cluster files, check Klei’s service-status information. A service-side outage or browser regression can affect many servers at once, and local reconfiguration will not correct it.
Collect the logs Klei requests
If the process fails to start or discovery remains broken after the checks above, prepare the client’s client_log.txt and the dedicated server logs. Include the time of the failure, Steam and DST versions, whether Steam was Online, the selected Online or LAN filter, the launch options, the cluster and shard used, the configured port, and whether mods were disabled.
Report through the DST Bug Tracker or support
Klei explicitly requests logs when startup or connectivity troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. A report that includes the exact symptom, reproducible steps, configuration files, and logs is more useful than a statement that the server is “not visible.” Do not upload account credentials, passwords, or private network keys.
A compact recovery checklist
- Put Steam Online and sign in to the Klei account.
- Install updates and verify DST files.
- Reset Browse Games filters and clear the search box.
- Search the exact
cluster_name. - Test Online for remote play and LAN for the same local network.
- Remove
-offlinewhen public listing is required. - Use a LAN port from 10998 through 11018 inclusive.
- Confirm
cluster.ini, each shard’sserver.ini, and the intended-clusterand-shardarguments. - Allow the listed DST and null-renderer executables through security software and Controlled Folder Access.
- Disable all dedicated-server mods, then restore them one at a time.
- Restart the computer and router, disconnect VPN software, and test wired Ethernet.
- Compare client and server builds.
- Use
c_connect("localhost")only as a local diagnostic if the browser may be regressed. - Check Klei status and submit
client_log.txtplus server logs if the issue persists.
Bottom line
Most missing DST servers are found by correcting the discovery path rather than rebuilding the world: reset filters, search the configured cluster_name, and select Online or LAN according to where the players are. If that fails, verify that the intended cluster and shard actually started, that the server is not using -offline, and that its LAN port is 10998–11018. Startup blocks, mods, VPNs, firewalls, version mismatches, and occasional browser regressions are the remaining major branches. Work through them in that order and preserve the logs before making destructive configuration changes.
