When Don’t Starve Together says a server is not responding, the cause is usually one of three things: the host and players are on different game builds or branches, a firewall or router is blocking traffic, or a mod is preventing the world from starting. Work through those causes in that order. First make every player use the same branch, update and restart the dedicated server, then test the connection directly by IP. If the server still fails, remove mods, verify the cave-shard setting, and collect logs from both computers.
The steps below combine the fixes reported by players and server administrators. Most reports are community experiences rather than guarantees for every 2026 game build, so note exactly which step changes the symptom.
What “server not responding” means
Don’t Starve Together can fail at several points in its connection chain. The game may not list the server, show a timeout while joining, kick you immediately, or fail before the world process starts. Those symptoms point to different layers of the setup.

A hosted world normally involves a server process, and a caves-enabled world adds another process for the cave shard. Hardware load, world size, distance between players and host, and caves can therefore change whether a connection succeeds even when the network settings are correct.

Prepare a quick inventory before changing settings
Write down the facts below. They prevent you from applying a fix to the wrong machine and make a later log report useful.
- Which computer runs the world: the in-game host or a dedicated server.
- The operating system and whether the host is behind a home router, school network, VPN, or carrier-grade NAT.
- The branch shown in Steam for every player and for the dedicated-server installation.
- Whether the failure occurs in the server browser, during loading, or immediately after joining.
- Whether the world uses caves, how large the world is, and how many players are connecting.
- The exact mods enabled in the cluster and whether the problem began after a mod update.
- The server’s slot number in the Host Game screen; this determines the
Cluster_#folder used for logs.
Do not change several unrelated settings at once. After each change, restart the server and make one connection attempt so you know which action affected the result.
1. Put every player and server on the same branch
A branch mismatch is the fastest fix to test and one of the most common explanations for a quick kick. A December 2025 community report described the error disappearing after Steam Beta Participation was changed back to Normal. The host and every client must be on the same branch; a public test branch on only one machine is enough to break compatibility.
Check the client branch
- Open Steam and go to your library.
- Right-click Don’t Starve Together, choose Properties, and open Betas.
- Set Beta Participation to None or Normal (the label can vary by Steam version) unless everyone intentionally uses the same test branch.
- Wait for Steam to finish any download, then repeat the check on every player’s computer.
Check the dedicated-server branch
Open the dedicated server’s Steam properties and select the same branch used by the game clients. If the server was installed through a separate Steam tool, check that tool rather than assuming it inherited the game’s setting. A branch change is not complete until Steam has downloaded the corresponding files and the old server process has been stopped.
If one player can join while another cannot, compare the failing player’s branch first. A branch mismatch can look like a networking problem because the server appears in the list but rejects the connection.

2. Update the dedicated server and restart it
A server that was not updated after a game patch can accept a connection attempt and then eject the player almost immediately. Use Steam’s update control for the dedicated-server installation, not only the update control for the normal game.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly. Do not leave an older server process running in the background.
- In Steam, open the dedicated-server tool’s Properties and allow Steam to download pending updates.
- Let the download finish completely; a queued download or paused update leaves the old executable in place.
- Start the server again and wait until it has finished loading the world before joining.
- Have a client close and reopen Steam as well, so the client is not using an older process or pending update.
If the server updates repeatedly or reports missing files, use Steam’s file-verification function for the dedicated-server installation, then update again. This is a general recovery step for damaged local files; it does not correct a branch mismatch or a blocked port.
3. Test firewalls and router paths safely
The host’s operating-system firewall, security suite, router, and any firewall between the two networks can each block the traffic. A useful diagnostic is to disable the host firewall briefly, start the server, and attempt one connection. If the connection works only while the firewall is off, turn it back on immediately and create a specific allow rule rather than leaving protection disabled.
Allow the game and server executables
- Permit
dontstarve_dedicated_server_nullrenderer.exeon the computer running the dedicated server. - Permit
dontstarve_steam.exeon the relevant computer when the firewall asks about the game process. - Apply the rule to the correct network profile (private or trusted for a home LAN). Avoid granting broad public-network access unless your network design requires it.
- If a security product has its own application-control list, add both executables there as well; the operating-system firewall rule may not override a separate security suite.
Check the router and port path
If players are joining from outside the host’s home network, the router must pass the server’s required traffic to the host computer. Confirm that the forwarding rule points to the host’s current local IP address, not an address that changed after a reboot. A reserved DHCP lease or static local address prevents the rule from silently targeting another device.
Only open the ports required by the server configuration. Port numbers can vary with the game’s current configuration, so use the values shown in the server’s configuration and log rather than copying an unrelated internet example. Never expose administration interfaces or an entire range “just to see if it works.” After testing, remove temporary rules that are no longer needed.

4. Whitelist the game in antivirus and router security
Some antivirus products quarantine or sandbox a newly updated executable even though the operating-system firewall appears open. Add the game and dedicated-server executables to the security product’s allowlist, then launch the server again. Check the product’s quarantine and event history for a blocked executable or network action.
Routers can also have intrusion prevention, parental controls, gaming filters, or client-isolation settings. Make sure the host is not placed on a guest Wi-Fi network that prevents inbound connections from another device. If local players can connect but remote players cannot, the router or upstream network is more likely than the game files to be responsible.
5. Try administrator permissions only as a diagnostic
One forum user reported success by setting both dontstarve_dedicated_server_nullrenderer.exe and dontstarve_steam.exe to run as administrator, while also allowing them through the firewall on both PCs. This is a single anecdote, not a universal requirement, and elevated permissions increase the impact of a compromised process.
- Close the game and server.
- Open each executable’s file properties and use the compatibility settings to enable Run this program as an administrator for one test.
- Start the server, attempt one connection, and record whether the symptom changes.
- If there is no improvement, undo the elevation and continue with branch, firewall, and mod checks.
Do not use administrator mode to compensate for an incorrect folder permission, a blocked port, or a mismatched build. Those causes require their own fixes.

6. Bypass the server browser with a direct IP test
A direct connection separates a listing or matchmaking fault from a server or network fault. Ask the host for the address and port displayed by the server setup, then open the in-game console from the main menu and use the game’s connect command with that address. Use the syntax accepted by your current build; do not include quotation marks or extra characters unless the console’s help text requires them.

Interpret the result:
- Direct connection succeeds: the world and basic network path work. The remaining problem is likely the server browser, matchmaking visibility, or a listing-related firewall rule.
- Direct connection times out: investigate the host firewall, router forwarding, NAT, and whether the address is reachable from the player’s network.
- Direct connection is rejected immediately: return to branch and version checks, then disable mods.
For a same-home-network test, use the host’s local address. For an internet test, use the externally reachable address configured for the server. Testing from the same network cannot prove that an internet router rule works.
7. Remove mods, then add them back one at a time
A mod can prevent the server from completing startup or can crash the world when a client joins. This is especially likely after a game update or when only one player has a different mod version.
- Stop the server and make a backup of the cluster and world files.
- Disable every server and client mod in the configuration. Do not leave a “small” cosmetic mod enabled during the test.
- Start the server and attempt a connection with an unmodded client.
- If the server now works, re-enable one mod, restart, and test again.
- Continue until the failing mod or combination is identified. Check that all players receive the same required mod files and versions.
If the server still fails with no mods enabled, mods are not the immediate cause; continue with logs, resource load, and network checks instead of repeatedly reinstalling them.

Caves run as a second server process. They therefore consume additional CPU, memory, and network resources, and they require the cluster to be configured for shard communication. A commonly reported configuration error is leaving the shard flag disabled.
- Stop the server before editing configuration files.
- Open the cluster’s
cluster.inifile. - Under the
[SHARD]section, confirm that the lineshard_enabled = trueis present. - Save the file, start the server, and wait for both the overworld and cave processes to initialize.
- Test an overworld connection first, then enter a cave. If the overworld works but cave travel fails, inspect the server log for the shard process rather than changing router settings again.
Do not enable caves on a machine that is already exhausting memory or CPU. Reduce the load by closing other applications, lowering the world size where practical, or testing without caves to determine whether capacity is the limiting factor.

9. Account for hardware, distance, and world load
The host must run the simulation and send state updates to every connected player. Larger worlds, more players, caves, and a long physical network distance can increase latency or cause the host process to stop responding. These factors do not create a branch mismatch, but they can make a correctly configured server appear unreliable.
- Watch CPU, memory, and disk activity while the server starts and while a player joins.
- Close downloads, video encoders, virtual machines, and other programs competing for resources.
- Prefer a wired connection for the host when possible; avoid testing from a congested or isolated guest Wi-Fi network.
- Compare a small, new world without caves to the original world. A small-world success points to load or world-data issues rather than basic connectivity.
- Test with one nearby player before inviting the full group. Add players gradually so the point at which the host becomes unstable is visible.
10. Restart the computer when the server process is stuck
A player reported that restarting the PC resolved a “Dedicated Server Failed to Start” error. Rebooting clears orphaned server processes, releases locked files, reloads firewall services, and resets a stale network adapter. It is low risk, but treat it as a quick cleanup step rather than evidence that the underlying configuration is correct.

- Stop the game and dedicated server.
- Use the operating system’s process list to confirm no dedicated-server process remains.
- Restart the host PC and, if the failure affects only one person, restart that client PC too.
- Launch the updated server first, wait for a ready state, and then connect with one client.
How to collect logs when the fixes do not work
Logs are more useful than a screenshot of the error because they identify whether startup, authentication, networking, or a mod failed. Collect files from both sides of the connection:
client_log.txtfrom the computer that is trying to join.server_log.txtfrom the computer hosting the world.
The server log is stored in a Cluster_# folder under DocumentsKleiDoNotStarveTogether. The number corresponds to the server slot shown in the Host Game screen. Copy the log immediately after reproducing the failure so the relevant entries are near the end.
When asking for help, include the game and server branch, whether the server is dedicated or in-game hosted, whether caves and mods are enabled, the exact time of the failed attempt, and which checklist steps changed the symptom. Remove account names, public IP addresses, passwords, tokens, and other private data before sharing logs. Community moderators commonly request both client and server logs because one side alone cannot show where the connection stopped.

A practical order for a fresh incident
For most cases, this sequence finds the fault with the fewest risky changes:

- Confirm every player and the server use the same Steam branch.
- Update the dedicated-server tool, stop old processes, and restart it.
- Try a direct IP connection to avoid relying on the server browser.
- Temporarily test the host firewall, then restore it and add narrow allow rules.
- Whitelist the game in antivirus and check router isolation or forwarding.
- Disable every mod and re-enable them individually.
- If caves are enabled, verify
shard_enabled = trueunder[SHARD]and test resource load. - Restart the host PC, reproduce the error once, and collect both logs if it remains.
The error is not a diagnosis by itself. A branch mismatch is fixed in Steam, a blocked path is fixed in security or router settings, and a broken mod or shard is fixed in the server configuration. Direct-IP testing and paired client/server logs tell you which category you are actually dealing with.
