Godlike.Host offers hosted Don't Starve Together servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
When Don’t Starve Together mods fail, the cause is usually one of four things: the Workshop download is incomplete, the mod is enabled in the wrong scope, local mod files are corrupted, or a dedicated server cannot initialize with that mod set. Fix the problem in that order: verify the subscription and in-game visibility, distinguish client mods from server mods, perform a clean reset, then test a dedicated server with no mods before adding them back.
Klei Entertainment warns that “All mods are to be used at your own risk!” Individual Workshop projects can also change independently, so a mod that worked previously may require a current compatibility check by its author.
Start by identifying what “not working” means
A mod can be installed correctly yet appear to do nothing because it is enabled for a different context. Before deleting files, classify the failure:

Work through the checks below rather than changing several variables at once. A one-mod test gives you a useful result; re-enabling everything simultaneously does not.

Confirm that Steam actually installed the Workshop item
- In Steam, open the Don’t Starve Together Workshop and subscribe to the mod.
- Watch Steam’s download status until the Workshop item has finished downloading. A subscription alone does not prove that the local files are ready.
- Launch DST and open the Mods menu. The item should be listed there before you attempt to create or join a world.
- If it is still absent, restart Steam and launch DST again. This is the least destructive fix and should be tried before deleting game files.
If the mod remains absent after a completed download and a Steam restart, note whether other Workshop mods appear. If none appear, the problem is likely local Workshop access rather than one mod. If only one item is missing, check that project’s current Workshop page and compatibility notes; projects can be updated or withdrawn independently of the game.
Understand client mods versus server (world) mods
DST has two different mod scopes. A client mod is selected by each player and affects that player’s game. A server or world mod is enabled by the host or dedicated server and affects the world session. The two lists are not interchangeable.

Client mods
Use a client mod when its function is intended for an individual player, such as a user-interface or personal information change. Every player who needs that effect must enable it in their own client list. Enabling it for the host does not automatically install or activate it for everyone else.
Server and world mods in a hosted game
For a game hosted from the regular DST client, go to Host Game → Create New World → Mods. Enable the server/world mods on that screen before generating the world. A mod can be visible in the general Mods menu but have no effect in a world if it was only enabled as a client mod.
Mods on a dedicated server
A dedicated server has its own installation and world configuration. Do not assume that a mod enabled in your desktop client is available to the server process. Install the intended Workshop items for the server, enable them in the server’s configuration, and ensure that the world’s settings reference the same mods. A client-only mod may be perfectly functional for a player while doing nothing on the server.

When troubleshooting, write down which scope you are testing. “It works for me in a hosted game” proves only that the hosted world and that particular client have a compatible setup; it does not prove that a dedicated server has the files or configuration it needs.
Perform a clean reset of a broken mod download
Use a clean reset when a mod is missing, repeatedly fails to load, shows a damaged-looking entry, or behaves differently after an update. The reset removes both the local files and the Workshop subscription so Steam can obtain a fresh copy.
- Close DST and stop any dedicated server process that uses the affected installation.
- In the game’s Mods menu or world configuration, disable the suspected mod. If several mods are implicated, disable all of them for the test.
- Delete the DST local
modsfiles using Klei’s troubleshooting procedure. Remove only the DST mod files, not unrelated save data or the entire Steam library. - Unsubscribe from the corresponding Workshop entries. Leaving the subscription active can cause Steam to restore the same damaged files immediately.
- Restart Steam and subscribe to one known-good mod first.
- Launch DST, confirm that the single mod appears in the Mods menu, and test it in a new or disposable world.
- Restore the remaining mods one at a time, testing after each addition. If the failure returns, the last mod added is the useful suspect.
This sequence is deliberately conservative. Testing one item after a reset separates a bad download from a scope problem and prevents a whole collection of broken files from being mistaken for a server fault.
Fix entries displayed as workshop-xxxxxxx
An entry that shows a numeric Workshop-style name instead of its normal title is a file-access symptom, not a special mod type. Klei associates this display with missing Windows administrator permissions required for Steam and the game to read and write their directories.
Check the Windows account and application access
- Use a Windows account with administrator-level access for the Steam and DST installation.
- Verify that Steam and DST are allowed to read and write the game and Workshop directories. If the game is installed in a protected location, review that location’s permissions rather than repeatedly reinstalling the mod.
- After changing permissions, restart Steam before checking the Mods menu again.
Check security software
Antivirus or endpoint-security software can block Steam or DST from creating, changing, or reading mod files. Review the product’s own event log and allow-list instructions. Add an allow rule only through those documented controls, and limit it to the legitimate Steam or DST executable and required directory. Do not disable security protection permanently just to test a mod.

If the name remains in the workshop-xxxxxxx form after access is corrected, repeat the clean reset: unsubscribe, remove the local DST mod files, restart Steam, and subscribe again. The permission fix and the fresh download address different parts of the same failure, so both may be required.
Diagnose a dedicated server that fails to start
A dedicated server can fail during initialization because one enabled mod prevents startup. The fastest safe isolation method is to establish a vanilla baseline.
Run a no-mod baseline
- Disable every server/world mod in the dedicated server configuration.
- Start the server with the intended cluster and shards but no mods.
- Confirm that the server reaches its normal running state before changing anything else.
If the unmodded server still fails, the mod set is not the immediate cause. Collect the server’s relevant diagnostics and follow Klei’s support or bug-reporting process. Klei specifically requests client_log.txt when reporting persistent issues; include the log from the failed attempt rather than a log from a later successful run.
Re-enable mods incrementally
- If vanilla startup succeeds, enable one server mod and restart.
- Check whether the server initializes and whether the mod’s world behavior appears as expected.
- Continue one at a time, or use small groups only when you have many known-compatible mods.
- When startup fails again, remove the last addition and retest. That identifies the smallest useful suspect set.
Do not add client-only mods to the server simply because they are visible in your personal Mods menu. The server process needs a mod that supports server/world scope and a configuration entry appropriate to that world.

A DST cluster commonly contains a Master shard and a Caves shard. The dedicated-server documentation recommends a consistent intended mod set and compatible configuration across shards. A mod installed on one shard but not the other can produce missing features, connection errors, or behavior that looks random because players move between worlds.

Use the server installation file for Workshop mods
Dedicated-server setups use dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua to describe the mods the server should install. Check that this file contains the intended Workshop items or collection setup for the server installation, then allow the server’s Steam-related installation step to complete before launching the world.
Use per-world overrides for activation
Each world’s active settings are controlled through its modoverrides.lua configuration. Compare the Master and Caves files and make sure the same intended server mods are enabled with compatible settings. “Installed” in the server’s mod directory is not the same as “enabled” in a shard’s world configuration.
Check changes on both shards
- Stop the cluster before editing mod setup or world override files.
- Compare the intended mod list for Master and Caves.
- Apply compatible configuration values to each shard’s
modoverrides.lua. - Start the cluster and test a connection to each shard.
- If one shard fails, isolate that shard with the no-mod baseline instead of changing both configurations at once.
When a Workshop project changes its configuration format, review its current compatibility notes before copying old settings into both shards. A previously valid override can become incompatible after an author update.
Use symptoms to choose the next test
The mod never appears in the Mods menu
Check Steam’s download status, restart Steam, and launch DST again. If the item is still absent, unsubscribe and resubscribe to one mod after confirming that other Workshop content is visible. Do not begin by editing server files; the game cannot enable an item it has not installed locally.
The mod appears but has no effect
Check its scope. For a hosted world, enable a server/world mod through Host Game → Create New World → Mods. For a personal client feature, enable the client mod in the player’s client list. For a dedicated server, confirm installation through dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua and activation through the relevant modoverrides.lua.

The mod works in a hosted game but not on a dedicated server
Test the dedicated server without any mods, then add the mod back incrementally. This result usually means the dedicated server lacks the Workshop files, has a different configuration, or is being asked to run a client-only mod. A successful hosted test does not validate the dedicated-server setup.
The server stops starting after a mod update
Return to the vanilla baseline. If vanilla starts, add mods back individually and identify the update that reintroduced the failure. Check the mod author’s current Workshop notes before restoring it. If vanilla also fails, gather client_log.txt and report the issue through Klei’s bug-reporting channel.
Only one shard is broken
Compare that shard’s world override and installed mod set with the working shard. Correct the inconsistency, then restart the cluster. If the failure persists, test the affected shard without mods so you can distinguish a shard configuration error from a broader server problem.
Common mistakes that prolong troubleshooting
- Confusing subscription with activation: Workshop subscription downloads a mod; it does not automatically enable the correct client or server scope in every world.
- Testing only in a hosted game: A host can have files and permissions that the dedicated server does not.
- Deleting files without unsubscribing: Steam may immediately restore the same problematic download.
- Restoring every mod at once: You lose the information about which item causes the failure.
- Changing both shards differently: Inconsistent Master and Caves settings make a cluster difficult to diagnose and can create cross-shard behavior differences.
- Running with an unexplained numeric Workshop name: Treat
workshop-xxxxxxxas an access or permissions problem and correct that before attempting compatibility fixes. - Leaving security software disabled: Use its documented allow controls instead of removing protection permanently.
A repeatable recovery sequence
For most cases, use this order and stop when the failure is resolved:
- Verify the Workshop subscription and completed Steam download.
- Confirm visibility in DST’s Mods menu.
- Decide whether the feature requires a client mod or a server/world mod.
- Enable it in the correct hosted-world screen or dedicated-server configuration.
- If files look damaged or the entry is shown as
workshop-xxxxxxx, correct Windows and security-software access and perform a full unsubscribe, local-file removal, and resubscribe reset. - For a dedicated server, establish a no-mod startup, then re-enable mods incrementally.
- For a cluster, align Master and Caves installation and
modoverrides.luasettings. - If an unmodded server still fails, preserve
client_log.txtand submit the issue to Klei rather than continuing to rotate mods.
Klei’s support material was updated or crawled during 2025–2026, while Workshop projects can change at any time. Treat the game’s current menus and each mod author’s current compatibility notes as the final check when an older setup behaves differently.
