Don’t Starve Together does not currently have confirmed crossplay between PC and consoles. Third-party guides available as of 14 October 2026 report that Steam players on Windows, macOS and Linux share a PC multiplayer pool, while PlayStation, Xbox and Switch players remain in separate platform groups. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are reported to share a PlayStation pool, and Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud are reported to share an Xbox pool. Klei’s own current crossplay documentation was not available to verify those reports, so treat the status as changeable rather than an official permanent policy.
The current crossplay answer
If you are deciding where to buy Don’t Starve Together so you can play with a specific friend, use this rule: you generally need to be in the same platform pool. A Steam player cannot presently be assumed to join a friend on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch. A PlayStation player can generally play with another PlayStation player, and an Xbox player with another Xbox player, but those console pools are reported to remain separate from one another and from PC.
This is a multiplayer-platform limitation, not a statement about whether the game supports online co-op in general. Don’t Starve Together is built around online cooperative worlds; the issue is whether accounts on different platform networks can enter the same world. Reports summarized here were current on 14 October 2026 and come from third-party guides rather than a retrieved Klei store page, support article or announcement.

“No” in the PC/Steam column means that current reports do not show a supported cross-network connection. It does not mean the platform cannot play online with users on the same platform pool.

How to play together when you are in the same pool
Crossplay is not a setting you can enable from the title screen. First establish that everyone is in the same pool, then use the game’s ordinary online-world flow.
- Confirm the platform family. Ask each player whether they are on Steam PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. Windows, macOS and Linux count as the same Steam group; PlayStation 4 and 5 and the listed Xbox generations are reported as their respective console groups.
- Update the game. Have every player install the current update for that platform. Different versions can prevent invitations even when the platform pool is compatible.
- Sign in to the platform account. Steam, PlayStation Network, Xbox and Nintendo accounts handle the platform-side identity used for online play. Use the account that owns the game and has multiplayer access on that platform.
- Have one player create or load a world. Select the normal cooperative online option, configure the world, and wait until it is available for friends.
- Invite from the correct layer. Use the in-game friend or invite control when available, or the platform’s friend invite if the game exposes one. Search for the host’s platform username, not an account on an unrelated network.
- Join the host’s world. The guest should accept the invitation or select the host’s listed world. If the world does not appear, verify the platform pool and game version before changing network settings.
Menu names can vary by platform and update. The important decision is made before hosting: everyone must belong to the same reported pool. No console setting, NAT change or private server is documented here as a supported bridge between PC and console networks.

PC crossplay: what “PC” means here
The reported PC compatibility is specifically the Steam player pool. Steam users on Windows, macOS and Linux are treated as PC players for multiplayer purposes, so a Windows player can join a Mac or Linux friend through the same Steam-based service. This is different from crossplay between Steam and a console storefront.

If one friend owns the game through a non-Steam PC distribution channel, do not assume it belongs to the same pool. The available reports identify Steam, Windows, Mac and Linux; they do not establish a universal “all PC launchers” policy. Check the exact store edition and account system before buying for a group.
PlayStation, Xbox and Switch groups
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Digest reports indicate that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 share one PlayStation multiplayer pool. A PS4 owner should therefore be able to play with a PS5 owner under the same reported platform grouping, subject to the installed edition, account permissions and compatible updates. This is intra-PlayStation compatibility, not PC–PlayStation crossplay.
The console edition was reported as reaching PS5 in October 2025. Two news or syndication pages carried that report, but their publication dates and an official Klei announcement were not independently verified. Treat PS5 availability as a useful buying lead that should be checked in the current PlayStation Store listing before purchase.

Xbox One, Series X|S and Xbox Cloud
One platform digest groups Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud into a single Xbox pool. That means the reported compatibility is between Xbox generations and the listed Xbox cloud service, not between Xbox and PC players on Steam. Cloud catalog availability can change separately from the game’s multiplayer architecture, so verify that the title is currently offered to your account and region.
Nintendo Switch
Switch is repeatedly listed separately from PC and the other consoles, so it should be treated as a Switch-only multiplayer group unless an official update says otherwise. The Switch conclusion is an inference from separate-platform listings rather than a directly retrieved Klei statement. If your group includes a Switch owner, make the Switch purchase only if the group can play together within that platform.
Crossplay is different from cross-progression
A game can allow players on two platforms into one world without synchronizing their saves, characters or unlocks. For Don’t Starve Together, current reports do not verify whether worlds, cosmetic unlocks, account progression or other entitlements transfer between PC and console, or between different console families.

- Cross-save: whether a saved world or character can be continued on another platform.

Do not buy a second copy expecting your existing progress to appear automatically. Before switching platforms, check the current Klei support or account documentation for the exact edition, region and entitlement rules; those details were not established by the available reports.

Search results contain several claims that do not fit the newer platform picture.
- A guide dated 2023 reportedly described PC–Xbox crossplay as working. Newer digests list that connection as unsupported, so the older guide should be treated as outdated.
- Some September 2025 reporting described a PS5 release alongside full PC and Xbox crossplay. The PS5 release was reported, but the crossplay portion was not confirmed by an official Klei source.
- Mobile coverage is contradictory. One digest says a mobile port arrived in July 2026, while another says there is no mobile multiplayer release. There is not enough verified information to include mobile in a crossplay plan.
- A digest says a Shared Unlocks FAQ still described full crossplay as a goal. A goal or roadmap statement is not proof that the feature shipped.
Versions, store listings and platform policies can change. A page that says “cross-platform” may be using the term loosely for multiple console generations, or it may be describing an announced feature rather than a live service.

Choosing a platform for a friend group

How to verify before you spend money
- Write down every player’s exact platform and store edition, including whether “PC” means Steam.
- Check the game’s current store listing for explicit wording such as “cross-platform multiplayer,” not merely “online co-op.”
- Check Klei’s current support pages, forum announcements and patch notes for a dated crossplay change.
- Confirm the feature applies to your region, generation and edition. A PS5 launch, for example, does not by itself prove PC crossplay.
- Ask whether the statement covers multiplayer, saves, progression or unlocks; these are separate capabilities.
- If the listing is ambiguous, buy for the platform your group already shares rather than relying on an undated guide.
What is still unknown
The available evidence does not establish a definitive Klei policy page for crossplay, the exact Switch implementation, mobile multiplayer availability, or the scope of cross-progression and shared unlocks. It also does not provide a player-count statistic or a verified quotation from a Klei representative. Those gaps matter because crossplay is a live-service feature that can be added, withdrawn or limited by edition.
For a purchase decision on 14 October 2026, the practical answer is therefore conservative: Steam PC players can play with Steam PC players; PlayStation players with PlayStation players; Xbox players with Xbox players; and Switch players should plan to stay with Switch players. Do not promise a mixed-platform session unless the current official listing explicitly confirms it.
