There is no universally best Don’t Starve Together character. The right survivor depends on your world stage, team composition and comfort with each character’s trade-offs. Wilson is the safest learner, Wendy is unusually forgiving in early combat, Wolfgang and Wanda deliver exceptional damage when you manage their demanding systems, and Wortox, Winona and Wickerbottom can change what an entire co-op team is capable of.
The current roster reference contains 19 playable survivor forms. Each has a distinct perk package, downside profile and resource economy, so choosing well means matching a role to the way you actually play rather than following a permanent tier list.
What the characters are in Don’t Starve Together
Don’t Starve Together is Klei Entertainment’s standalone multiplayer expansion to Don’t Starve, built around fighting, farming, building and exploration in The Constant. Steam lists Klei as both developer and publisher and gives the game a release date of 21 April 2016. Survivors share the same hostile world, but their rules for health, hunger, sanity, combat, crafting and factions can be radically different.
The 19-form count comes from a current fan-made character compendium accessed in 2026. Because that page is unofficial and perk wording can change with patches, use the descriptions below as playstyle guidance rather than immutable numerical statistics. Check the in-game character screen and Klei update notes when a decision depends on an exact damage value, cooldown or threshold.

Character-by-character perks and playstyles
Wilson: the baseline scientist
Wilson is the reference point for learning survival fundamentals. His beard provides insulation and can be shaved for beefalo wool, while he carries no major built-in downside. He does not solve a particular late-game problem for the team, but that neutrality is valuable: you can learn hunger, sanity, combat timing, farming and seasonal preparation without also managing a special meter or faction. Choose Wilson when you are new, when a group needs a flexible filler, or when you want to evaluate a world before committing to a specialist.
Willow: fire, light and Bernie
Willow resists fire, can obtain free lighting and uses Bernie for light and anti-shadow utility. Those tools make dark caves and shadow pressure less intimidating. Her opposing pressure is environmental: cold and darkness are especially uncomfortable for her sanity management. She suits players who enjoy deliberately placing fires, carrying warm clothing and using a companion fighter rather than relying only on direct weapon damage.
Wolfgang: high output tied to hunger
Wolfgang reaches Mighty form when well fed, gaining higher damage, health and attack speed. That makes him one of the clearest boss-fighting choices. His hunger drains quickly, however, and his Wimpy form is fragile, so a Wolfgang player must maintain a dependable food pipeline and avoid entering major fights while underfed. He rewards planning more than improvisation.
Wendy: Abigail as a forgiving combat partner
Wendy’s sister Abigail can handle much of the fighting, particularly against groups of weaker creatures, while Wendy herself deals less personal damage. Reviving Abigail requires Mourning Glory, so flower collection and ghost management are part of the loop. Beginners often find Wendy safer because Abigail can clear threats while the player concentrates on positioning, kiting and gathering.

WX-78: a machine that scales through gears
WX-78 starts weaker but can consume gears to permanently improve health, hunger and sanity. Lightning provides movement and light benefits, while rain hurts the machine, making weather planning important. Once upgraded, WX-78 can be customized through circuits into a powerful generalist or specialist. The character is strongest for players who enjoy a slower opening followed by deliberate permanent progression.
Wickerbottom: books and advanced preparation
Wickerbottom’s tomes can induce sleep, accelerate plant growth and create other powerful effects. She can also prototype many recipes without first standing at the usual science station, which accelerates a team’s early technology. She cannot sleep and needs fresh food, so she cannot use ordinary beds as a reset button and must plan sanity and spoilage carefully. In organized groups, a prepared Wickerbottom can turn a single book use into a large team advantage.
Woodie: choose a form for the job
Woodie’s axe Lucy never wears out. His transformations provide three different tools: Werebeaver for gathering, Weremoose for fighting and Weregoose for fast travel. Each form drains sanity and restricts crafting, so transformation is a task decision rather than a permanent stance. Gather materials as Werebeaver, handle a dangerous encounter as Weremoose, then return to normal before you need to build or manage inventory.
Wes: an intentional challenge
Wes is designed for veterans who want a self-imposed handicap. Balloons are his principal special tool, but his health, hunger, sanity and damage penalties make ordinary mistakes more expensive. He is not a sensible recommendation for a first run or a team that needs reliable output. Pick him when the challenge itself is the objective and your group is willing to compensate for reduced efficiency.

Maxwell: shadow assistants at a personal cost
Maxwell uses Codex Umbra to summon shadow workers and duelists. The assistants can gather materials or fight while one player handles exploration and logistics. Summoning consumes sanity and his low health makes direct trading dangerous, so distance, armor and resource control matter. Maxwell excels when you can keep minions productive without letting your own sanity economy collapse.
Wigfrid: combat healing with a meat-only diet
Wigfrid begins with battle equipment, heals health and sanity through combat, and can craft Battle Songs that support teammates. Her central restriction is food: she eats meat only. A camp that can reliably produce meat makes her durable and efficient; a vegetarian-focused food plan makes her awkward. She is a natural front-line pick for teams that expect frequent fights.

Webber can befriend spiders, establish Spiderdens and grow a colony that supplies silk, glands and monster meat. His faction can create a renewable combat and production network, but pigs and other villagers are hostile to him. Base location and diplomacy therefore matter more than they do for most survivors. He is strongest when the team is prepared to live with a monster-aligned settlement rather than near friendly pig infrastructure.
Winona: engineering for bases and boss arenas
Winona works faster and can build generators, catapults, spotlights and sewing tape. These structures improve a defended base or a prepared boss arena, but they consume resources and require setup time. Her value is highest in a settled world where the group can gather components and fight near engineered defenses; she is less distinctive during a rushed nomadic opening.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Warly: the team’s chef
Warly carries a Portable Crock Pot and has exclusive recipes that grant team buffs. His cooking can be decisive before bosses or long expeditions, provided someone plans ingredients and distribution. Repeating the same dishes creates hunger and sanity penalties, so a Warly group must rotate recipes rather than mass-producing one convenient meal. He suits players who enjoy preparation and coordinated schedules.
Wortox: souls for healing and movement
Wortox collects souls that heal allies and enable short or long teleports. That gives a co-op team emergency recovery and rapid repositioning unavailable to ordinary food users. Food restores only half as much for him, and soul storage is capped, so he must balance harvesting, spending and carrying capacity. He is an exceptional support character when teammates communicate and a demanding solo character when supplies are uncertain.
Wormwood: direct planting and living equipment
Wormwood plants directly from inventory, gains sanity around growing plants and crafts gear made from living plants. He fits farming, gathering and rapid landscape development. Food does not heal him, and fire is especially dangerous, so ordinary emergency meals and campfires cannot be treated as universal recovery tools. Pair him with a reliable healer or a team that can protect a carefully managed garden.
Wurt: build a Merm faction
Wurt recruits Merms and can crown a Merm King, producing major faction buffs after substantial preparation. She is vegetarian and pigs are hostile, creating the opposite social pattern from a pig-centered settlement. Her early setup is expensive and vulnerable, but a developed Merm base can provide strong late-game organization and combat power. Choose Wurt when the group is willing to invest in a faction rather than seeking immediate personal strength.

Walter: ranged scouting with Woby
Walter uses a slingshot and Woby for early ranged play, storage and mounting. Darkness does not reduce his sanity, which helps during exploration, but taking damage does, so getting hit repeatedly undermines his mental state. He is a good fit for players who prefer distance, scouting and mobility over standing in melee range.
Wanda: time as both health and damage
Wanda’s age replaces a normal health bar. Watches can heal, teleport and enable very high damage, but she cannot use ordinary healing and dies at maximum age. Every fight therefore becomes a timing and route-planning problem: keep the right watch available, control damage taken and leave room to recover before the age limit becomes critical. Experienced players can exploit her power; newcomers usually find her unforgiving.

Wonkey: an emergent cursed travel form
Wonkey is not a normal character-selection option. The form is triggered by collecting ten Accursed Trinkets from Moon Quay. It improves sprinting and changes faction relations, but disables the original character’s special abilities. Treat it as a temporary, situational transformation for travel and experimentation, not as a replacement for choosing a survivor at world creation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for solo play
- Learning the game: Start with Wilson for the clearest view of ordinary survival systems, or Wendy if early combat is your main barrier.
- Reliable fighting: Choose Wolfgang for managed high damage, Wigfrid for combat sustain, or Walter if you prefer ranged attacks.
- Exploration and mobility: Consider Woodie’s Weregoose utility, Wortox teleportation or Woby’s storage and mounting with Walter.
- Building a self-sufficient base: Winona rewards engineering, Wickerbottom accelerates technology, Wormwood supports planting and Webber can create a spider production network.
- High-risk mastery: Wanda, Maxwell and Wes provide the largest payoff for players who already understand sanity, food and combat systems.
How characters improve a co-op team
Team selection should cover missing capabilities instead of stacking identical damage dealers.
- Recovery: Wortox can heal allies with souls; Wigfrid sustains herself through combat; Wendy reduces the amount of direct fighting others must do.
- Infrastructure: Winona supplies engineered defenses, Wickerbottom supplies books and rapid prototyping, and Warly supplies food buffs.
- Factions: Webber and Wurt can build powerful but socially incompatible settlements. Agree on the faction plan before placing a permanent base.
- Boss preparation: Wolfgang supplies damage, Warly supplies coordinated recipes, Winona supplies arena structures and Wickerbottom can use books for large-scale effects.
- Safety net: Wilson or Wendy can fill gaps without imposing a severe food, weather or faction restriction on the rest of the group.
A practical decision framework
Before selecting a survivor, rate each candidate on seven questions:
- Role: Does the character solve the problem your world or team actually has?
- Resource burden: Can you consistently supply meat, fresh food, gears, souls, ingredients or engineering materials?
- Recovery: What happens after a mistake? Ordinary healing, combat healing, souls and watches have very different failure modes.
- Setup time: Is the payoff immediate, or does it require a colony, books, circuits, a Merm King or an engineered arena?
- Mechanical complexity: Are you comfortable tracking transformations, recipes, age, sanity or capped resources?
- World compatibility: Will rain, cold, fire, pigs, villagers or seasonal conditions directly counter the character?
- Team overlap: Does another survivor already provide the same benefit while covering an unmet need?
This framework is more reliable than a universal tier list: a high-damage survivor can be a liability without food, while a support survivor can be the strongest choice when the team lacks healing, mobility or infrastructure.
