Godlike.Host offers hosted Don't Starve Together servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The best Don’t Starve Together base is usually not at a single landmark. For most worlds, choose flat, open ground on the border between several biomes, close enough to reach three or four resource areas on foot. Keep the Fire Pit and cooking stations in a central survival zone, place workshops and storage in separate, expandable sections, and build a Lightning Rod in the middle as soon as practical.
Your character, team size, preferred travel methods and tolerance for seasonal danger can change that answer. A Pig King, wormhole, cave entrance, Beefalo herd or Oasis Desert can make an excellent neighbour, but none compensates for a cramped site that cannot accommodate future farms, pens and defensive structures.
What makes a good DST base location?
Evaluate a prospective site before placing any permanent structure. A strong location balances access, safety and usable building area rather than maximizing one resource. Walk the surrounding map, mark nearby set pieces and imagine where the base will expand after the first winter.
| Factor | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Biome access | Short walking routes to at least three or four different biomes | Reduces travel time for grass, twigs, wood, stone, food and seasonal resources. |
| Set pieces | Pig King, wormholes, cave entrance, Oasis Desert or Beefalo within practical reach | Provides special resources, transport options or seasonal advantages without consuming your building footprint. |
| Space | Broad, flat, open ground with room beyond the starter structures | Allows organized zones, farms, animal pens, roads, walls and later expansion. |
| Season fit | Manageable wildfire and overheating risk in summer, plus a safe winter route to fuel and food | A convenient summer location can become dangerous if it leaves structures exposed to fire or makes winter resupply difficult. |
| Early-game convenience | Reliable access to Beefalo, the Pig King or another nearby source of food and materials | Makes the first days safer while you gather the resources for a permanent layout. |
There is no universally perfect coordinate. A mobile character may value a nearby wormhole more than a large farm district, while a resource-heavy multiplayer group may accept a longer walk in exchange for a huge clearing. Treat the recommendations below as a decision framework, not a fixed map rule.

Why biome borders are the safest default
A border position gives you several resource zones without forcing the base into a dense, obstructed biome. The commonly recommended example is the grassland/forest border: grassland usually supplies open construction space, while the adjoining forest provides wood and a direct route to other areas. New players benefit because they can reach different materials without committing to a long expedition.
Before settling, walk in each direction from the candidate clearing. You want multiple useful biomes within a comfortable round trip, not merely a border tile that touches one corner of another biome. Check that roads, rivers, rocky patches or hostile set pieces do not turn a visually short route into a dangerous detour.

When a border site is not the right choice
- A character or team that relies on a specific biome may prefer to live nearer that resource and travel elsewhere through a wormhole.
- A group that plans a summer relocation can use a compact temporary camp and reserve the permanent base for a safer, more central season.
- If the border contains too little flat ground, move a short distance into the open area rather than building directly on the biome transition.
Landmarks worth having near your base
Pig King
The Pig King is a useful neighbour for early-game progression and recurring access to gold through item exchanges. A base near him can also make pig-related food and meat routines convenient. Do not build so close that your storage, farms or pathways crowd the village; leave a clear buffer for movement and for any structures you want to add later.
Wormholes
A wormhole can turn an otherwise remote resource region into a practical part of your supply network. Test both ends before committing: note where each exit leads, whether either side is surrounded by enemies, and whether the route remains useful for the characters in your team. Keep the base on the safer, roomier side rather than occupying the landing area itself.
Cave entrances
A cave entrance offers a direct transition for players who intend to use the caves regularly. One community discussion also describes daylight reaching through the ceiling at a cave-entrance base, making farming, including bees, possible in that particular setup. Treat that as community-level advice rather than a guaranteed property of every entrance or current patch. Verify the lighting and farm behavior in your world before making it the foundation of the plan.
Oasis Desert
The Oasis is a common summer-base choice because the area provides natural protection from burning during summer. It can be a strong seasonal refuge, especially when the rest of the world has a high wildfire risk. The trade-off is that desert terrain may offer less comfortable space for a large, permanent production district. Many groups use the Oasis as a summer camp while keeping a broader central base elsewhere.
Beefalo
Beefalo close to the base can simplify early food, manure and transportation-related routines. Keep animal pens and everyday foot traffic separate from the main cooking and storage paths. A nearby herd is helpful; placing the entire base in the herd’s movement area is not.
Locations to avoid for the main base
Dense forest
Dense forest can look rich in wood but often leaves too little uninterrupted ground for Crock Pots, farms, chests and defensive lines. Clearing trees creates work and can produce awkward pockets that undermine a clean layout. Use forest for harvesting and place the base in an adjacent clearing whenever possible.
Swamp
Swamps combine poor construction space with environmental threats and difficult movement. A swamp-edge outpost can be useful for gathering, but a permanent central base there usually forces every routine through hazards and narrow paths.

Resource patches that consume your expansion area
Do not reserve every flat tile for the starter camp and then discover there is no room for farms, animal pens or a dock. A location can be technically buildable yet strategically bad if your planned structures must be scattered across several screens.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsScout and claim a site: a practical procedure
- Survive the opening days first. Place only temporary essentials while collecting grass, twigs, food and basic tools. Avoid locking the team into the first clearing that looks convenient.
- Map the neighbourhood. Walk outward and record nearby biomes, roads, wormholes, caves, Pig King, Beefalo and the Oasis. Check both the distance and the safety of each route.
- Measure usable space. Stand in the proposed centre and look for a broad, open area that can hold the survival core, workshop, kitchen, storage, farms and defensive features with walking lanes between them.
- Check seasonal exposure. Identify places where summer fire risk or winter fuel and food routes could become a problem. Decide whether a separate Oasis camp is worthwhile.
- Mark the centre. Put down a temporary sign, torch or other harmless marker before constructing expensive machines. Walk around the marker and sketch the zones mentally or with in-game paths.
- Place the first permanent structures. Build the Fire Pit and Alchemy Engine, then establish the kitchen and storage positions while the ground is still mostly empty.
- Install lightning protection early. Build a Lightning Rod in the centre of the base as soon as resources allow. It protects the area you are investing in and prevents a later remodel caused by a randomly struck structure.
- Reserve expansion corridors. Leave open strips for farms, pens, processing stations and a possible dock instead of filling every gap with chests or decorative walls.
A layout that remains usable as the world grows
Divide the base into zones with a clear centre and predictable routes. The purpose is not symmetry for its own sake; it is to reduce repeated walking and keep dangerous or flammable activities away from the structures you use constantly.
1. Central survival zone
Put the Fire Pit at the centre of the daily activity area. Cooking and emergency nighttime actions should be possible without crossing the entire base. Keep enough open space around the pit for players to stand, refuel and move toward the kitchen.
The central zone is also the logical location for the Lightning Rod. The 2026 Steam guide recommends building one there immediately; doing so protects the most valuable concentration of structures rather than a remote corner.
2. Kitchen cluster
Group Crock Pots, Ice Boxes and Drying Racks so ingredients, fuel and finished food move through one compact route. A Salt Box can join this cluster when available. One community layout also places a Bird Cage in the kitchen and surrounds the area with food farms, allowing meat, eggs and produce to be processed without a long trip.
Keep the kitchen close enough to the Fire Pit for winter and night use, but do not block the central walking lanes with farms or chests. Leave a gap that lets several players cook at once.
3. Workshop and science district
Place the Alchemy Engine, Shadow Manipulator and Think Tank together in one workshop district, with Storage Chests and resource farms around—but not directly on top of—the working area. Keeping stations in one or two central crafting locations makes recipes easier to find and reduces the chance that a player forgets where a machine was placed.
Separate high-volume resource storage from the crafting machines. A dedicated, labeled chest section is easier to expand and less likely to become an obstacle course when the team returns from a long expedition.
4. Food and production area
Use the outer ring for farms, animal pens and processing structures. This area can grow without forcing a rebuild of the survival core. Put manure-dependent or animal-related operations on the side closest to their resource routes, while keeping ordinary player traffic away from gates and pen entrances.

5. Storage section
Build storage in a predictable block rather than scattering individual chests beside every machine. Reserve separate rows or pockets for building materials, food ingredients, monster drops, seasonal items and tools. The exact labels are up to your team, but the categories should remain stable so a returning player can unload quickly.
6. Defensive entrance
For a defensive “circle” concept, place tooth traps at the principal entrance and use stone walls around the remainder of the perimeter. The entrance should be obvious and wide enough for players to retreat through. Walls are optional for a low-risk, mobile camp; they become more valuable when the base contains expensive farms, pens and machines.
Walls can also follow corners or roads for visual variety, as one community layout demonstrates, but decoration should never consume the lanes needed for evacuation or expansion.
7. Future docks and specialist areas
Reserve a separate shoreline or dock district if your group expects to build there. Do not let early chests and farms occupy the only practical waterfront. Likewise, leave a distinct footprint for specialist structures introduced by later updates so they do not have to be forced into the kitchen or workshop.

Essential structures and a sensible build order
The early objective is a functioning survival loop, not a finished city. Build in stages so each addition solves an immediate problem while preserving the final layout.
| Stage | Structures | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| First permanent core | Fire Pit and Alchemy Engine | Reliable nighttime safety and access to basic crafting. |
| Food loop | Crock Pots and Ice Box | Turns gathered ingredients into dependable meals and preserves supplies. |
| Organization | Storage Chests | Keeps materials out of walkways and makes group inventories manageable. |
| Protein and eggs | Pig Houses and Bird Cage | Supports meat production and egg-based recipes when your strategy uses them. |
| Summer protection | Endothermic Fire Pit and Ice Flingomatic | Provides cooling and helps protect structures from summer fire once the season requires it. |
| Safety upgrade | Lightning Rod | Protects the central investment from lightning; place it centrally and early. |
Build the Ice Flingomatic before summer threats become urgent, not after the first fire. Its exact coverage and fuel needs should be considered when you choose which farms and flammable structures occupy the protected zone. The Endothermic Fire Pit belongs where players can reach it quickly during hot weather, while the ordinary Fire Pit remains the everyday centre.
Seasonal planning for a permanent or split base
Spring
Use spring to finish the basic grid, expand food production and check whether rain, lightning or flooding changes how players move through the site. Keep the Lightning Rod active in the centre and avoid blocking the most direct routes with new decorative structures.
Summer
Summer is the season that most often changes the location decision. A central base needs fire protection, cooling and an orderly fuel plan. The Oasis is a common alternative because it offers natural protection from burning. If you relocate, keep the summer camp compact: a Fire Pit, essential food processing, cooling and a small amount of storage are easier to defend than a second full city.
Autumn
Autumn is the best time to review the layout after the first major expansion. Move temporary chests into the storage section, finish walls or traps if you need them and stock the kitchen before winter travel becomes inconvenient.

Winter
Winter planning is mostly about fuel, food and travel distance. Keep the Fire Pit and kitchen together, place fuel storage where it can be reached safely and make sure the route to nearby resources is not blocked by pens or walls. A beautiful but remote base becomes expensive when every resupply trip consumes warmth and daylight.
Patch and version considerations for 2026 worlds
Placement advice can change when structures or building rules change, so check the live patch notes for the edition and platform you play. The following details were reported in 2026 community and support references and should be treated with their stated limitations.
Update 1.25.0 and Pearl structures
A January 2026 Klei forum post described structures craftable for Pearl after certain conditions are met: the Tea Shop, Hot Spring, Large Drying Rack, Light Post and Combriner. Several Salt Crystal items are crafted at the Combriner. If your world uses these additions, reserve a specialist or utility district instead of squeezing them between Crock Pots and chests.

The 2026 version history on the community Don’t Starve Wiki lists a June 25, 2026 fix for Golf structure rotations and a July 2, 2026 fix affecting coals and Mini-Golf over Docks. Those notes are community-maintained and do not establish that every platform received identical behavior at the same time. Confirm the current build before designing a dock or golf area around a particular rotation.
From Beyond structures and grid alignment
The Wiki’s From Beyond page lists the Perennial Altar, Shallow Grave and Portable Campfire. It also describes a settings option to align building to the grid, but the page does not give a shipped date for that option. If grid alignment is available in your build, it can help make rows of chests, farms and walls cleaner; if it is absent, use temporary markers and deliberate spacing instead.
Platform-specific patch notes
The Playdigious help center lists 2026 patch notes through version 2.2.0 dated October 6, 2026, but the cited summary does not mention base structures. Mobile and other platform editions can differ from the build used by a desktop guide, so verify structure availability and placement behavior in the live notes for your platform.

Building in the first attractive clearing
Symptom: the base has no room for farms or a workshop after the first winter. Fix: use temporary structures while scouting, then move the permanent core to a larger clearing. A short relocation early is cheaper than rebuilding a crowded city later.
Putting every station around the Fire Pit
Symptom: players collide around a dense centre and storage spills into paths. Fix: keep only the survival and kitchen essentials in the central zone; move science machines and bulk chests into their own blocks.
Scattering chests wherever resources are gathered
Symptom: nobody knows where to unload, and the base becomes a maze. Fix: maintain one labeled storage section and use temporary field chests only during expeditions.

Placing farms or pens without expansion lanes
Symptom: new plots force a wall, road or workshop to move. Fix: reserve an outer production ring and leave a corridor between it and the core.
Ignoring summer fire coverage
Symptom: the first wildfire destroys the most expensive cluster. Fix: plan the Ice Flingomatic’s protected area before planting dense farms or placing flammable structures, and consider the Oasis for a seasonal camp.

Three practical layout patterns
Compact central hub
Use this for a small group or a world where travel matters more than decoration. Put the Fire Pit, Crock Pots and Ice Boxes in the centre, place the workshop and labeled storage immediately outside, and keep farms and pens in one expandable outer block. It minimizes walking while leaving a single direction open for future growth.
Defended circle
Use a central survival and kitchen area, surround the production and storage districts with stone walls, and concentrate tooth traps at one controlled entrance. This pattern is easier to defend than several disconnected wall segments, but it needs a wide gate and an external expansion area.
Seasonal twin camps
Keep the permanent workshop and most storage at a central border location, then establish a small Oasis summer camp with cooling, cooking and emergency supplies. This pattern costs more resources and travel time, but it avoids forcing the entire permanent base to optimize for one season.

A quick decision checklist
- Can you reach three or four useful biomes without an exhausting or dangerous walk?
- Is there enough flat, open ground for the survival core, kitchen, workshop, storage, farms and pens?
- Are the Pig King, a wormhole, cave entrance, Oasis or Beefalo close enough to help without occupying the build area?
- Have you checked summer fire exposure and winter fuel and food routes?
- Is the Fire Pit central, with Crock Pots, Ice Boxes and Drying Racks close together?
- Are science machines grouped and storage chests kept in a predictable separate section?
- Did you reserve room for a Lightning Rod, Ice Flingomatic, walls, traps and later structures?
- Could several players move through the base at night without blocking one another?
Bottom line: choose flexibility over a “perfect” landmark
For most players, the strongest answer to “where should I put my base in Don’t Starve Together?” is an open grassland/forest-border clearing within walking distance of several biomes, with useful landmarks nearby but not inside the footprint. Build a central Fire Pit and kitchen, add an early Lightning Rod, separate the workshop and storage, and keep the outer ring available for farms, pens, defenses and expansion. Move toward an Oasis for summer protection or use a seasonal camp when wildfire risk matters more than a single permanent location.
Recheck the live patch notes for your platform before relying on newer structures, grid alignment or dock behavior. The layout principle remains stable even when individual recipes or building rules change: preserve open ground, shorten daily routes and make every new zone fit the base you intend to have next season.
