As of the FCC’s September 18, 2026 conditional-approval roster, TP-Link was not listed among the approved router entries. That makes a new foreign-produced TP-Link router difficult to introduce in the United States under the FCC’s current rule unless it receives the required approval. This is not a permanent ban, and previously authorized models are treated differently.
What the FCC rule means for new TP-Link routers
On March 23, 2026, the FCC added routers produced in foreign countries to its Covered List, with an exception for routers granted Conditional Approval by the Department of War or the Department of Homeland Security. The FCC said the action followed an interagency National Security Determination. Read the FCC notice, DA 26-278.
The rule applies broadly to foreign-produced routers; it is not a TP-Link-only measure. For a newly introduced model, the key questions are whether it falls within the covered class and whether it has the required conditional approval. The rule concerns authorization of new equipment, not an order to remove every previously authorized router from sale or service.

Previously authorized models are distinct from new models subject to the Covered List restriction. The FCC’s September 18, 2026 appendix lists conditional approvals for router families from several manufacturers, but TP-Link does not appear in its router entries. That dated roster supports saying TP-Link was not listed as of September 18; it does not establish that the company can never receive approval or that the roster has not changed since then. See the FCC’s DA 26-996 conditional-approval appendix.
#1 Best Overall
- Coverage up to 2,000 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
- Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
- This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
- Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
- Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports
Netgear Nighthawk and Orbi families, among other products, appear in that appendix. Inclusion is a regulatory status, not an FCC endorsement of security, performance, value, or suitability. Check the FCC’s current record and the exact model’s status before buying; the roster can change.
What existing TP-Link router owners should know
TP-Link said on April 14, 2026, that the FCC action would not affect existing routers and that they would continue to operate with support and updates. The company stated that existing TP-Link routers “remain fully authorized, supported, and will continue receiving regular firmware and security updates.” This is TP-Link’s assurance, not a guarantee that every model will receive updates indefinitely. - WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
In the same statement, TP-Link said it was pursuing Conditional Approval for new products and advancing plans for US-based manufacturing. That describes the company’s intentions at the time; it does not demonstrate that approval was subsequently granted.
Developments to keep in context
On October 7, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that Florida had sued TP-Link over alleged statements about router safety and the company’s ties to China. Those assertions are claims in litigation, not established findings. The lawsuit is separate from the FCC’s Covered List action. Read the report on the lawsuit.

What to check before choosing a router
- For a newly introduced foreign-produced router, verify its status against the FCC’s current Covered List and conditional-approval record rather than relying on a broad headline.
- Confirm the exact model, not just the manufacturer or product family, and check that it is currently authorized for US sale.
- For a router you already own, look up its model-specific firmware and security-update information with the manufacturer.
- Regulatory eligibility answers an authorization question; it does not tell you whether a router fits your Wi-Fi coverage, mesh, port, ISP-compatibility, or budget needs.
