Yes—Amtrak offers free Wi-Fi on select trains and stations, but coverage is not universal. Check Amtrak’s current Wi-Fi service list for your route before you travel. Plan on basic browsing rather than streaming: connection quality depends on cellular coverage and available bandwidth along the route.
Which Amtrak trains have Wi-Fi?
Amtrak lists Wi-Fi on dozens of services, including Acela, Northeast Regional, Pacific Surfliner and many state-supported and long-distance routes. The service is also available at select stations. Some cross-border segments are excluded, so a route appearing on the list does not necessarily mean Wi-Fi is available for every part of the trip.
Amtrak’s FY2025 Grant and Legislative Request says more than 90% of its passengers can connect to the internet through free onboard Wi-Fi. The same request acknowledges that Wi-Fi remains unavailable on certain routes and that speed, reliability and bandwidth are limited. This is a system-level figure, not a guarantee for a particular train or journey.

What can you do with Amtrak Wi-Fi?
Amtrak describes the onboard service as suitable for general browsing, not bandwidth-heavy activity. Its guidance says the network does not support music or video streaming or large downloads. Download entertainment, documents and other large files before boarding if you expect to need them during the trip.
Amtrak explains that “Our onboard Wi-Fi network relies on bandwidth provided by cellular carriers who have towers along our routes.” That limited bandwidth may vary with cellular coverage, terrain and other conditions outside Amtrak’s control. The onboard experience may not match home or office Wi-Fi, and Amtrak does not publish a universal speed guarantee.

How to connect to Amtrak Wi-Fi
- Open your device’s Wi-Fi settings and select Amtrak_WiFi.
- Open a browser or refresh a page to bring up the welcome screen.
- Accept the terms on the welcome screen to connect.
On Capitol Corridor and Gold Runner, Amtrak directs passengers to connect to the YourTrainWiFi network instead. If the welcome screen does not appear, try opening or refreshing a browser after joining the network.
Is Amtrak Wi-Fi secure, and can you use a VPN?
Amtrak calls its onboard connection a public Wi-Fi network and says it is not inherently secure. The current service guidance allows VPN traffic on trains that offer Wi-Fi. A VPN does not make a public network invulnerable, so use security measures appropriate to your activity and avoid treating the connection as private by default.

- Keep bandwidth-heavy tasks for a more reliable connection; onboard Wi-Fi is intended for basic browsing.
- If you are charging several devices, Amtrak’s packing guidance suggests a multi-USB travel adapter as a charging convenience. It does not improve Wi-Fi coverage or speed.
Amtrak’s explanation of onboard Wi-Fi and its connection instructions are on the official Wi-Fi page; its packing recommendations include a travel adapter for charging devices.
