Purchased Xbox or Microsoft gift-card balance does not expire under Microsoft’s current gift-card terms, and official Xbox digital-code terms say there is “NO EXPIRATION DATE OR SERVICE FEES.” Promotional credit is different: it can expire on the deadline stated in the specific offer. You can see promotional expiration dates in your Microsoft account, and Microsoft uses the promotional amount that expires soonest before other eligible balance.
The short answer depends on what kind of credit you have
“Xbox store credit” can mean two different things in your Microsoft account. Money added by redeeming a gift card is non-promotional account balance. Credit granted through a promotion, reward, bundle, compensation offer or similar campaign is promotional balance. Microsoft applies different rules to those categories.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Non-promotional balance | Purchased Xbox or Microsoft gift card, or another ordinary account top-up | Does not expire under Microsoft’s current gift-card terms | Available for eligible purchases after applicable promotional amounts are applied | Not transferable to another person or Microsoft account |
| Promotional balance | Limited-time offer, reward, campaign, bundle or account adjustment identified as promotional | Expires according to the terms of the individual promotion | Microsoft deducts the promotional amount with the nearest expiration date first while it remains valid | Not transferable to another person or Microsoft account |
Microsoft’s published wording is explicit: “Non-promotional account balance doesn’t expire.” It separately says that promotional balance is “subject to expiration as set forth in the terms of the promotion.” Because offers can set different deadlines, the date shown for your account is more reliable than a general rule about promotional credit.

A purchased Xbox or Microsoft gift card adds its full code value to the Microsoft account when redeemed. That resulting non-promotional balance does not expire under the current Microsoft gift-card terms. Official Xbox digital-code terms also state: “NO EXPIRATION DATE OR SERVICE FEES.” In practical terms, you do not have to spend the amount within 30, 90 or 365 days merely because it came from a gift card.

The no-expiration rule concerns the value loaded to the account, not every condition surrounding a code. Gift cards are generally limited by currency and jurisdiction. A code intended for one market or currency may not redeem in another, and Microsoft can impose the restrictions printed with the card or shown at redemption. Check the card’s region before buying or giving it to someone in another country.
What happens when you redeem a code
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the value.
- Redeem the Xbox or Microsoft gift-card code through Microsoft’s or Xbox’s code-redemption page or console interface.
- Confirm the account, currency and code value before completing redemption.
- The full code value is added to that account’s balance, subject to the code’s regional and legal restrictions.
Once redeemed, the value is associated with that account. It cannot normally be moved to a different account later, so redeeming on the wrong account is a serious error to avoid.
Does Xbox promotional credit expire?
Yes, promotional credit can expire. The deadline is controlled by the offer that granted it, rather than by the no-expiration rule for purchased gift-card balance. A promotion may specify a calendar date, a period beginning when the credit is issued, or another condition. The offer’s terms and the expiration information displayed in your Microsoft account govern the amount.

How Microsoft handles several promotional amounts
If your account contains more than one unexpired promotional amount, Microsoft says it deducts the amount with the nearest expiration date before other balance. This ordering gives the oldest-expiring promotion priority and reduces the chance that a valid promotional amount is left unused until its deadline.
That rule does not mean promotional credit is always spent before every other type of value in every transaction. Eligibility, product category, currency and the specific promotion can affect checkout. The account balance view and the amount shown at checkout are the practical indicators of which funds are available.
How to check your Xbox balance and promotional expiration dates
Microsoft says your account can show the current balance and any expiration dates associated with promotional balance. Use the account page rather than relying on an old email, a retailer receipt or memory of when an offer was issued.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used on your Xbox console, PC or Microsoft Store purchase.
- Open the account’s payment, billing or balance area. The exact label can vary by device and Microsoft interface version.
- Review the total balance and expand the details for promotional amounts, if a breakdown is provided.
- Record the expiration date shown next to each promotional amount. If no date is shown for a line identified as non-promotional balance, the published gift-card rule is that it does not expire.
- At checkout, confirm that the expected balance is offered as a payment method and that the purchase uses the intended currency.
Console menus and web labels can change, but the important distinction is the same: look for a promotional expiration date inside the signed-in account. If an offer email states a different deadline, keep the offer’s full terms and contact Microsoft support before the earlier date if the account display appears inconsistent.

What can Xbox or Microsoft account balance buy?
Microsoft Support says redeemed balance can be used for eligible movies, games, in-app purchases and physical goods. It can also be used for an Xbox-related subscription when the subscription and account region support balance payment. The exact products available depend on the storefront, currency, age or family settings, and other checkout requirements.
- Games and add-ons: digital games, downloadable content and other eligible Xbox or Microsoft Store items.
- Movies and entertainment: qualifying films or other video purchases offered through the signed-in store.
- In-app purchases: eligible transactions inside supported apps and games.
- Physical goods: qualifying hardware or merchandise sold through Microsoft’s store in supported regions.
- Subscriptions: an Xbox-related subscription where Microsoft permits account balance as a payment method.
Some transactions may still request another payment method, tax payment, recurring-payment authorization or age verification. A balance can be valid while a particular item is ineligible for that balance, so check the payment choices shown on the final order screen.
Restrictions that can prevent a balance from working
Currency and country rules
Account balance is tied to the currency and marketplace in which it was issued or redeemed. Microsoft’s terms restrict converting the value to another currency. A card purchased for one country may not work on an account configured for another, even when both countries use the same language or sell the same console.
No transfers between accounts
Microsoft’s published terms say account balance is non-transferable. You cannot normally send an existing balance to a friend, combine it with another person’s account, or move it to a second Microsoft account after redemption. If a family member needs credit, buy a code for the correct recipient account rather than redeeming it yourself first.

Account, family and payment settings
Family-safety controls, child-account permissions, store region, taxes and payment-method requirements can change what appears at checkout. These controls do not turn non-promotional balance into expiring credit; they simply determine whether a particular purchase is allowed and how it can be paid.
What happens if you return something bought with balance?
Under the gift-card terms, a returned purchase is generally credited back to the account, subject to applicable law and Microsoft’s restrictions. The refund does not create a transferable cash balance. It normally returns value to the account or payment method designated under the transaction’s refund rules.
Keep the order number and return confirmation until the credit appears. If the original purchase used both account balance and another payment method, Microsoft may divide the refund between those methods. A refund can also take time to process, and a promotional amount may remain governed by its original expiration terms unless Microsoft’s refund decision states otherwise.
Does an unused balance make a Microsoft account expire?
Microsoft’s inactivity policy says an account remains active while it has an unspent balance. That does not make the balance transferable or guarantee that every account service remains available indefinitely. Local unclaimed-property laws can require some unspent gift-card balances to be turned over, or “escheated,” after legally defined periods. Those rules vary by jurisdiction and can apply differently from Microsoft’s ordinary no-expiration statement.

Common problems and the right fix
“My gift-card balance shows an expiration date”
Check whether the dated line is promotional rather than the value from the purchased card. Microsoft’s account view can contain several balances. Compare the amount and description with the original receipt or offer. If the display still appears wrong, save screenshots and the redemption receipt and ask Microsoft support to identify the balance category.
“The code says it is valid, but redemption fails”
Verify that you are signed in to the intended account, that the code has not already been redeemed, and that the account region and code currency match. A code bought for a different market may be unusable on your current account. Do not publish the code in a support forum or send it to an unverified helper.

“My balance is not offered at checkout”
Confirm that the item is sold in your account’s marketplace and that the balance currency matches the store. Review family restrictions, subscription billing requirements and any additional payment requested for tax or recurring charges. Try the purchase from the same account on the web and console; if the amount differs, note the item, region and displayed currency when contacting support.
“Promotional credit disappeared”
Look for the promotion’s deadline and check whether the amount was consumed by an earlier purchase. Microsoft’s nearest-expiration ordering can apply one promotional amount before another. Also verify that you are viewing the same Microsoft account that received the offer; balances are not shared across accounts.
Practical checklist before you buy or redeem credit
- Identify whether the value is a purchased gift card or a promotional award.
- Match the card’s country and currency to the recipient’s Microsoft account.
- Redeem only after selecting the correct account; redeemed value is not transferable.
- Open the account balance view and note every promotional expiration date.
- Spend promotional amounts before their displayed deadlines, starting with the one that expires soonest.
- Keep receipts, offer terms and redemption confirmations until the value is visible and any purchase is complete.
- For returns, retain the order record and verify where the refund is credited.
The governing terms can change, and individual promotions can impose their own conditions. For a current decision, rely on the balance and expiration information displayed in your Microsoft account together with the terms attached to the specific offer or code.
