Yes, Xbox Game Bar recording can reduce game performance, but there is no reliable, universal FPS-loss percentage. Capturing a game uses system resources, and the size of any change depends on the game, capture mode, recording settings, background load and your hardware. A manually started clip and Windows background recording are different conditions, so test the one you actually use rather than relying on a generic number.
Microsoft documents recording with Xbox Game Bar on Windows 10 and Windows 11, including the Win + Alt + R shortcut and the default save location, VideosCaptures. Its instructions are useful for making a controlled comparison: you can identify exactly when capture starts, stop it consistently and find the resulting MP4 file. Microsoft’s recording instructions cover those controls.
What the evidence actually shows
Recording gameplay is not a free operation. The capture process has to read frames, encode them and write a video file, so it can compete with the game and other applications for system resources. That makes a performance change plausible, but it does not establish a fixed cost such as “5 percent FPS” for every PC.
Microsoft says that running an application while gaming uses system resources. However, that statement appears in the company’s Game Assist FAQ and concerns the Game Assist widget, not a measured Xbox Game Bar recording benchmark. It should not be presented as a quantified recording penalty. Microsoft’s wording is: Running any application on your computer while gaming will have some impact on system resource usage, but we’ve optimized the experience as much as possible to be more performant than switching to a browser on your desktop.

An older MSI troubleshooting document lists Windows background recording, also called Xbox Game DVR, among settings to check when addressing poor game performance. The document does not give a universal impact figure, and its revision is dated February 18, 2022. It is useful evidence that background capture deserves a separate test, not proof that every system will lose a particular number of frames. MSI FAQ No. 2424 contains that guidance.
Results from another recorder cannot be substituted for an Xbox Game Bar result. For example, TechSpot reported a slight reduction in its Nvidia App recording tests, but that was a different capture application, test system and workload. It cannot quantify Xbox Game Bar’s cost. TechSpot’s report should be read only as an example of why recorder-specific testing matters.
Manual clips and background recording are not the same test
Many disagreements about Game Bar performance come from treating all capture as one feature. Separate the conditions before drawing a conclusion.

With Game Bar enabled, press Win + Alt + R to start a clip and press the same shortcut again to stop. This tests the period when an active recording is being encoded and saved. It does not test a system that is continuously maintaining a rolling background buffer when no clip has been requested.

Background recording
Windows can keep background capture available so that a recent moment can be saved after it happens. That ongoing activity is a different workload from pressing the shortcut for a short manual clip. If you are troubleshooting a performance problem, test background recording enabled and disabled independently. MSI’s troubleshooting advice specifically identifies this setting as something to consider when game performance is poor.

Keep the game scene, graphics options, display resolution, Windows power mode and other running software the same for all three conditions. If you change several settings at once, you cannot tell which change caused the result.
Why the effect varies from one PC to another
The capture workload is added to whatever the game is already doing. A game that leaves substantial headroom may show no noticeable change, while a title already saturating a CPU, GPU or storage path can become less consistent when recording starts. The same PC can also behave differently in a quiet indoor scene and a busy multiplayer fight.
Recording settings and background activity matter as well. The active capture has to process frames and create a file while the game continues to render. Other overlays, browsers, launchers, updates and monitoring tools can compete for resources at the same time. Because these factors vary, an observation from one game or one recording session cannot be generalized to all games.

Do not assume that a particular encoding path makes the overhead zero. The available evidence supports only the narrower conclusion that capture uses resources and that the observable effect is system-dependent.
How to measure the impact on your own system
A controlled comparison is more informative than an internet percentage or a single impression. Use the following procedure for each game in which recording matters.
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use a built-in benchmark, a fixed route, a saved game position or another sequence that you can reproduce. Avoid comparing a quiet menu with a busy combat section.
- Lock the conditions. Keep resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate cap, display mode, Windows power mode and connected displays unchanged. Close or leave open the same other software each time.
- Record a baseline. Run the scene with Game Bar capture off. Measure more than one run so ordinary game-to-game variation is visible.
- Test background recording separately. Enable the Windows background-recording option, repeat the same scene and record the same measurements. If your question is specifically about background capture, this is the relevant comparison.
- Test an active clip. Turn background recording off if that is the condition you want to isolate, start a clip with Win + Alt + R, repeat the scene while the recording indicator is active, and stop the clip afterward.
- Keep recording options constant. Do not change capture quality, resolution or audio options between runs. Change one capture setting at a time if you are investigating which option matters.
- Measure average FPS and frame-time consistency. Average FPS shows throughput; frame-time behavior reveals stutter that an average can hide. Use the same overlay or benchmark method for every run.
- Repeat and compare. Look for a difference that appears across repeated runs, not a one-off dip. Save notes for each condition, including whether background capture was enabled, whether a manual clip was active and which recording settings were used.

These steps are a testing method, not a published benchmark. A result is meaningful only for the game, settings and PC on which you obtained it. If the difference is smaller than normal run-to-run variation, repeat the test before changing your setup.

No visible difference
If repeated runs show similar average FPS and frame-time behavior with and without capture, recording is not creating a material problem for that workload. That does not prove every game will behave the same way; it means your tested scene has enough headroom or otherwise tolerates the capture workload.

Lower average FPS while a clip is active
A repeatable drop only during manual recording indicates that active capture is affecting this game or system. Test background recording separately before concluding that the always-on buffer is responsible.
More stutter without a large average-FPS change
Frame-time consistency can worsen even when the average looks similar. If the game feels less smooth, examine frame-time behavior and repeat the comparison. A single brief hitch can come from normal game activity, storage work or another background task, so it is not sufficient on its own.
Performance changes only with background recording
That pattern points to the background condition as the useful setting to change first. Disable background capture and retest, then decide whether manually saving occasional clips provides an acceptable compromise.

- Disable background recording first. This isolates the continuously available capture path identified in troubleshooting guidance. Retest the same scene before making other changes.
- Use manual clips when you need them. Press Win + Alt + R only for moments you intend to save. This avoids testing an always-running buffer when your use case requires only occasional clips.
- Remove unrelated variables. Close unnecessary overlays and background programs, then repeat the controlled comparison. Do not attribute an improvement to Game Bar if several applications changed at once.
- Keep the better condition for that game. If background recording causes a repeatable problem but manual clips do not, leave background capture off and use the manual shortcut. If active clips also cause trouble, recording during that workload may require accepting lower smoothness or not recording it.
There is no evidence here for a universal “best” recorder setting, and no basis for promising that hardware encoding eliminates overhead. Make the decision from your own repeated measurements.

Recording controls and saved files
Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 instructions describe the controls needed for a clean test:
- Start or stop a clip: Win + Alt + R.
- Toggle microphone capture: Win + Alt + M.
- Default file location:
VideosCaptures, where the resulting recording is saved as an MP4.
If the shortcut does nothing, confirm that Xbox Game Bar is enabled in Windows before comparing performance. The Microsoft instructions linked above show the supported recording workflow and apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Confirming the shortcut and file location also helps ensure that you tested an actual Game Bar clip rather than an unrelated screen-capture tool.
Common troubleshooting branches
The game slows as soon as Windows starts recording
Repeat the baseline and manual-clip runs in the same scene. If only the active clip changes performance, the capture workload is the relevant difference. Next, test background recording with no manual clip so the two modes are not mixed.

The game is slow even when no clip is active
Test with background recording disabled. If performance returns, background capture is a plausible contributor. If it does not, Game Bar is not isolated by that result; other software, settings or ordinary game variation may be involved.
You cannot reproduce the problem
Use several repeated runs and a busier, repeatable scene. Casual observation is weak evidence because game workloads naturally fluctuate. Record the capture condition and frame-time behavior for each run instead of relying on memory.
You want to compare another recorder
Run the same controlled procedure for that recorder, but keep its result separate. A result from Nvidia App, Snipping Tool, Clipchamp or any other application is not an Xbox Game Bar measurement. Microsoft lists Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar and Clipchamp as screen-recording options in its Steps Recorder deprecation guidance, but that page does not rank them by gaming performance.
Bottom line for FPS and game smoothness
Does Xbox Game Bar reduce FPS while recording? It can, because recording consumes system resources, but the evidence does not support one dependable FPS-loss number. Treat background recording and a manually started clip as separate tests. Use a repeatable scene, keep every other variable fixed, compare average FPS and frame-time consistency across multiple runs, and change the capture mode only after your own measurements show a repeatable effect.
