No. Xbox Cloud Gaming supports many modern Bluetooth gamepads, but Microsoft does not guarantee that every Bluetooth controller will work. Compatibility depends on the exact model, your device and operating system, whether you use an app or browser, the controller’s connection mode, and the game’s input requirements.
An Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth remains the lowest-risk choice. Verified alternatives include selected models from 8BitDo, PowerA, Razer, Sony, SteelSeries and Backbone, with important platform restrictions.
What “Bluetooth compatible” actually means
Bluetooth only describes the wireless link between a controller and a host device. Xbox Cloud Gaming still needs the host operating system and the Xbox app or browser to expose that controller as a supported gamepad. A controller can pair successfully in Bluetooth settings yet fail to appear in a cloud game.
Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 getting-started guide says most games require a wired or wireless gamepad and that a contemporary controller will probably work. Microsoft’s developer guidance is similarly broad: Xbox Cloud Gaming supports many Bluetooth controllers, including Xbox, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Those statements describe broad class support, not a promise that every model, firmware version or generic Bluetooth pad is recognized.

Microsoft Edge’s browser guidance makes the limitation explicit: not all controllers can be used with browser games. Browser support, operating-system updates and Xbox’s verified-controller list can change, so check the current Xbox support information for your device before buying a less common model.
Controllers with documented support
The following models are named in Xbox’s official Fortnite/Xbox Cloud Gaming compatibility FAQ. “Bluetooth or USB” means either connection is documented; it does not mean every cable, adapter or mobile accessory will work.
| Controller | Connection listed | Platform or limitation stated by Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Bluetooth or USB | General supported option; the safest choice for broad Xbox Cloud Gaming use |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Bluetooth or USB | Supported where the host device accepts its Xbox gamepad input |
| Xbox Adaptive Controller | Bluetooth or USB | Supported; external switches and accessories still need their own setup |
| 8BitDo SN30 Pro | Bluetooth | Listed specifically for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Android |
| Backbone One | Wired Lightning connection | Listed for iPhone models with a Lightning port; it is not a generic Bluetooth example |
| PowerA MOGA XP5-X Plus | Bluetooth or USB | Supported |
| PowerA MOGA XP5-A Plus | Bluetooth or USB | Supported |
| Razer Raiju Mobile | Bluetooth or USB | Supported |
| Razer Junglecat | Bluetooth | Supported |
| Sony DualShock 4 | Bluetooth | Supported |
| SteelSeries Stratus XL | Bluetooth | Supported |
Xbox also names official Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers and other verified manufacturers such as 8BitDo, GameSir and Backbone. A manufacturer appearing on that list does not automatically qualify every controller it sells; verify the model and target platform.

Can you use a PS5, PS4 or Switch controller?
PS5 DualSense
Microsoft’s 2025 developer guidance includes PlayStation DualSense controllers in the supported Bluetooth category. The practical test is whether your phone, tablet or computer exposes the DualSense as a standard gamepad and whether the browser or app accepts it. Features such as adaptive triggers, advanced haptics and the built-in microphone are not guaranteed in cloud play; ordinary button and stick input is the relevant requirement.
PS4 DualShock 4
DualShock 4 is named directly in Xbox’s model-level compatibility examples and can connect over Bluetooth. If it pairs but is not detected, remove the old pairing, put the controller into pairing mode again, and reconnect before launching the browser or game.
Nintendo Switch Pro
Microsoft lists Nintendo Switch Pro controllers among supported Bluetooth classes. Button labels can differ from the on-screen Xbox prompts, and some games or browser combinations may map the A/B and X/Y positions differently. Check the game’s control display and remap controls on the host device when available.
Platform requirements that affect controller support
A supported controller cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system or browser. Xbox’s mobile FAQ lists these minimum operating systems for cloud gaming:
- Android: Android 12 or later.
- iPhone: iOS 14.4 or later.
- iPad: iPadOS 14.4 or later.
Xbox’s getting-started guidance says cloud streaming on Android, macOS, iOS, iPadOS and ChromeOS uses a supported web browser rather than a dedicated Xbox app. Microsoft Edge advises keeping the browser current and confirming that it is supported. On Windows and other devices where an Xbox app is offered, use the current app version; labels and availability can vary by region and device.
Mobile hardware also matters. A Lightning-only controller such as Backbone One cannot plug into a USB-C iPhone or iPad without the appropriate officially supported connection arrangement, and a clamp-style controller must physically fit the device. Bluetooth pairing does not solve a connector or clearance problem.
How to connect a controller and start cloud play
Android phone or tablet
- Update the device to Android 12 or later and install pending system updates.
- Open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device (the wording can differ by manufacturer).
- Put the controller in its Bluetooth pairing mode. For an Xbox controller, hold the pairing button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Select the exact controller name in the Bluetooth list and wait for the status to show connected.
- Open the supported Xbox cloud-gaming browser or app only after pairing, then sign in and launch a game that accepts a controller.
- If the game offers a controller test or control overlay, move both sticks and press each face button before starting a session.
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro example is specifically documented for Android cloud gaming. Other 8BitDo models may use different modes, so select the mode that presents a standard Android or XInput-style gamepad when the manufacturer provides a choice.
iPhone or iPad
- Confirm iOS 14.4 or iPadOS 14.4 or later.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth and enable Bluetooth.
- Enter pairing mode on the controller, select it under Other Devices, and wait for it to move to My Devices as connected.
- Open the supported browser and go to Xbox cloud gaming after the controller is connected.
- For a Lightning-mounted controller, insert it firmly and allow any accessory prompt. A Bluetooth pad and a wired Lightning model follow different connection paths.
Windows, macOS or ChromeOS browser
- Update the operating system and browser.
- Pair the controller in the system Bluetooth panel, or connect it by USB and wait for the system to finish installing its standard gamepad driver.
- Open the supported Xbox cloud-gaming site in the browser after the controller is visible to the operating system.
- Start a controller-required game and check the input response. If the browser reports no gamepad, test another supported browser before changing controller settings.
Why a paired controller is not detected
The controller is connected to another device
Many gamepads reconnect automatically to the last phone, console or computer they used. Turn Bluetooth off on that device, or remove the old pairing, then enter pairing mode and connect to the device running Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe wrong controller mode is selected
Some third-party controllers offer separate Android, iOS, XInput, DirectInput or Switch modes. A mode intended for a console or a proprietary companion app may not appear as a usable browser gamepad. Consult the controller’s own mode instructions and choose the standard mode recommended for your operating system.
The browser or app was opened too early
Browsers can cache the list of gamepads when a page loads. Close the cloud-gaming tab, connect the controller, then reopen the tab. If necessary, fully quit the browser and try again.

Permissions or system pairing data are stale
Forget the controller in Bluetooth settings, restart the device, and pair again. On a computer, remove duplicate entries for the same controller and reconnect over USB to determine whether the problem is Bluetooth-specific.
The game expects a different input type
Most cloud titles that require a gamepad expect ordinary buttons and analogue sticks. A game designed for touch controls, a keyboard or a special accessory may not respond to every controller feature. Try another controller-supported title to separate a game limitation from a connection problem.

Charge the controller, keep it close to the host device and disconnect unused Bluetooth accessories. A controller that repeatedly drops out can look like an unsupported model even when initial pairing succeeds.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controller compatibility versus stream quality
Input recognition and internet performance are separate issues. Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud-gaming connection. A fast connection cannot make an unrecognized controller work, while a verified controller cannot prevent stutter caused by congestion, high latency or weak Wi-Fi.
For the most consistent response, use a 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6 network when available, stay near the access point, pause large downloads and avoid switching between Bluetooth devices during play. USB can remove Bluetooth interference, but it does not fix an unsupported browser or an incompatible operating system.
Microsoft reported 140 million hours streamed during October–December 2024, a figure published in 2025 developer material. That usage scale explains why Xbox maintains a broad compatibility program, but it is not evidence that every Bluetooth gamepad has been tested or approved.

Choosing a controller for your device
Lowest-risk choice
Choose an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth when you want the fewest compatibility questions across phones, tablets and computers. Xbox documents both Bluetooth and USB use, and Xbox button prompts match the controls shown in Xbox games.
Android-focused compact option
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro is explicitly listed for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Android. Confirm that your phone supports Android 12 or later and that the controller is in the correct Android or XInput mode.
Phone-mounted options
Backbone One is listed for iPhone models using a Lightning connection, so check the port before purchase. USB-C phones and newer USB-C iPhones require a different physical connector or controller model.
Accessibility and specialized layouts
The Xbox Adaptive Controller is documented over Bluetooth or USB and can be paired with compatible switches and accessories. Verify each accessory’s connector, power and mapping requirements separately; cloud compatibility of the base controller does not certify every attached device.
When comparing alternatives, check five things before buying: the exact model’s verified status, Bluetooth versus USB options, the required browser or app, how the device maps standard gamepad inputs, and whether the controller physically fits and has enough battery for your sessions.
Do all games require a controller?
No. Some games support touch controls on compatible mobile devices, so a controller is optional for those titles. Other games require a wired or wireless gamepad. The game’s launch screen or control instructions is the reliable place to confirm the requirement; do not assume that touch support applies across the entire cloud catalog.
Bottom line
Xbox Cloud Gaming does not support every Bluetooth controller. It supports a wide range of contemporary Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and third-party gamepads when the model, operating system, browser or app, connection mode and game all line up. Start with a documented model, connect it before opening the cloud session, and treat successful Bluetooth pairing as only the first compatibility check.
