No. A standard WordPress installation on Ubuntu does not automatically enable reusable page caching or persistent object caching. WordPress core does keep an in-memory object cache while each PHP request runs, but that cache is discarded when the request ends. Ubuntu itself does not add a cache plugin, Redis or Memcached service, Varnish layer, or Nginx FastCGI cache.
To cache complete pages or reuse database objects between requests, you must install and configure a plugin, hosting feature, or server-side cache. The first step is to identify which cache layers, if any, are already active.
What caching exists in a normal WordPress-on-Ubuntu setup?
“Caching” can mean several different mechanisms. Confusing them is the main reason an administrator may think caching is enabled when it is not.
WordPress’s built-in object cache
WordPress stores database results and other application objects in PHP memory during a request. If the same request needs an object again, WordPress can reuse it instead of repeating the work. The WordPress Developer Reference describes this default object cache as non-persistent

When the request finishes, the PHP process is no longer holding that request’s cache for WordPress to reuse. The next visitor request starts without the previous request’s object cache. This behavior exists in core and does not require Redis, Memcached, a plugin, or a special Ubuntu package.
Full-page caching
A page cache stores the rendered HTML response for a URL. A later visitor can receive that saved response without WordPress running the full PHP and database process again. This is the type of cache most people mean when they ask whether their site is “cached.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA normal WordPress installation does not create this cache automatically. It needs a page-cache plugin or an explicitly configured web-server, reverse-proxy, hosting, or CDN layer.
Persistent object caching
A persistent object cache keeps WordPress objects available across requests. WordPress can use an object-cache.php drop-in to connect to Redis, Memcached, APC, or another backend, but core only loads that integration when the drop-in file has been installed.
Persistent object caching and page caching address different work. A page cache can avoid generating an entire public page; an object cache can reduce repeated database and application queries when WordPress still has to execute. A site may use either one or both.
Browser, CDN, and opcode caches
Static files such as images, stylesheets, and JavaScript may be cached by a browser or CDN according to HTTP headers. PHP OPcache may store compiled PHP bytecode. Those mechanisms are separate from WordPress’s request-local object cache and do not prove that complete WordPress pages are cached.

What Ubuntu’s official installation does—and does not—configure
Canonical’s Ubuntu WordPress tutorial installs WordPress from WordPress.org on Apache2, creates a virtual host, enables URL rewriting, and publishes the site. That basic procedure does not add a full-page cache or a persistent object-cache service.
Therefore, “on Ubuntu” does not change WordPress’s default cache behavior. The same WordPress files behave the same way whether the server is a fresh Ubuntu machine or another supported operating system unless an administrator, host, plugin, or deployment image adds caching configuration.
Apache2 itself can serve static files efficiently, and PHP may have OPcache enabled by a hosting image, but neither fact means that logged-out WordPress pages are being stored and reused. You must verify those layers independently.
Why WP_CACHE does not prove that pages are cached
WordPress uses the WP_CACHE constant as a signal to load an advanced-cache drop-in. The Advanced Administration Handbook explicitly states that WP_CACHE does not enable caching by itself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If define('WP_CACHE', true); appears in wp-config.php, WordPress will try to load wp-content/advanced-cache.php. A compatible plugin or platform must supply that file and implement the actual cache. The flag alone does not generate static HTML, select a storage backend, define expiration rules, or purge stale pages.
Do not add or remove the constant casually. A cache plugin may manage it, and deleting a drop-in or changing the flag can leave stale files or disable a configured system. Check which component owns the files before editing them.

How to tell whether caching is actually enabled
Use more than one check. A single file, header, or configuration line can be misleading.
-
Look for a page-cache drop-in
From the WordPress installation directory, check whether
wp-content/advanced-cache.phpexists. For example:Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.ls -l wp-content/advanced-cache.phpIf it exists, identify the plugin or hosting platform that created it and review that product’s settings. The file indicates that WordPress has an advanced-cache loader available; it does not, by itself, tell you whether every URL is currently served from cache.
-
Look for a persistent object-cache drop-in
Check for
wp-content/object-cache.php:ls -l wp-content/object-cache.phpOpen the file or inspect the owning plugin’s documentation to determine whether it connects to Redis, Memcached, APC, or another backend. The presence of the file is evidence of an integration, not evidence that the backend is reachable or healthy.
-
Review WordPress plugins and hosting controls
In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Installed Plugins and look for a page-cache or object-cache plugin. Also inspect your hosting control panel for CDN, edge-cache, Varnish, Redis, or similar features. A managed platform may provide caching outside the WordPress dashboard.
-
Inspect response headers

curl -I https://example.com/Replace the example host with your domain. Look for cache-control directives, age information, or headers added by a proxy. Header names vary by platform, so the absence of a familiar “HIT” header is not conclusive. Compare repeated requests and test a URL that should be cacheable, not an administration or account page.
-
Inspect the web-server and proxy configuration
Review Apache virtual-host files, Nginx configuration, and any Varnish configuration for explicit cache rules. For Nginx, search for a configured
fastcgi_cachezone, cache key, bypass conditions, and purge behavior. Installing Ubuntu or Nginx does not create those settings automatically. -
Test logged-in and personalized requests separately
Many systems bypass page caching for logged-in users, requests with authentication cookies, POST requests, carts, checkout pages, previews, and URLs with selected query strings. Test an anonymous browser session as well as an authenticated session so you do not mistake an intentional bypass for a broken cache.
Ways to add caching on Ubuntu
| Approach | What it caches | Where it runs | What you must configure | Persistence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Page-cache plugin | Rendered HTML for eligible URLs | Inside WordPress and its filesystem or configured storage | Cache rules, exclusions, expiration, and purge behavior | Reusable across requests while entries remain valid |
| Varnish or another reverse proxy | HTTP responses, commonly public GET pages | In front of Apache or another origin server | Backend, cache keys, cookies, bypass rules, and purging | Reusable across requests and potentially across application workers |
| Nginx FastCGI cache | Responses generated by PHP-FPM | Nginx on the web server | Cache zone, key, exclusions, stale behavior, and purge mechanism | Reusable on the configured server |
| Persistent object cache | Database and application objects | WordPress drop-in plus Redis, Memcached, APC, or similar backend | Backend service, connection details, eviction policy, and invalidation | Reusable across requests; multi-server behavior depends on the backend |
| Browser or CDN cache | Static assets and, if configured, HTML responses | Visitor browser or edge network | HTTP headers, edge rules, purge controls, and cookie handling | Depends on response policy and edge configuration |
Install a page-cache plugin
WordPress documentation identifies W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache, and Cache Enabler as plugins that can generate static files for posts and pages. Choose one compatible with your WordPress and PHP versions, install it from the dashboard or your controlled deployment process, and configure it rather than assuming activation is sufficient.
At minimum, decide which public URLs may be cached, how long entries remain valid, and what event purges them. Exclude administration screens, previews, login and account pages, carts, checkout, and any page whose output depends on a particular visitor. Confirm that publishing or editing content clears the relevant cached URLs.
Configure a server-side page cache
Varnish can sit in front of WordPress, while Nginx can cache PHP-FPM responses with fastcgi_cache. Neither is enabled merely because the package or operating system is installed. You must define a cache zone or storage, construct a safe cache key, bypass requests that carry sessions or submit data, and provide a reliable purge path.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
A server cache can be fast and efficient, but a bad bypass rule can serve one visitor’s personalized response to another visitor. Start with public, read-only GET requests and verify cookies, authorization headers, query strings, and POST requests before expanding coverage.
Add persistent object caching
Install an object-cache.php integration and run a Redis, Memcached, or comparable service supplied by your host or by your Ubuntu deployment. Configure authentication, network access, memory limits, eviction behavior, and monitoring. If the service is unavailable, WordPress may experience errors or fall back depending on the integration, so test failure behavior before relying on it in production.
Persistent object caching is often useful for sites with expensive database queries or frequent dynamic requests. It does not automatically turn rendered pages into static files, so it should not be described as a substitute for a page cache.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing the right cache layer
Base the decision on the bottleneck rather than the label “cache.”
- Mostly public content: A page cache can remove repeated PHP and database work for anonymous visitors. Make invalidation on publishing and updates a priority.
- Personalized or transactional traffic: Keep account, cart, checkout, dashboard, and other user-specific responses uncached or narrowly bypassed. An object cache may improve repeated application queries without storing complete personalized pages.
- Several application servers: A local filesystem page cache may not be shared between servers. Use a shared or edge layer, or ensure that each node is purged consistently. A shared persistent object backend can provide common state, but it adds a service dependency.
- Small sites with limited administration time: A plugin or managed hosting feature may be simpler than maintaining Varnish or custom Nginx rules. Confirm what it caches and how purges occur instead of accepting the word “optimized” as proof.
- Static assets are the main concern: Review cache-control headers and CDN or browser policy. Improving asset caching is separate from caching WordPress-generated HTML.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Assuming Ubuntu supplied the cache
Ubuntu is the operating system and installation platform. It does not silently install a WordPress page-cache plugin or configure Redis, Memcached, Varnish, or Nginx caching. Find the actual component that owns each cache before changing settings.
Treating WP_CACHE as the implementation
The constant is a loader flag. If no working advanced-cache.php drop-in exists, it does not make pages reusable. If a drop-in exists, identify its owner and use that system’s purge and bypass controls.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCaching the wrong requests
Never cache a response merely because it returned HTTP 200. Cookies, authentication, POST data, query parameters, previews, and personalization can make a response unsafe to reuse. Define explicit bypass rules and test anonymous, logged-in, and transactional flows.
Forgetting invalidation
A cache that never purges can display old titles, menus, feeds, or settings after an edit. Test publishing, updating, deleting, theme changes, and plugin changes. Purge the affected page and related archives rather than relying only on a long expiration time.
Adding several page caches at once
Stacking a plugin, Varnish, Nginx FastCGI cache, and CDN without a clear ownership model makes stale content and bypass failures difficult to diagnose. Introduce one page-cache layer at a time, document its key and purge behavior, and then add other layers only when their responsibilities are distinct.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- A standard WordPress installation on Ubuntu has no full-page or persistent object cache enabled by default.
- WordPress’s built-in object cache is request-local and non-persistent.
WP_CACHEonly tells WordPress to look for an advanced-cache drop-in; it is not a cache implementation.- Page, object, browser, CDN, and opcode caches are separate layers with different bypass and invalidation rules.
- Reusable page or object caching requires an explicit plugin, hosting feature, or server configuration.
