Sometimes, depending on the feature you use, the permissions you grant, and your settings. Microsoft says Windows Copilot’s recent-file display references Windows Recent Items and does not automatically scan your PC or upload files. Separate features can work with file contents or relevant PC data. Browsing history, diagnostic data, Edge import and sync, and account activity each have different controls.
What can Windows Copilot access on your PC?
Recent-file suggestions
Microsoft says Copilot for Windows can show files you recently opened by referencing Windows Recent Items. It states, “Copilot does not scan your PC or upload any files automatically.” You can hide a recent file displayed in Copilot. This describes automatic recent-file display; it does not mean every Copilot feature is unable to access file contents. Microsoft’s Windows Copilot privacy FAQ explains this distinction.
File-content and PC insights features
Microsoft also documents Copilot capabilities that can help find or open files and answer questions about their contents, including files synced from OneDrive on the device. Its experimental PC insights feature is opt-in: it prompts before accessing relevant device or file data, retrieves specific data needed for the request, and provides a way to revoke permissions. What Copilot can work with therefore depends on the feature and permissions, not just on whether the app is installed. See Microsoft’s pages on finding and opening files and PC insights.
Does Windows Copilot access browsing history?
Microsoft distinguishes locally stored browsing history from diagnostic data sent to Microsoft. Its Windows FAQ says Copilot for Windows saves browsing history on the device; depending on settings, that history may be sent as diagnostic data to help diagnose and improve products. This is separate from choosing to import or sync Edge data.

To review optional diagnostic data, open Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Privacy and check Send optional diagnostic data to improve Microsoft products. Restart Copilot for Windows after changing the setting to finish applying it. For Windows diagnostic data, go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback, then select Delete under Delete diagnostic data. Microsoft lists these controls in its Windows privacy FAQ.
Clear browsing data stored by Copilot
To clear Copilot’s browser data, open Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Clear Browsing data. Choose a time range and the types of data to clear. The listed choices include cookies and site data, cache, passwords, form data, permissions, and media data. Clearing download-history entries removes the list of downloads, not the downloaded files themselves.

What changes if you use Edge import or sync?
Microsoft says Copilot can import Edge cookies at launch if you allow it. If you are signed in, you can also enable sync of browser data—such as history, favorites, passwords, and other data—between Copilot apps and Edge. These are configurable choices, not the same thing as Copilot’s local recent-file display.

Which account and Copilot feature are you using?
Microsoft provides separate privacy guidance for personal Microsoft accounts and work or school accounts using Microsoft Entra ID. Do not assume a personal-account setting or instruction applies to an organization’s account. Microsoft’s work and school account guidance is separate from its personal-account controls.
For personal accounts, Copilot settings include controls for memory and personalization, chat history, web search, personalized advertising, and Edge browser-data import. Availability can vary by account and version; Microsoft notes that the individual browser-data import setting is available for US accounts and that the setting is also available to organizational accounts.

How can you review or delete Copilot activity?
Browser data, Windows diagnostic data, and Copilot app activity are managed in different places. For a personal Microsoft account, Microsoft provides export and deletion controls for Copilot app activity history through its privacy dashboard. Follow Microsoft’s steps to export or delete activity history; this is distinct from clearing browser data in Copilot or deleting Windows diagnostic data.

Is Browse with Copilot in Edge the same feature?
No. Browse with Copilot in Edge is a separate Edge feature, not the Windows Copilot app’s browsing pane. Microsoft says that when Browse with Copilot is active, prompts, responses, and a record of work are saved in conversation history. Information entered directly into a webpage is not saved by Copilot, although it may be saved in Edge.

Microsoft advises against using Browse with Copilot for financial activity, personal identifiers, medical records, or highly confidential information, and recommends monitoring the feature’s actions. See Microsoft’s privacy and safety guidance for Browse with Copilot.
How long is Copilot conversation activity kept?
Microsoft’s individual Copilot FAQ says conversation activity is stored for 18 months by default and can be deleted. That retention statement concerns conversation activity under that FAQ’s scope; it is not a retention period for local Windows browsing history. See Microsoft’s individual Copilot FAQ.
Quick checks to understand your own setup
- For files, distinguish recent-file suggestions from a file-content or PC insights feature, and review any permission prompt.
- For browsing, check optional diagnostic data separately from Edge import and sync.
- For deletion, choose the relevant control: Copilot browsing settings, Windows Diagnostics & feedback, or the personal-account privacy dashboard.
- For an Edge browsing feature, check Edge-specific guidance rather than assuming Windows Copilot settings govern it.
