Yes—VRAM affects gaming when a game and its chosen settings need more graphics memory than a GPU can effectively provide. That can mean lowering texture settings or seeing texture pop-in and stutter. But more VRAM does not automatically produce more frames per second: when a game’s workload fits, GPU processing power and the rest of the memory subsystem may matter more.

What VRAM does in a gaming PC

Video RAM (VRAM) is the GPU’s onboard workspace for graphics data, including textures and other rendering assets. Its capacity determines how much data can reside there. Capacity is only one part of performance: memory bandwidth and the broader memory subsystem affect how quickly data moves, while the GPU’s compute resources process rendering work. NVIDIA cautions that memory bus width alone is not a sufficient measure of memory-subsystem performance (NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 Ti memory explanation).

When the workload fits within a card’s effective capacity, a higher-capacity version of a similar GPU may perform much like the smaller-memory version. NVIDIA says its RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and 16GB models can run at maximum settings with the same performance in most games, while noting a handful of titles where 8GB may require High rather than Ultra settings. That is a model-specific manufacturer explanation, not a guarantee about every GPU or game.

What makes a game use more VRAM?

Resolution and rendering workload

Higher resolution means more pixels to render, which generally increases the workload. CD PROJEKT RED illustrates the difference: 5120 × 2880 contains 14,745,600 pixels, while 2560 × 1440 contains 3,686,400—about one quarter as many. This is a pixel-count comparison, not evidence that the higher resolution requires four times as much VRAM or that performance falls by exactly four times (CD PROJEKT RED’s resolution and performance guidance).

Texture quality and optional assets

High-resolution textures and optional texture packs can increase memory demand. More capacity can give a GPU room for larger assets and higher settings; AMD says ample VRAM can also reduce visual issues such as texture pop-in (AMD’s Radeon VRAM guidance). Games differ in how they use assets, so a texture setting that fits one title may not fit another.

Ray tracing and other game settings

Ray tracing and other graphics features change a game’s resource demands. For example, AMD’s published comparison of a 12GB Radeon RX 6750 XT and an 8GB GeForce RTX 4060 Ti used Far Cry 6 at 1440p Ultra with ray tracing set to High. The test was dated May 16, 2023, and used specified drivers and a Ryzen 9 7950X3D system. Because the cards are different GPU models, it is not a controlled test of VRAM capacity alone.

Game engine behavior

Some games allocate VRAM when it is available. As NVIDIA explains, an overlay’s allocation or “used” figure does not prove that all reported memory is actively required; determining precise active use can require developer tools. Treat the number as a clue, not a diagnosis.

Does more VRAM increase FPS?

Sometimes, but only when capacity constrains the workload or otherwise changes how well the game can maintain performance. If the game fits, extra capacity by itself does not guarantee a higher average frame rate. GPU compute capability, bandwidth, architecture, cache, game behavior, and settings all affect results. There is no universal FPS gain per additional gigabyte established by the cited comparisons.

Results from PC Gamer’s 2026 tests illustrate why the game and settings matter. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at 1080p High with Quality upscaling, PC Gamer recorded 171 average FPS and a 152 FPS 1% low for the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, compared with 153 average FPS and a 126 FPS 1% low for the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB. In its Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 High-settings tests, reported average VRAM use was below 8GB for all four cards tested—the RTX 5060 Ti and RX 9060 XT in both 8GB and 16GB versions—and the gaps tightened compared with Ultra settings. Other reported tests, including Cyberpunk 2077 under specific settings, sometimes showed higher average frame rates or stronger 1% lows on 16GB versions (PC Gamer’s 2026 8GB-versus-16GB tests). These are results for particular models, test routes, games, and settings, not a universal effect of adding memory.

How much VRAM do you need?

There is no single capacity that guarantees a good experience at a given resolution. The right amount depends on the games you play, texture and ray-tracing settings, target frame rate, and the GPU’s overall performance. ASUS broadly recommends 8GB for 1080p, 12GB for 1440p, and 16GB for 4K, but those are the manufacturer’s buying guidelines, not universal minimums. ASUS also says average FPS is primarily set by GPU core performance; check recommendations against benchmarks for your actual games and settings (ASUS’s VRAM guidance).

  • Game and settings match: Look for benchmarks at your intended resolution, texture quality, and ray-tracing settings.
  • Average FPS and 1% lows: Average performance can hide dips; 1% lows help show whether frame delivery is less consistent.
  • Overall GPU capability: Consider compute performance, memory bandwidth, architecture, and relevant cache. Bus width alone does not describe the whole memory subsystem.
  • Capacity headroom: More VRAM can accommodate larger assets and demanding settings, but it is not a frame-rate guarantee.
  • Price and features: Weigh cost and features such as upscaling alongside memory. AMD’s current graphics-card guidance treats VRAM as one factor among compute capability, performance per dollar, and upscaling support (AMD’s graphics-card lineup).

How to check whether VRAM pressure is causing trouble

Stutter or texture pop-in can have several causes, so an overlay reading alone is not enough to identify a VRAM limit. Try a repeatable settings comparison in the same game scene:

  1. Note the game, scene, resolution, texture quality, and other demanding settings you are using.
  2. Lower texture quality first. If the issue continues, reduce resolution or disable particularly demanding options, such as ray tracing.
  3. Replay the same scene and compare the symptoms and frame-time behavior. If the problem improves after reducing graphics demand, memory pressure may be involved, but that observation does not prove a hardware diagnosis.

AMD identifies texture pop-in as a visual issue ample VRAM can reduce, and ASUS recommends lowering resolution or texture size to reduce memory demand. The precise effect depends on the title and settings.
