No. Verizon has not done away with basic flip phones: its prepaid catalog lists the TCL FLIP 3, a keypad phone with 4G LTE and HD Voice. But that listing does not mean every older flip phone still works, or that the model is in stock everywhere. For an older handset, the deciding factors are its exact model, support for VoLTE, and eligibility for activation on Verizon.
What changed—and what did not
Verizon completed its CDMA network retirement by December 31, 2022. The change retired a network technology, not the flip-phone design. Verizon says devices that rely on 3G/CDMA, or use 4G without VoLTE, cannot make calls, send texts, or use data on the retired network. Verizon’s network-retirement announcement describes the milestone.
VoLTE means voice calls carried over 4G LTE rather than a traditional voice network. Verizon calls its VoLTE-enabled service HD Voice; as Verizon Support explains, “HD Voice is a suite of services enabled by VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology.” A basic flip phone does not need 5G simply because Verizon retired CDMA: the current TCL example uses 4G LTE.

Which flip-phone options does Verizon list?
TCL FLIP 3: a basic keypad phone
Verizon’s prepaid product page lists the TCL FLIP 3 as a voice-and-text flip phone with 4G LTE and HD Voice. The listing also specifies dual displays, large keys, USB Type-C charging, a 5 MP rear camera, and 16 GB of storage. These are manufacturer/product specifications shown on Verizon’s page, not independent performance measurements. A catalog listing is not a guarantee of local stock or that every third-party listing is compatible.

Alcatel GO FLIP V: a documented older example
Verizon Business product information describes the Alcatel GO FLIP V as supporting 4G LTE, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling. That shows a flip design can use LTE voice technology, but it does not establish that this model is currently available to consumer customers. Check current availability and activation eligibility before treating it as a purchase option.
Motorola razr: a different kind of “flip”
Verizon’s 2026 motorola razr announcement concerns a foldable-screen smartphone, not a basic keypad handset. The shared “flip” description refers to the folding form factor; the device category, features, and network requirements differ.

How to check whether an older flip phone will work
- Find the exact model. Use the phone’s settings, packaging, or label to identify its model number; “flip phone” or a brand name alone is not specific enough.
- Check voice-network support. Look for Verizon-compatible VoLTE or HD Voice support. A phone that depends on CDMA/3G, or has 4G data but no VoLTE for calls, is not made compatible by its shape or age.
- Confirm Verizon activation eligibility. Ask Verizon to check the exact model before buying or attempting activation. Network bands and voice support matter, but the carrier’s activation check is also necessary.
- Verify the purchase details separately. Check current stock, plan requirements, return terms, and the exact seller listing. Product specifications alone do not establish inventory, price, plan eligibility, or compatibility of a third-party device.
Choose by the job the phone needs to do
- For calls and texts with physical keys: start with a basic keypad model such as the TCL FLIP 3 listed by Verizon, then verify current availability and plan terms.
- For an existing handset: check the precise model’s VoLTE/HD Voice support and Verizon activation eligibility rather than assuming that all flip phones work—or that all have been discontinued.
- For a folding smartphone: evaluate it as a smartphone, not as a basic voice-and-text phone. Its ability to fold does not make it equivalent to a keypad handset.
