Sometimes. Upscaling can make lower-resolution video look cleaner or sharper on a higher-resolution screen, but it cannot guarantee recovery of detail missing from the source. The result depends on the source, the processing, the display and your viewing preferences.

What upscaling does—and what it cannot do

A screen has a fixed grid of pixels. When video has fewer pixels than the screen, a scaler enlarges the image to fit. Conventional scaling filters or interpolates the existing pixels to fill the larger grid. This can reduce jagged edges, but may also leave the result looking soft or blurry. NVIDIA’s explainer describes how AI upscaling differs: a learned model predicts higher-resolution pixels based on patterns it has learned.

Those predicted pixels can make an image appear crisper, but they are not proof that the predicted features were present in the original scene. Upscaling can improve presentation; it cannot guarantee a faithful reconstruction of lost detail.

Why the result can look better—or worse

The source sets the ceiling

A clean, reasonably detailed source gives a scaler more useful information to work with than a noisy, heavily compressed or very low-resolution clip. In its TV upscaling tests, RTINGS uses 720×480 video and notes that even a TV that performs considerably better than another cannot make poor-quality 480p material look excellent.

Sharpness has a trade-off

Too little sharpening can leave edges soft. Too much can create halos, harsh outlines or an artificial look. RTINGS advises making only modest sharpness adjustments and stopping when halos or harsh lines become visible. A sharper-looking image is not automatically a more accurate one.

Compression artifacts may remain

Resolution and compression are separate issues. Enlarging a video does not, by itself, remove blockiness or other compression defects; those flaws may become easier to see on a larger pixel grid. Some processing pipelines combine scaling with artifact reduction, but results depend on the system and the content. NVIDIA describes its RTX Video Super Resolution as enhancing edges and features while detecting and removing compression artifacts, but this is the vendor’s description of its implementation—not a guarantee that every clip will improve. NVIDIA’s RTX Video FAQ also notes that results vary with content and that the feature uses GPU resources.

Content and viewing conditions matter

Fine text, foliage, faces, animation, film grain and fast motion can expose different strengths or flaws. A 2016 IEEE study comparing 4K and HD video discusses factors such as sensor noise, fast-moving objects, intentionally blurred regions, encoding artifacts and image size as influences on perceived resolution. Its findings are tied to the study’s conditions, not a universal ranking of today’s TVs or upscalers. Read the IEEE study.

Does AI upscaling look better than regular scaling?

It can, especially when a model’s predictions produce detail that looks plausible and pleasing to you. But AI processing can also create details that were not recorded, smooth away texture or make edges look too aggressive. Whether the result is preferable is a judgment about appearance, not evidence that the image is more faithful to the source.

Perceptual quality cannot be reduced to one objective number. Sony Interactive Entertainment notes that “increasing PSNR does not necessarily translate to better visual quality.” Its 2025 research summary reports results for a neural-wrapper video-compression approach, including an average 18.5% BD-rate saving across objective scores and improved mean-opinion scores over two standard codecs. Those are video-coding research results—not a consumer upscaling benchmark. See Sony Interactive Entertainment’s research summary.

How to judge upscaling fairly

Compare the same clip with processing on and off, or compare two devices using the same source. Keep the display, picture settings, image size and viewing distance consistent. Look at the picture from your usual seat, not only from close up.

  • Check fine detail: Look for textures such as roof shingles, foliage or small text. Does the image retain detail, or does it look smeared?
  • Inspect edges: Watch for jagged lines, halos, harsh outlines and excessive smoothing.
  • Watch motion: Check whether fine textures remain stable as objects move, rather than flickering or breaking up.
  • Notice compression flaws: Look for blockiness or other artifacts that remain or become more prominent.
  • Choose by the result: Prefer the version that looks better to you at normal viewing distance, rather than relying on labels such as “4K” or “AI.”

RTINGS’ TV test illustrates why model-level performance matters: it uses 720×480 YCbCr 4:2:0 video, examines details such as roof shingles and boat names, and assigns a subjective score. Its examples show that TVs can differ while source quality still limits the outcome. RTINGS explains its test and examples.

What to adjust when the picture looks wrong

  1. Start with the best source available. A cleaner, higher-quality source is a better starting point than a noisy or heavily compressed copy.
  2. If the picture looks soft, raise sharpness slightly. Stop if edges develop halos or harsh lines; more sharpening is not always better.
  3. Try noise or artifact reduction only when needed. On visibly noisy, low-quality material, it may help. Turn it off if it blurs the picture or removes fine detail.
  4. Compare the processing on and off. Judge the same scene using consistent picture settings and your usual viewing distance.

What to consider when choosing a TV or playback setup

If you regularly watch DVDs, 480p or 720p video, or low-bitrate streams, upscaling performance may matter more to you than it does to someone who mostly watches clean high-resolution sources. Compare actual results for the content you watch, rather than buying on an “AI upscaling” label alone.

For an internal TV scaler, an external playback device or GPU-based enhancement, consider the source quality, edge and texture handling, artifact reduction, performance on motion, and your display size and viewing distance. Also check compatibility and resource requirements for the playback setup. NVIDIA documents specific requirements for RTX Video functions in its RTX Video FAQ; those requirements and software details can change.

There is no universal improvement percentage that predicts whether upscaled content will look better to every viewer. The reliable test is a fair comparison of the same source under the conditions in which you normally watch.
