Sometimes, but there is no guaranteed FPS boost. A Windows update can improve gaming performance if it fixes a problem affecting your PC, game, driver, or controller. But results vary by update and hardware, and a new Windows version may leave average FPS nearly unchanged—or cause a regression.
When a Windows update can change your FPS
Updates may include performance fixes, but that does not mean every PC will gain frames. The effect depends on whether the update addresses an issue relevant to your setup. A fix for one game or device may not affect another, and an update can also introduce a compatibility problem.
Microsoft says Windows updates often include fixes and performance improvements, while also recommending other steps such as checking optional driver updates and reducing unnecessary background activity. That is general performance guidance, not a promise of higher gaming FPS. Microsoft’s performance guidance also identifies limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, and hardware limitations as possible causes of a slow PC.

What testing says about Windows version and gaming performance
Windows 10 versus Windows 11 24H2
In a 2025 comparison, Windows Central tested seven games on one PC before and after upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 24H2. The test system used a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an RTX 5070 Ti, and 32 GB of DDR5 memory. The publication found average performance practically identical overall: some game results were slightly higher on Windows 11 and others lower. Minimum FPS also fell in some of the tested games. See Windows Central’s test and results.
#1 Best Overall
- Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
- Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
- Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
- Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
- Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
That comparison is useful evidence that an operating-system upgrade does not automatically lift frame rates, but it is one system tested in seven games. It cannot predict what will happen on a different processor, graphics card, driver, game, or Windows build.
Windows 11 25H2 versus 24H2
Tom’s Hardware’s September 2025 summary of Phoronix testing reported mixed results across benchmark workloads, rather than consistent superiority for Windows 11 25H2 over 24H2. The results argue against treating a feature-update label as a performance ranking; they are not a broad, game-by-game FPS comparison. Read Tom’s Hardware’s summary.

Why FPS can rise, fall, or stay the same after updating
- A relevant fix: An update may resolve a specific performance or compatibility issue affecting your game or device.
- A simultaneous driver change: A graphics driver or optional driver update installed around the same time can also affect performance, making it harder to attribute a change to Windows alone.
- Background activity or system limits: Startup apps, browser tabs, low available storage, or hardware limits can constrain performance regardless of Windows version.
- A narrow fix—or a regression: An update can help one device or scenario without changing FPS elsewhere, and a compatibility issue can hurt performance on affected systems.
For example, Microsoft’s November 2025 notes for update KB5068861 listed fixes related to handheld-device battery life and controller response. Those are specific usability fixes, not evidence that the update increases FPS. Read the KB5068861 notes.

How to find out whether an update changed your FPS
- Record what changed. Note your Windows edition, version and build, the update identifier, graphics driver version, game, and PC hardware. If the driver changed at the same time, include that too.
- Repeat a comparable test. Use the same game scene, resolution, graphics settings, and background workload where practical. Restart before testing and close unnecessary apps and browser tabs.
- Look beyond average FPS. Compare low-frame metrics and watch for stutter or uneven pacing. A similar average can coexist with worse dips or a less smooth experience.
- Check the update’s status and notes. Review the version-specific change log and Microsoft’s release-health information for known issues or relevant fixes. The Windows 11 25H2 release-health page links to current issue information for that version.
- Check other likely causes. Review graphics-driver status, optional driver updates, startup activity, available storage, and hardware limits using Microsoft’s PC performance steps.
- Act on a reproducible problem, not timing alone. If a repeatable FPS drop aligns with a documented issue for your build or device, follow the applicable Microsoft or graphics-vendor troubleshooting guidance. A change occurring after an update does not, by itself, prove the update caused it.
What to know about current Windows update versions
As of September 29, 2026, Microsoft has announced Windows 11 version 26H2 as an enablement package for eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 PCs that share its underlying codebase and servicing branch. Microsoft describes a controlled rollout and says compatibility safeguard holds may delay the update on devices with known issues. The announcement explains delivery and availability; it does not promise an FPS improvement. Read Microsoft’s 26H2 announcement.

Microsoft’s 25H2 history says some features previously held behind temporary controls in 24H2 are enabled by default in 25H2, and directs users to release health for current known issues. Feature availability is not evidence of higher FPS. Check Windows release information.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s performance guidance. That matters when considering support and security, but it is not a gaming benchmark.

Should you install a Windows update for gaming?
Install updates for relevant fixes, security, compatibility, and continued support, but do not count on an automatic FPS gain. If gaming performance is the deciding factor, check the exact update’s notes and known-issue status, then judge it using repeatable tests on your own PC. A Windows version number alone cannot tell you which setup will run a particular game faster.
