Undervolting does not automatically void every warranty. The answer depends on the exact CPU or GPU, whether it is a standalone part or installed in a laptop or prebuilt PC, the warranty issuer’s terms, and your region. Some manufacturers warn that changing voltage may affect coverage; others focus on whether out-of-spec operation caused the defect. Check the warranty for the product and system you own before changing settings.
What undervolting changes—and what it does not prove
Undervolting lowers the voltage supplied to a processor or graphics chip through a control exposed by firmware, a system maker, or supported software. Users may pursue it to reduce heat or power use, but the cited warranty and support documents do not establish a typical saving, performance result, or longer hardware life.
A voltage change is not, by itself, proof that a component has been damaged or that every warranty has ended. The key distinction is between language that warns a modification may affect coverage and language that excludes a defect when the manufacturer determines it was caused by out-of-specification operation.

Intel: voltage changes may affect boxed-processor warranty coverage
Intel’s boxed-processor warranty page warns: “Altering clock frequency or voltage may void any product warranties and reduce stability, security, performance, and life of the processor and other components.” The page was reviewed May 13, 2026. This is a warning about potential consequences, not a statement that every undervolt automatically cancels every warranty. Read Intel’s boxed-processor warranty terms.

For a processor supplied inside an OEM laptop or prebuilt PC, Intel says the system maker’s warranty generally applies and support is generally handled by that manufacturer rather than Intel. Intel also says its technology may enable detection of altered clock frequency or voltage during an issue investigation; “may” does not mean detection is certain in every case. Intel’s guidance for locked non-K processors says that Intel does not provide undervolting controls, software, or tools for those processors and recommends checking with the system and component manufacturers.
AMD: warranty language centers on out-of-specification use and causation
AMD’s Ryzen Master user guide warns that damage caused by using an AMD processor outside official specifications or factory settings is not covered by AMD’s product warranty and may not be covered by the board or system maker. The warning addresses damage caused by such use; it does not explicitly say that any undervolt, regardless of settings or result, voids all coverage. Read the AMD Ryzen Master warning.

AMD’s processor limited warranty separately excludes certain defects or non-conformance when AMD determines they were caused by improper use, operation, or modification outside AMD specifications; it also lists overclocking among excluded causes. That is a causation-based condition in the warranty text, not a blanket rule about every voltage adjustment. Read AMD’s processor limited warranty.

NVIDIA’s US GeForce graphics-card warranty describes coverage for manufacturing defects or hardware component failures. It excludes problems unrelated to those conditions, including certain misuse, negligence, misapplication of service, and software issues. The cited terms do not specifically address undervolting, so their silence does not establish either that undervolting voids coverage or that it is always permitted. The US page also notes that some states and jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions or limitations. Read NVIDIA’s US GeForce warranty.

NVIDIA’s EU warranty page says its written warranty does not affect legal rights, including claims under legal guarantees for the warranted product. That statement is specific to the EU page and does not determine an individual buyer’s rights. Read NVIDIA’s EU GeForce warranty.
Why the warranty issuer matters
A graphics card or processor bought as a standalone component may have a component-maker warranty. The same chip inside a laptop or prebuilt desktop is also part of a complete system, whose manufacturer may control service and warranty decisions. A board maker may have separate terms as well. Do not assume that one brand’s component policy answers what another company will do for the complete system.

Warranty terms can also differ by product model, purchase date, and selling region. Intel’s boxed-processor language, AMD’s processor warranty, and NVIDIA’s cited GeForce terms are not interchangeable; nor do they establish every laptop or prebuilt maker’s policy.
How to check your specific coverage
- Identify the product. Record the CPU or GPU model and, for a laptop or prebuilt PC, the complete system model. Note whether the part was sold separately or came installed in the system.
- Find the applicable warranty. Use the warranty document for the product, purchase date, and region. For an OEM system, start with the system maker’s warranty and support guidance; component terms may not be the terms used for the whole computer.
- Check the control and its limits. Confirm whether the BIOS, firmware, or software control is supported by the manufacturer and whether the resulting settings remain within published specifications or factory settings. Availability can depend on the processor and OEM BIOS configuration.
- Read the exact exclusion. Look for whether the terms address alteration or modification itself, or exclude damage only when the manufacturer determines it was caused by operation outside specifications.
- Ask the warranty issuer if the stakes are high. Describe the exact model and the setting you intend to change, and request written clarification. A general answer from a chip maker may not settle coverage for an OEM laptop or prebuilt PC.
Resetting a setting may restore default operation, but the cited materials do not establish that a reset erases investigation records or guarantees warranty coverage.

What to know about Intel voltage controls
Intel describes Undervolt Protection as a processor feature that limits voltage from going below a minimum set in BIOS or the processor default. Intel’s current support page says it is available on 12th Gen Intel Core processors and newer; OEMs decide which menu options users can access. That generation detail applies to the processor families described on that page, not necessarily to every Intel product. Read Intel’s Undervolt Protection explanation.
Intel warns that changing voltage can affect stability, security, performance, and component life. Treat this as Intel’s stated risk, not a prediction that every undervolt will cause those outcomes. Whether the relevant controls appear depends on the processor and the system maker’s BIOS configuration.
If a warranty claim is denied
Ask the issuer to identify the warranty term it relied on and explain how it applies to the specific failure. Keep the purchase record, warranty document, model details, and any written clarification together. Whether you have additional rights depends on your location and circumstances; the cited warranty pages alone cannot determine an individual claim. NVIDIA’s EU page expressly says its written warranty does not affect legal rights under legal guarantees, while the US page notes that some jurisdictions limit certain exclusions.
