No. Turning off Gemini in Chrome is a feature or permission change, not an erase command. It can stop Gemini from using Chrome context in the future, but it does not by itself remove Gemini Apps Activity, Chrome browsing history, temporary account logs, or copies of chats that Google says may already have been reviewed by service providers.
To clean up what you can, handle the controls separately: disable Gemini’s Chrome permission, review Gemini Apps Activity, turn off Keep Activity if appropriate, and clear Chrome history for the relevant period.
What turning off Gemini in Chrome actually does
Chrome places the Gemini control under Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome → Permissions. The option may be labelled Let Gemini browse for you, although wording and availability can vary by Chrome version, account type and rollout. Switching that permission off limits or stops future browsing assistance. It is a forward-looking permission switch; it is not presented by Google as a command to erase records that already exist.

That distinction matters because Gemini in Chrome can interact with several kinds of information. A feature switch controls whether future requests can use Chrome context. It does not automatically reach into every place where related information may be held, such as Gemini Apps Activity, the browser’s History database or records maintained under separate Google services.

If your concern is that Gemini has already seen a page, URL, file or audio clip, disabling the feature prevents a new use under that permission. It does not prove that previous access never happened, and it does not establish that every copy, log or derived record has been removed.
The four controls are separate
Google documents several settings that are easy to confuse. Use the control that matches the result you want rather than treating every “off” switch as a deletion tool.

The table describes the scopes documented by Google, not a guarantee that one action propagates to every system. A complete privacy cleanup therefore requires checking each relevant control.

When you use Gemini in Chrome, Google says the service can collect and process the page content and URL from the current tab and from other tabs that you share with it. If you ask Gemini to find something in Chrome history, relevant URLs from that history can also be collected. For example, a request such as “show me the article that I was reading this morning” or “what was that place with vegan pizza that I was looking at?” may require Gemini to use browser-history context.

Some page content used by Gemini may not be visible to you in the conversation. That means the visible chat transcript is not necessarily a complete inventory of every piece of page context processed for a request.
With Keep Activity on, Google says information from websites visited with the feature, along with audio or files you share with Gemini, is stored in Gemini Apps Activity. Google also says page content is temporarily logged to the Google Account and does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Consequently, deleting an item you can see in the activity list should not be described as proof that all temporary logs or related records everywhere have disappeared.
“Accessed” also does not always mean “permanently retained.” Some information may be used to answer a request and then handled under a temporary logging or service-retention rule. The published controls specify particular exceptions and periods, but they do not promise instant, universal erasure from every Google system.
How to stop future Gemini access and remove the records you can control
1. Disable Gemini’s Chrome permission
- Open Chrome on the profile where you use Gemini.
- Open Settings.
- Select AI innovations.
- Open Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Permissions, turn off the relevant option, such as Let Gemini browse for you.
This step addresses future feature use. It does not remove past Gemini activity or browser history, so continue with the next steps if deletion is your goal.

2. Review Gemini Apps Activity
- Open your Google Account’s My Activity area and choose Gemini Apps Activity.
- Review entries for the dates and conversations you care about.
- Use the available delete control to remove individual items or a selected range.
- If you do not want future interactions saved in the activity list, use the control there to turn Keep Activity off.
Keep Activity changes future handling; it is not a retroactive wipe of everything already listed. Google says that when Keep Activity is off, future chats will not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and will not be used to train its AI models unless you send feedback. Even then, the chats may be held for up to 72 hours for providing the service, processing feedback and maintaining safety.
3. Clear Chrome browsing history separately
- In Chrome, open the History page.
- Choose the option to clear browsing data.
- Select a time range that includes the visits you want removed.
- Confirm deletion of browsing history.
Google explicitly distinguishes browser-stored activity from My Activity. Removing an entry from Gemini Apps Activity does not automatically remove the corresponding visited-page record in Chrome.
4. Check other Google services
If the material was also saved in another Google product, that product has its own activity or content controls. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data held in other Google services. Review those services directly instead of assuming that a Gemini deletion command covers them.

5. Verify the account and administration context
Make sure you are viewing the same Google Account and Chrome profile used for the Gemini request. On work or school accounts, an administrator may control activity settings and retention. A managed account can hide options, lock them, or apply a retention period you cannot change or inspect. In that situation, the organization’s administrator is the appropriate source for the applicable policy.

What deletion does not cover
Provider-reviewed copies
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, says that chats already reviewed by service providers are not deleted when you delete account activity. Google says those copies may be retained for up to three years in a form that is not connected to your account. Deleting the visible activity entry therefore does not guarantee that a provider-reviewed copy disappears at the same time.
Short-term retention after Keep Activity is turned off
Turning off Keep Activity changes the treatment of future chats, but Google says those chats may still be retained for up to 72 hours. The stated reasons are service provision, feedback processing and safety. The 72-hour period is a published maximum for that handling, not a promise that every record is removed at exactly the same moment.
Data in other services
A Gemini request can involve a URL, page content, an uploaded file or audio. If a copy also exists in another Google service, deleting Gemini activity does not remove that separate copy. You must use that service’s own deletion controls.
Temporary page-content logging
Google says some page content is temporarily logged to the Google Account and does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Because it is not visible as an ordinary activity entry, an activity-list deletion cannot be treated as a complete accounting of every temporary log.

Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
- “I switched Gemini off, so the old data is gone.” The switch controls future use; it is not an erasure operation.
- “Deleting My Activity also deletes Chrome history.” Chrome’s browser history has its own deletion workflow.
- “The activity list is the complete record.” Google says page content can be temporarily logged without appearing in Gemini Apps Activity.
- “Keep Activity off means no retention at all.” Google states that future chats may remain for up to 72 hours for specified service and safety purposes.
- “Deleting a chat removes every copy.” Provider-reviewed copies may be retained for up to three years, and data in other Google services follows separate controls.
A practical privacy checklist
Use this sequence when you want the strongest cleanup available through user-facing controls:
- Disable Let Gemini browse for you or the equivalent Gemini in Chrome permission.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity and identify the relevant conversations, dates and shared material.
- Delete the entries you no longer want in the account activity view.
- Turn off Keep Activity if you do not want future chats saved in that activity list.
- Clear Chrome History for the same period if visited-page records should also be removed.
- Review any other Google service where the page, file, audio or URL may have been stored.
- For a work or school account, ask the administrator how organizational retention applies.
These steps separate prevention, account-activity deletion and browser-history deletion so that one setting is not mistaken for another.
What you can reasonably conclude after cleanup
After the Gemini in Chrome permission is off, new requests should no longer use that permission to browse for you, subject to the exact setting and product version shown in your Chrome profile. After you delete Gemini Apps Activity, the selected entries are removed through the account activity controls. After you clear Chrome History, the selected browser records are removed through Chrome’s history controls.
