Sometimes—but there is no universal percentage or number of hours you will gain. Turning off notifications can reduce battery use when alerts repeatedly wake the display or trigger sound and vibration. The result depends on the phone, the app, and how often alerts arrive.

Android’s own guidance warns that constant notifications can drain the battery, but Android’s power-management documentation also says notifications do not, by themselves, make a device leave Doze. Disabling every alert is therefore not a guaranteed battery fix. Start with promotional or nonessential app categories, then use your phone’s Battery settings to see whether those apps are actually consuming meaningful power.

What turning off notifications can—and cannot—save

A notification is more than the text you see. An incoming alert may cause the screen to light, play a sound, vibrate the phone, show an always-on display indicator, or prompt a short period of processing. Stopping unwanted alerts can remove some of that activity, especially if an app sends many messages throughout the day.

That does not mean every notification consumes a noticeable amount of energy. A phone can receive and process a message without turning on the screen, and Android’s idle power controls remain available. The practical effect is usually largest for alerts that are frequent and visually or physically disruptive: shopping promotions, social-media reactions, game events, marketing email, or repeated “ live” updates.

Android summarizes the general relationship in its battery guidance: “Constant notifications can drain your battery.” Its recommendation is to customize notifications so that you receive only essential alerts. The guidance does not provide a typical percentage, runtime gain, or test result, so no honest answer can promise that disabling notifications will add a specific number of hours.

For the official battery advice, see Android’s guide to saving battery life.

Notifications do not automatically defeat Doze

A common explanation says that every push notification wakes the entire phone and prevents it from sleeping. That is not how Android’s Doze mode is documented. The Android Open Source Project states: “Notifications don’t cause the device to exit from Doze.” When a device is idle and meets Doze conditions, Android can defer ordinary background work and network access even though notifications exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Doze does not make all notification handling free. A message can still involve network and CPU work when Android permits delivery, and an alert that lights the display or activates a vibration motor uses energy. The point is narrower: disabling notifications is not required merely to keep Doze working.

Doze also has exceptions for certain high-priority or time-sensitive work, and apps can receive limited processing time when messages are delivered. Those rules are part of Android’s power-management system, not evidence that every app keeps the phone fully awake. Read the AOSP Doze documentation for the platform behavior and its limits.

How Android delivers app notifications

Notifications are often delivered through Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). Android Developers explains that FCM can use a shared connection rather than requiring every app to maintain its own separate, persistent network connection. That design avoids a situation in which dozens of apps each keep an independent connection alive solely for push delivery.

When a message arrives during Doze or App Standby, Android can grant temporary network access and a partial wakelock so the app can handle it. The work is limited rather than a permanent wake state. A notification may then be posted, displayed silently, or delayed according to the message priority and the device’s power rules.

This is why two apps that send the same number of alerts can have different battery effects. One may post quiet, grouped updates; another may wake the screen, vibrate, run media processing, and perform additional background work. Turning off the notification permission stops the visible alert, but it does not automatically stop every background task, sync operation, or network request performed by the app.

The technical details are described in Android Developers’ Doze and App Standby guidance.

Which setting should you change?

Android gives you several levels of control. The best choice depends on whether you want to eliminate alert effects, reduce interruptions, or stop an app’s notifications entirely.

Choice What changes Battery trade-off When it makes sense
Turn off all notifications for an app The app can no longer post ordinary notifications. May remove screen, sound, and vibration activity from that app; background work can still continue. An app is nonessential, sends frequent promotions, or provides updates you never read.
Disable selected notification categories Only chosen channels—such as marketing, live events, or recommendations—are blocked where the phone exposes categories. Targets the noisy source while preserving important alerts. You need security, messaging, delivery, or calendar alerts but not every category.
Make alerts silent The notification remains in the shade, but sound and usually vibration are removed; exact behavior varies by device. Can reduce audio and vibration use without losing a visual record. You want to see updates when convenient rather than be interrupted.
Leave notifications on and use Battery Saver Android applies broader power restrictions; its battery guidance says notifications may be delayed. Can save more broadly, but with delayed alerts and other system trade-offs. You need temporary extra runtime and accept less timely delivery.

Do not treat “silent” as identical to “disabled.” A silent notification can still be delivered and stored in the notification shade. Conversely, disabling an app’s notifications does not prove that the app has stopped checking for new content.

  1. Open the app-notification controls. Go to Settings and open Notifications. Choose App notifications, See all, or the equivalent list of installed apps.
  2. Identify a high-volume app. Sort or review the list, then select an app that sends frequent unwanted alerts. If you are unsure, check Battery usage first and note which apps are active in the background.
  3. Choose a targeted control. Turn off the app’s notification permission if you do not need any of its alerts. If the app exposes notification categories or channels, disable only promotional, recommendation, live-event, or other nonessential categories.
  4. Use silent delivery when you still need a record. For a category you want to read later, select a silent behavior instead of blocking it, if your phone offers that option. Confirm whether vibration is also disabled; some manufacturers separate sound and vibration controls.
  5. Repeat selectively. Keep calls, direct messages, authentication codes, security warnings, medical reminders, alarms, and other time-sensitive alerts enabled unless you have another reliable way to receive them.
  6. Observe before changing more. Give the phone a normal day or charging cycle, then compare Battery usage with your previous pattern. Do not assume a change worked solely because the phone feels less interrupted.

Google’s step-by-step reference is Control notifications on Android. The page includes app-level controls and, on supported devices, category-level controls.

How to check whether notifications are relevant to your drain

Battery diagnostics cannot always separate the energy used to deliver a notification from the energy used by the app’s other work. They can still reveal whether the suspected app is a meaningful consumer.

  1. Open Settings and select Battery.
  2. Open Battery usage, Battery activity, or the equivalent screen. The label and chart differ by device.
  3. Review the apps with the highest share of use over a representative period, not just the last few minutes.
  4. Tap a suspected app to inspect foreground time, background activity, and any available restriction controls.
  5. Disable one notification category or app at a time, then compare a similar period with similar network coverage and usage.

A fair comparison requires similar conditions. A day spent watching video, using a weak cellular signal, navigating with GPS, or installing updates can overwhelm the small change caused by notifications. If an app remains a top battery consumer after its alerts are disabled, its background processing—not the notification display—is likely the larger issue.

When disabling notifications is most likely to help

Frequent alerts that wake the screen

Repeated screen wakeups are a clear, observable source of extra activity. If a service posts dozens of updates and your phone lights up for each one, blocking that category can remove those wakeups. The benefit will be smaller if your device keeps the display off and shows only a low-power indicator.

Sound and vibration on every message

Audio playback and vibration motors consume energy and can be especially noticeable when alerts arrive continuously. A silent category can reduce those effects while retaining the notification in the shade. Whether the reduction is measurable depends on alert frequency and the phone’s hardware.

Apps that perform work when an alert arrives

Some apps fetch images, update content, or run short processing tasks when handling a push message. Blocking their notifications may prevent that notification-triggered work, but it will not necessarily stop scheduled refreshes or other background behavior. Use Battery usage to verify the result.

When the battery difference may be negligible

Rare or already-silent alerts

If an app sends a few notifications per day, or its alerts are already silent with the screen off, removing them may have little practical effect. The phone still handles normal system activity, and other components may dominate consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apps with independent background activity

Disabling alerts does not disable an app’s sync schedule, location access, media playback, widgets, or data transfer initiated for reasons other than a notification. Restricting those behaviors is a separate decision with separate consequences.

Heavy use elsewhere

Display brightness, games, video, camera use, navigation, poor signal conditions, and hotspot operation can consume far more power than occasional alert effects. Notification changes cannot compensate for those loads.

Do not confuse notification controls with Battery Saver

Battery Saver is a system-wide mode, not a notification-permission switch. Android’s battery guidance says Battery Saver may delay notifications while applying broader restrictions to background behavior. That delayed delivery is a trade-off of Battery Saver itself.

If you turn off one app’s notifications, you are choosing not to receive that app’s alerts; other apps and system functions are not automatically put into Battery Saver rules. If you enable Battery Saver, some notifications may arrive later even though their permissions remain enabled. Decide which outcome you want before changing the setting.

Important alerts to protect

A blanket shutdown can create safety and account-access problems. Before disabling an app, consider whether it handles:

  • Two-factor authentication or sign-in approvals
  • Security warnings and suspicious-login notices
  • Calls, direct messages, and family or work communication
  • Medication, appointment, calendar, or transportation reminders
  • Delivery, banking, payment, or fraud alerts
  • Emergency, weather, or local safety notifications

If an app offers separate categories, keep these channels enabled and disable only marketing or low-priority updates. For an app without useful category controls, silent delivery may preserve access to the information without waking you for every event.

Common misconceptions and fixes

“Every notification prevents sleep.”

False. AOSP explicitly says notifications do not cause the device to exit Doze. A notification can still involve limited processing or an alert effect, but it is not proof that the phone has abandoned idle power management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Turning off notifications stops the app from using battery.”

Not necessarily. Notification permission controls posting alerts. Background sync, location, widgets, and other app activity can continue under their own rules. Check Battery usage before and after making the change.

“There must be a standard percentage saved.”

No substantiated universal percentage, hour estimate, or typical-user benchmark is established. Phone model, Android version, app behavior, alert volume, and screen settings all change the result.

“FCM means every app keeps its own connection.”

Android Developers describes FCM’s shared connection model, which avoids requiring separate persistent connections for each app solely to receive messages. The delivery system is therefore not equivalent to every app maintaining an always-on socket.

A practical decision rule

Start with the smallest change that addresses the problem. If one app is noisy, disable its promotional category. If you still need a record, make that category silent. If the app is irrelevant and high in Battery usage, disable all of its notifications and investigate its background activity separately. Keep alerts that protect security, health, safety, or time-sensitive communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the change, judge success by two measures: whether interruptions decreased and whether the app’s share of Battery usage changed under comparable conditions. If only interruptions improve, the setting was still useful—but it was not necessarily a major battery intervention. If battery use remains high, look for background location, sync, media, signal, or display causes rather than disabling more notifications at random.
