Sometimes, but there is no universal battery saving for every Android phone. The biggest potential drain is usually frequent, high-accuracy or background location work. Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning are separate from the Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth connection switches, so turning off a radio may not disable all location-related scanning. Check your phone’s battery use first, then disable the specific feature that is consuming power rather than switching off every wireless function by default.
What actually uses battery?
Android’s location system can combine GPS, nearby Wi‑Fi access points, cellular towers and motion sensors to estimate where the phone is. Google says this Location Accuracy service helps produce a faster, more precise position, especially indoors or near buildings where GPS is weak. Those calculations require the phone and apps to gather and process information, but the cost depends on how often they run.
Android Developers describe background location usage as capable of significantly affecting battery life. An app that repeatedly requests a high-accuracy position can activate GPS, Wi‑Fi or cellular inputs and sensors. A phone that merely has the Location switch enabled, but receives no frequent requests, may use far less power. The master switch alone therefore does not predict a fixed number of hours gained.

Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth have two different roles:
- Connection radio: lets the phone join Wi‑Fi networks or maintain Bluetooth connections to accessories.
- Scanning service: looks for nearby Wi‑Fi access points or Bluetooth devices. Android can use those observations for location estimation and nearby-device features, even when the corresponding connection is not active.
Because these controls are independent, “turning wireless off” is not one single battery setting.

How the four controls compare
| Control | What it changes | When battery impact is most plausible | What you may lose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device-wide Location | Stops or limits location access for the device and apps, subject to system exceptions. | When apps are requesting frequent or high-accuracy positions, particularly in the background. | Navigation, location-based automation, emergency or safety features and apps that need your position may stop working or become less precise. |
| App location permission or background access | Restricts individual apps to while-in-use, approximate or no location access. | When one app is responsible for repeated background requests. | The restricted app may lose live tracking, geofencing or automatic updates outside the periods you allow. |
| Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth scanning | Controls nearby-network or nearby-device discovery used by location and other services. | When scanning is frequent and nearby discovery is not needed. | Some location estimates, device discovery and automation based on nearby signals can be slower or unavailable. |
| Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth connection switch | Disconnects the phone from networks or accessories using that radio. | When an active connection is transferring data, maintaining a weak link or repeatedly searching for a device or network. | Internet access through Wi‑Fi, wireless audio, wearables, tethering or other connected functions. |
Android version, phone manufacturer, signal conditions, installed apps and hardware all affect the result. Official Android guidance does not establish a standard percentage or a guaranteed number of minutes for any of these switches.
Does turning off Location save battery?
It can, particularly if an app is obtaining high-accuracy or background locations. A navigation app, fitness tracker, delivery tracker or social app may request updates repeatedly; GPS and associated sensors then have more work to do. Blocking that access removes those requests and can reduce consumption.
Turning off Location also disables useful functions. Maps may not provide live positioning, a ride or delivery app may not update correctly, and location-based routines can fail. Some emergency, safety or theft-protection functions may depend on location. Instead of using the master switch as a first response, identify which app is requesting location and reduce its permission.
Reduce an individual app’s access
- Open Settings and go to Location, then App location permissions (the wording varies).
- Select an app with a high battery or location footprint.
- Choose Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, Approximate, or Don’t allow, according to the function you need.
- If the app offers a separate background or always-on option, disable it unless continuous tracking is essential.
Approximate location can preserve basic local features without giving an app a precise GPS position. A permission change is usually a better compromise than disabling Location for the entire phone.

Consider Location Accuracy separately
On devices with Google Play services, Location Accuracy combines wireless signals, GPS and sensor data. Disabling it can make positions slower or less precise, especially indoors, and it does not necessarily stop every location request. It is a trade-off between accuracy, availability and potential wireless and sensor activity, not a guaranteed battery mode.
Does leaving Bluetooth on drain battery?
Leaving Bluetooth enabled does not have a universal, measurable drain on every Android phone. The effect is more likely to matter when the phone is actively connected to accessories, transferring audio or data, maintaining a weak link, or repeatedly searching for devices. A phone with no active Bluetooth use may show little practical difference when Bluetooth remains on.
Android also exposes Bluetooth scanning as a separate location-related service. Turning off the Bluetooth connection switch does not automatically mean scanning is disabled on every device. Conversely, disabling scanning can affect nearby-device discovery while leaving an existing headset or watch connection untouched, depending on the Android version and manufacturer implementation.
Turn off the radio when you do not need a connection
- Open Settings > Connected devices (or Connections).
- Open Bluetooth and switch it off, or use the Quick Settings tile.
- Turn it back on when you need wireless audio, a wearable, a car system, file transfer or tethering.
Use this as a short-term measure when the battery is critically low or you know the phone is searching for an unavailable accessory. Do not expect a fixed percentage saving.

Turn off Bluetooth scanning when appropriate
On Android 12 and later, look under Settings > Location > Location services > Bluetooth scanning. Android 11 and earlier use a different path, commonly under Settings > Location > Scanning. The labels vary by manufacturer. Disabling the option can reduce nearby-device discovery and may affect location assistance. Android 12 and later also changed the permissions apps use for Bluetooth scanning, so an app may request a nearby-devices permission separately from location.
Does turning off Wi‑Fi save battery?
It may help when Wi‑Fi is carrying data, maintaining a connection at the edge of coverage, or searching repeatedly for networks. However, official Android guidance does not support the blanket claim that an idle Wi‑Fi radio always consumes substantial power or that switching it off always produces a noticeable gain. On some phones, Wi‑Fi can use less energy than mobile data for the same internet activity, so disabling it while continuing heavy cellular use could make total consumption worse.
Wi‑Fi scanning is separate from Wi‑Fi connectivity. Android can scan for nearby access points to improve location estimates or support system features while the phone is not connected to a Wi‑Fi network. Switching off the Wi‑Fi radio therefore may not disable the scanning setting.
Disconnect Wi‑Fi temporarily
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet (or the manufacturer’s equivalent).
- Tap the Wi‑Fi control to disconnect, or use the Quick Settings tile.
- Check whether mobile data is now carrying downloads, video or backups; those activities can offset any saving.
When you are trying to stretch a nearly empty battery, disconnecting from an unreliable network can be sensible. For normal use, leave Wi‑Fi on if you need the connection and investigate the app or network behavior instead.

Disable Wi‑Fi scanning separately
Go to Settings > Location > Location services > Wi‑Fi scanning on Android 12 and later. Older releases place the option under a different Scanning menu. With scanning disabled, nearby access points contribute less to location estimation and some automatic discovery features may change. Existing Wi‑Fi connectivity and this scanning preference are distinct.
How to find the real source of battery use
Before changing several settings at once, measure what the phone reports. Otherwise you cannot tell whether a toggle helped or whether a different app, weak signal or screen usage caused the change.
- Open Settings > Battery (sometimes Battery and device care > Battery).
- Open Battery usage or Since last full charge.
- Review apps and, where shown, system services. Look for an app with unusually high background use or a service that remains active when you are not using the phone.
- Tap the suspected app and inspect its background activity, location permission and unrestricted-battery setting.
- Change one setting, use the phone normally for a comparable period, and check the report again.
Menu names and reporting windows differ by Android build. A single percentage in the battery screen is not a controlled test: screen brightness, mobile reception, temperature, updates and usage can dominate the result.

A practical battery-saving sequence
1. Restrict unnecessary background location
Start with apps that do not need continuous tracking. Use while-in-use or approximate permission, and remove background access where the feature still works without it.

2. Stop unwanted scanning
If you never use nearby-device discovery or location assistance, review Wi‑Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning under Location services. Keep them enabled if you rely on automatic discovery, indoor location improvements or routines based on nearby devices.
3. Disconnect radios you are not using
Turn off Wi‑Fi when you are away from networks and Bluetooth when no accessory is connected, especially during a low-battery emergency. Remember that mobile data, GPS and screen activity may then increase instead.
4. Use Battery Saver for an urgent extension
Google’s Pixel guidance says Battery Saver turns off most location uses and lists turning off Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth among possible actions for stretching a low charge. That is Pixel-specific support guidance, not a promise that every Android implementation behaves identically. Battery Saver can also limit background activity and other functions, so check which notifications or synchronization tasks you still need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming one switch controls everything: Location, app permissions, scanning and radio connections are separate.
- Disabling Wi‑Fi while using more cellular data: streaming or large downloads over mobile data may consume more power.
- Ignoring a rogue app: repeated background location requests can matter more than an idle radio.
- Expecting an exact percentage: official guidance provides mechanisms and qualitative advice, not a universal test result.
- Applying old Android instructions to a new phone: scanning menus changed between Android 11 and Android 12, and manufacturers rename settings.
- Using legacy location-mode advice as current evidence: Android 9.0-and-earlier documentation about “Device only” says location can be slower and use more battery; that statement is not a measured result for current Android versions.
What to turn off first
If battery usage identifies a location-heavy app, restrict that app before disabling device-wide Location. If the phone is repeatedly searching for a missing headset or network, turn off the corresponding radio temporarily. If you do not need nearby discovery, disable Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning while leaving the connection features you use available. Only disable all location or wireless functions when the lost functionality is acceptable and you need every possible short-term reduction.
The reliable answer is conditional: turning off a feature can save battery when that feature is active or repeatedly scanning, but Android does not provide a universal saving figure for Location, Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi switches. Measure your own phone’s battery screen, change the narrowest control that addresses the cause, and keep the features that support navigation, connectivity and safety.
